Very Powerful Video Chris. I have only watched the first 10 minutes so far. It resonates well with me. Much Thanks. I'd like to share IMHO, a most important link to add to this thread and to this Avalon Community in regards to an Alkaline Diet and B17. Please give it a gander. On that note its time for my weekly Arm and Hammer Baking Soda Beverage. Its loaded with PH (Hence Alkalinity) .
B17: http://www.b17.com.au/
What is the PH Scale?
PH stands for "potential hydrogen" and simply put; is the measurement of how acid or alkaline a substance is, but as far as your body is concerned, it can mean your "picture of health." By understanding how pH levels of your body fluids affect your health, you will be able to learn just how healthy you really are.
The pH scale covers a range of 0-14, with 7.0 being neutral. Anything below 7.0 is more acid whilst anything above 7.0 is more alkali.
More Here: http://www.b17.com.au/index.php/your-ph-how-healthy-are-you
And with all my heart.....

This could well go under whistle blowing as these Doctors are really coming out and telling it as it is.
They could be struck off for claiming a cancer cure.
How many deaths are actually down to drugs prescribed by the medical profession?
How side effects are played down.
The pharmaceutical industry miss informs and is the main input in training Doctors.
There is much about this in the opening video--much more to it than just suggesting an alkali diet.
Please watch as much of the video as you have time to---share it with friends.
Its prevention and cure.
You could save a life.
If enough people get this, it could be the start of a major change in the way in which the medical profession treats patients.
People who know me, know I don't make such statements lightly.
Doctors are for sure well meaning and very accurate with diagnosis--they are not at fault.
They do not know that there are effective alternatives to that which is promote by the drug industry.

A Summarization on a pH body:
Summary pH is the measurement of the how acid or alkaline a substance is.
Alkaline = GOOD! Acid = BAD.
A pH of 7.2-7.5 is healthy.
Anything below 6.5 is very mineral deficient and sickly.
Calcium plays a vital role in maintaining balanced pH levels of our blood, saliva, extra cellular fluids (fluids outside of cells) and intra cellular fluids (the fluid inside cells) by acting as a buffer.
A healthy body has enough calcium to go around, so the blood will not need to draw it from other sources in the body like the bones and saliva.
A healthy pH means that there is less acid in the fluid, thus allowing more oxygen to be present.
Sickness, disease and cancer cannot occur in cells that are oxygen filled.
In summary it is quite amazing how efficiently our body can function if it only has the correct nutrients and minerals!

Thank you so much greybeard! The more people that question medicine the better1 I recently almost died, due to a hole in my duedenum. The surgeons were brilliant, this I know because i'm alive, but the post operative process almost killed me, due to levels of different antibiotics and antfungals and other drugs, painkillers etc. I got to the level where the child within was screamingi "They are killing us!" from then I refused to take any drugs, my love took me from the hospital, and I recovered quickly.
Again, people need to make up their own minds, they need this information to begin to understand what medicine is!

WhiteFeather i've often pondered about that whole baking soda thing & how me getting UTI's a lot & drinking baking soda water to get it out is actually a blessing in disguise lol. Cancer runs in my mom's side of the family, in dad's side it's benign tumors left & right. Granted I'm also not on a 'lazy redneck' diet like most the rest of my family (these people love fast food & microwaves.. i'm the black sheep of the family lol). I'm the first & only woman in my family (both sides) that has not had any sort of cancer or had to get a tumor (rather benign or not) removed.

It would not be easy for me to give an adequate overview
What I do with long videos is.
I down load to hard drive then watch a segment at a time.
There is more to it than just getting the acid /alkaline balance right, there can be a lack of potassium, magnesium and other essential minerals and vitamins.
One should be going to the toilet 3 to 5 times a day.
On the video it says less than that is constipated and in every case of diabetes and most other illness there is constipation.

Conditioning is such that I have to hear something quite a few times before I "get it"
Its not easy to seek help/advice out with the medical establishment when you have a serious illness.
While the video is long a lot of evidence is presented inorder that people take the advice seriously.
It good to hear from other black sheep.
Thankfully most of my family have got used to my ways and I have shared the video with most of them with positive reaction.
Its good to have evidence from Avalon members of their success with "self" cure.
Please keep that coming.

First, thank you Greybeard for the video, which I will watch today. Thank you again for your prayers!
Molly, D-Mannose is a lethal weapon against UTIs. Several women in my family were very prone to UTIs, but since taking D-Mannose regularly, the incidences have been reduced to ZERO.

The video covers why mineral supplements are in fact effective and also why we need them in that we cant get minerals from plants now, they have to get them from the soil and if soil is deplete then no minerals in food. Vitamins are still to be found in food.
The video also covers what happens to the body when an extreme diet is used---acidity and many dangerous side effects.
One day fast would be fine as far as I can see also colonic irrigation.
There is a lot in the video --if short of time start one hour in.

The Doctors could have given advice in a quarter of the time but obviously wanted to prove their case---
Basically--- green veggie-- mineral supplements-- baking powder--cider vinegar--filtered water.
Coral Minerals recommended and potassium good for bones and arthritis---complete cure possible.
Joint replacement does not work for most.
Reducing Ph essential---acidity major cause of disease--heart attacks lack of minerals and acidity.
Veins joints etc can become as new.
The body can repair anything given the right food/minerals.
Dairy and meat overall not a good idea.
Vegan would prob be best.
So there you go.

Does anyone have suggestions regarding quality/ cost effective options?
Hi Tonya,
I spent a good portion of my day (yesterday) researching various ionic mineral supplementation options/products that are available for purchase on the internet.
Comparing products is a time consuming process as there are so many variables to consider, i.e. price, quality, product contents/ingredients, fillers/binders used, where the minerals were sourced from, manufacturing standards used in production, reputation of manufacturer, product user reviews etc etc etc. And to make things even more difficult the range of these kinds of products that are currently available on the market is EXTENSIVE!
Anyway, after going through the motions with all of that I think I might have found a few products that meet MY expectations/requirements, but that is not to say they will also meet YOURS :).
I should probably also mention at this point that I have decided not to go for the 'coral' or 'phytonutrient' varieties of ionic minerals, instead opting for the fulvic/fulvonic variety - sourced from fossilized/prehistoric land-based plant matter.
Anyhow, here are some links to products that have found their way onto my "short list" (for now at least)...
Elixa Peak Being Fulvonic Mineral Concentrate, 2 fl oz (59 ml) - x350 Concentration (http://www.elixa.com/nutrient/fulvic.htm)
Vital Earth Minerals, Fulvic Mineral Complex, Ionic Mineral Dietary Supplement, 32 fl oz (946 ml) (http://www.iherb.com/Vital-Earth-Minerals-Fulvic-Mineral-Complex-Ionic-Mineral-Dietary-Supplement-32-fl-oz-946-ml/29330)
Eidon Mineral Supplements, Multiple Mineral, 18oz (533 ml) (http://Eidon Mineral Supplements, Multiple Mineral, 18oz (533 ml))
There are also a few other products that I'm still checking out, and I'm sure there are many good products that I haven't even found yet. So, I would welcome any suggestions/recommendations/information from other members who are also going through the process of conducting research into ionic mineral supplements.......
POST EDIT:
The reason I decided NOT to go for coral/phytonutrient-based ionic mineral supplements is due to my concerns about contamination (radiation, pollution, sewage etc). I figured the fulvic/fulvonic varieties might be a safer option, due to them being sourced from prehistoric shale deposits that are millions of years old (less likely to be contaminated by human-caused environmental impacts).

Okay, so after a great of research and careful consideration, I've decided I'm going to put myself on a basic alkaline-promoting diet and health protocol.
At this stage, the protocol I've come up with consists of the following:
1) Daily organic super-food and vegetable green (vitamin/mineral/antioxidant) supplementation using Paradise Herbs ORAC Energy Greens (http://www.iherb.com/Paradise-Herbs-ORAC-Energy-Greens-12-8-oz-364-g/10731).
2) Additional essential mineral supplementation using Elixa Fulvonic Ionic Mineral Concentrate (http://www.elixa.com/nutrient/fulvic.htm).
3) Drinking only purified alkaline water from Hexagon 8-Stage Water Purifier (http://www.enllivenherbalaustralia.com/products/hexagon_8stages/) (apparently produces purified, mineralised, alkaline, "living" water).
4. Combined with addition of (aluminium free) baking/bi-carb soda using McKenzie's Bi-carb Soda (http://www.mckenziesfoods.com.au/BiCarb) which I will take as necessary depending on body PH levels monitored using one of these basic saliva/urine PH test kits (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/80-PH-TEST-LITMUS-STRIPS-PAPER-ACID-ALKALINE-DIET-WATER-TESTING-KIT-URINE-SALIVA-/221320658428?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item3387bd3dfc).
5. Switching to a mostly fruit/vegetable based diet, trying to buy organic wherever possible as availability and budget allows.
I plan to kick things off about two weeks from now, once I have all the necessary products (etc) ready to go. Some of them I already have (like the water purifier and baking soda), some I need to purchase/order online which no doubt will take a week or so as they will have to be shipped from O/S.
Anyway, I figured why keep sitting on my backside thinking about it until I lose motivation, forget about this stuff, or move onto something else... best to strike while the iron is hot as they say! ;)
Oh, and the reason I provided specific links to the products I intend to use whilst undertaking this protocol, was so people here could check them out and potentially warn me of any issues they might be aware of that I didn't pick up on for some reaon.
So, if you do find anything suspicious about them or believe for some reason they are not good options/products to use, please let me know so I can look for more suitable alternatives. I do not intend to make any purchases for another 3 days (pay day for me), so if you know something I don't about all this stuff and think I might be making a mistake I would be most grateful if you could let me know asap.
With that said, I'm really excited to be embarking on this new health journey/adventure, which I believe has the potential to deliver significant, beneficial, life-changing results... wish me luck!

As someone with MS symptoms I am very interested in this video. However, due to my remote location and limited internet connection I cannot watch youtube videos...especially anything beyond a couple of minutes. From the comments it seems the video is about making the body more alkaline. This is something I have been focused on for a while, and while I believe it is very beneficial I would not say it has cured my condition. My sister has Crohns and also focused on creating an alkaline state in her body, and though of course this is beneficial to her health it has not cured her condition.
So I am assuming that there is a lot more in this video than creating an alkaline body state and I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could let me (and anyone else technologically challenged) know they key elements presented here.
Thank You

Hi enfoldedblue
There are various suggestions.
Yes acid Ph is the problem.
The body needs a certain voltage to work efficiently---acidity lowers that--alkaline enhances that.
Ionised water preferable.
Sea salt in normal amounts on food.
Raw food diet good.
Vegan a good idea--animal protein can be unhelpful to say the least. (including chicken)
Testing with Ph level with strips essential to know here you are acid/alkaline balance.
There are books on the subject.
Minerals essential, post 25 very helpful.
The blood, bones, muscles are starved of oxygen through acidity.
You cant loose weight if you acidic.

They could have produced a much shorter video.
I suppose they felt they had to prove their point and I think they did.
Some people have latent within their body a disease.
So its a question of minimising certain triggers, one of which is acidity.
The X rays of before and after of cell phone use are also a wake up call.
I watched another video where plants placed near a home based router died.
People just do not want to acknowledge information like this--an inconvenient truth.

Basically im reasonably healthy but ignored "minor" warnings like leg cramps, cold hands at times and veracious veins.
Just put it down to my age---that's a big mistake.

Vital Functions of Salt in the Body
1. Salt is most effective in stabilizing irregular heartbeats and, Contrary to the misconception that it causes high blood pressure, it is actually essential for the regulation of blood pressure - in conjunction with water. Naturally the proportions are critical.
2. Salt is vital to the extraction of excess acidity from the cells in the body, particularly the brain cells.
3. Salt is vital for balancing the sugar levels in the blood; a needed element in diabetics.
4. Salt is vital for the generation of hydroelectric energy in cells in the body. It is used for local power generation at the sites of energy need by the cells.
5. Salt is vital to the nerve cells' communication and information processing all the time that the brain cells work, from the moment of conception to death.
6. Salt is vital for absorption of food particles through the intestinal tract.
7. Salt is vital for the clearance of the lungs of mucus plugs and sticky phlegm, particularly in asthma and cystic fibrosis.
8. Salt is vital for clearing up catarrh and congestion of the sinuses.
9. Salt is a strong natural antihistamine.
10. Salt is essential for the prevention of muscle cramps.
11. Salt is vital to prevent excess saliva production to the point that it flows out of the mouth during sleep. Needing to constantly mop up excess saliva indicates salt shortage.
12. Salt is absolutely vital to making the structure of bones firm. Osteoporosis, in a major way, is a result of salt and water shortage in the body.
13. Salt is vital for sleep regulation. It is a natural hypnotic.
14. Salt is a vitally needed element in the treatment of diabetics.
15. Salt on the tongue will stop persistent dry coughs.
16. Salt is vital for the prevention of gout and gouty arthritis.
17. Salt is vital for maintaining sexuality and libido.
18. Salt is vital for preventing varicose veins and spider veins on the legs and thighs.
19. Salt is vital to the communication and information processing nerve cells the entire time that the brain cells work - from the moment of conception to death.
20. Salt is vital for reducing a double chin. When the body is short of salt, it means the body really is short of water. The salivary glands sense the salt shortage and are obliged to produce more saliva to lubricate the act of chewing and swallowing and also to supply the stomach with water that it needs for breaking down foods. Circulation to the salivary glands increases and the blood vessels become "leaky" in order to supply the glands with water to manufacture saliva. The "leakiness" spills beyond the area of the glands themselves, causing increased bulk under the skin of the chin, the cheeks and into the neck.
21. Sea salt contains about 80 mineral elements that the body needs. Some of these elements are needed in trace amounts. Unrefined sea salt is a better choice of salt than other types of salt on the market. Ordinary table salt that is bought in the super markets has been stripped of its companion elements and contains additive elements such as aluminum silicate to keep it powdery and porous. Aluminum is a very toxic element in our nervous system. It is implicated as one of the primary causes of Alzheimer's disease.
22. Twenty-seven percent of the body's salt is in the bones. Osteoporosis results when the body needs more salt and takes it from the body. Bones are twenty-two percent water. Is it not obvious what happens to the bones when we're deficient in salt or water or both.
* The information on salt intake is taken from Dr. Batmanghelidj's book, "Water: Rx for a Healthier Pain-Free Life".
The Op video also states the value of sea salt, water and minerals.

I came across this thread seeking alternative information and advice, and boy did this forum deliver. I’ve spent the last four days hospitalized after checking myself in due to intense pain in my kidneys, and was diagnosed with advanced kidney disease. The OP video and the subsequent information presented has blown me away. Here I thought I was living a decently healthy life, when all along I was severely poisoning myself.
Doctors say I’m a few months shy of requiring dialysis, and subsequently a kidney transplant. It wasn’t helpful that my wife was in the room when the diagnosis was made, because it naturally frightened her, but with what I’ve read on this thread and other pertaining articles online, I’ve made some purchases online, and can honestly say I’m very optimistic about my future and staying ahead of dialysis. I will come back six months from now to enlighten everyone on my personal journey, and the efficacy of proper pH balance in my body. :dancing:

I would point out that Dr Robert O Young has been discredited and jailed.
False claims etc.
He has written several books on the subject and is in the opening post video.
However there is a lot of evidence that Bi-carbonate of soda is effective and some that it isnt.

DMSO is a great way to get other desired medications and nutrients into the body, and to get many sorts of undesired toxins out of the body.
If one's kidneys are hurting, this may be because the kidneys (the body's main filter of toxins in the blood) are being overworked, by some source of toxins elsewhere in the body, such as an infection or tumor. For me for example, when I have infected teeth roots, even if I don't notice, my kidney on that same side will start to ache a little.
I am currently using a solution of chlorine dioxide and DMSO (with a little xylitol for taste), swished around in my mouth for ten minutes, to temporarily treat just such an infection while I find a dentist that I can work with (I'm getting fussy in my old age) to extract the tooth.
I would however hesitate to take DMSO (swallow it) just for kidney pain, without first having an idea why my kidneys were upset. The DMSO might increase the burden on the kidneys by being able to bind to more of whatever was the toxin that I had too much of, which could increase the workload on my kidneys.
In short ... I would figure out why my kidneys are upset with me ... why are they complaining that they are over worked and under paid?
I would identify and fix the primary cause, not just the symptom - the kidney pain in this case.

Anecdotal chime-in for this.
A few years back, I looked at "alkalizing diet" on a personal basis, mostly for superficial stuff. It worked, and I quit paying much attention to it, but still do not have dry, splitting cuticles.
Well my friend had horrible auto-immune problems and has struggled with everything else in the world for all kinds of "mystery ailments" such as:
indigestion/acid reflux
monthly colds from weakened immunity
hidradenitis suppurativa
daily puking for over a year
It is gone in two weeks because she started eating lemons.
The "food constituents" do not matter, what matters is how the body processes it, and citrus is "the" pre-eminent alkalizer.
Nothing in "Medicine" affects this stuff, I have seen such bad feedback coming from doctors that I think they should be buried. The things they were "about to treat" were diabetes and STDs, and maybe a few more, and prescribing drugs that I do not even know the name of.
Also, sensible alternative cures such as pro-biotics did nothing on their own, I suppose due to a too strongly-acidic environment, they don't work.
It looks to me like the priority goes:
1. Alkalize--citrus crash diet if you want fast action
2. Pro-biotics and trace mineral supplements, etc.
It may not be the 100% answer for everybody, but, since many are likely to have similar problems, it is something easy and fast to try. It looks like the typical American diet is not containing much more citrus than it does sauerkraut. Another "old fashioned" thing that has been updated nearly out of existence.

Quite a few Drs on this very important video.
Its long but well worth the time spent watching.
Its a medically proven--breakthrough, but certainly would not be appreciated by drug producers.
To reach as many people as possible, it would have taken a translation into several languages. There is no French translation, I'm sorry I couldn't watch. I understand, that vitamin and mineral supplementation could be life saving in curing illnesses. In France, 40 years ago trace elements were covered by social security, my doctor prescribed me lithium and magnesium in the form of ampoules, today this product is over the counter and is no longer reimbursed. Moreover, fewer and fewer drugs are under reimbursement and replaced by generic drugs. This is what should alert us. What is the point of paying a mutual and not being able to make the choice in field treatment to improve your general condition.
Hippocrates the father of medicine would have said: that your first medicine was your food then should you make the conscious choice of the right food.

Just One Serving May Slash This Form of Diabetes Risk in Half

"STORY AT-A-GLANCE
According to recent research, adults with high glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65) antibody levels (a marker for Type 1 diabetes) and low omega-3 levels had a more than fourfold higher risk of autoimmune diabetes
In earlier research, GAD65-positive individuals who ate one or more servings of fatty fish per week had a 49% reduced risk of latent autoimmune diabetes compared to those who got less than one weekly serving
Only fatty, cold-water fish contain significant amounts of omega-3 fats. Examples include wild-caught Alaskan salmon, sardines, anchovies, mackerel and herring. Farmed salmon is among the most toxic foods available and is best avoided
Farmed salmon also have the nutritional drawbacks of containing only half the omega-3 of wild salmon and four to eight times less vitamin D, while having more than 5.5 times the amount of harmful omega-6
Processed vegetable oils are primary source of omega-6 linoleic acid (LA), but animal foods such as farmed salmon also contain high amounts of it, thanks to the fact that the animals are fed LA-rich grains. There’s evidence to suggest excessive amounts of LA play a role in most chronic diseases, especially top killers such as heart disease
Omega-3 fats are important for many reasons. While their brain and cardiovascular benefits are well-established, a lesser known benefit has to do with autoimmune diabetes.
According to research1,2 published in December 2020, adults who test positive for glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65) antibodies — a marker for Type 1 diabetes3 — can significantly reduce their risk of adult-onset diabetes by eating omega-3 rich fatty fish.
The study looked at data from 11,247 cases of adult-onset diabetes and 14,288 diabetes-free controls that participated in the Epic-InterAct case-cohort study conducted in eight European countries. As explained by the authors:4
“Baseline plasma samples were analyzed for GAD65 antibodies and phospholipid n-3 PUFAs. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for incident diabetes in relation to GAD65 antibody status and tertiles of plasma phospholipid n-3 PUFA or fish intake were estimated using Prentice-weighted Cox regression …
The hazard of diabetes in antibody-positive individuals with low intake of total and fatty fish, respectively, was significantly elevated (HR 2.52 and 2.48) compared with people who were GAD65 antibody negative and had high fish intake, with evidence of additive (AP 0.44 and 0.48) and multiplicative interactions.
Individuals with high GAD65 antibody levels (≥167.5 units/mL) and low total plasma phospholipid n-3 PUFAs had a more than fourfold higher hazard of diabetes …”
Results Support Previous Findings
Some of the researchers from this team first investigated the impact of fish consumption on latent autoimmune diabetes back in 2014.5 At that time, they analyzed data from a much smaller cohort that included 89 cases of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, 462 Type 2 diabetics and 1,007 diabetes-free controls. A food frequency questionnaire was used to determine fish intake along with omega-3 supplementation and vitamin D intake.
Those who ate one or more servings of fatty fish per week had a 49% reduced risk of latent autoimmune diabetes compared to those who got less than one weekly serving.
Results showed those who ate one or more servings of fatty fish per week had a 49% reduced risk of latent autoimmune diabetes, but not Type 2 diabetes, compared to those who got less than one weekly serving. Similar associations were seen among those who took omega-3 supplements.
The Type of Fish You Choose Matters
While this is good news, it’s important to be careful about your seafood choices. Importantly, not all fish contain omega-3s. Only fatty, cold-water fish do. Examples include wild-caught Alaskan salmon, sardines, anchovies, mackerel and herring.
Farmed fish, especially farmed salmon, is best avoided altogether due to the exaggerated potential for contamination. At first glance, farmed fish may seem like a good idea to help protect wild seafood populations from overfishing, but in reality, the industry is plagued with many of the same problems surrounding land-based concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), including pollution, disease, toxicity and inferior nutritional quality.
Most farmed fish are fed genetically engineered (GE) corn and soy, which are a completely unnatural diet for marine life and are loaded with hazardous omega-6 fats. Others are fed fishmeal, which is known to accumulate industrial chemicals like PCBs and dioxins.
Remember a few important facts: The first is that the omega-6 fats that are fed to these fish are about 90% of the dangerous linoleic acid (LA) that I have recently written about. So, consuming these fish will not correct a high omega 6-to-3 ratio. Additionally, the primary action needed if your ratio is too high is to first lower your LA intake, as I review in detail in my recent article on LA.
According to toxicology researcher Jerome Ruzzin, farmed salmon is one of the most toxic foods on the market — five times more toxic than any other food product tested. Farmed fish waste also promotes algal growth that harms the water’s oxygen content, posing risks to coral reefs and other aquatic life.
From a nutritional perspective, farmed salmon have the drawbacks of containing only half the omega-3 of wild salmon6,7,8 and one-fourth the vitamin D,9 while having more than 5.5 times the amount of omega-6.10,11 Farmed salmon are also routinely exposed to antibiotics and pesticides.
Alaska does not permit aquaculture, so all Alaskan fish are wild caught. They also have some of the cleanest water and some of the best maintained and most sustainable fisheries.
To verify authenticity, look for the state of Alaska’s “Wild Alaska Pure” logo. This is one of the more reliable ones, and it’s a particularly good sign to look for if you’re buying canned Alaskan salmon, which is less expensive than salmon steaks.
In the past, sockeye salmon was another good choice as they weren’t farmed. Unfortunately, this has changed. Land-based sockeye salmon farming is now being done,12 which makes it difficult to know whether the fish is wild or not. For this reason, it may be best to avoid it unless you can verify that it’s wild-caught.

Your Omega-3 Index Is an Excellent Predictor of Mortality
Aside from affecting your risk of autoimmune diabetes, omega-3 fats also play other important roles in health. For example, research13 published in 2018 confirmed omega-3 fats can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease and all-cause mortality.
Overall, those with an omega-3 index in the highest quintile had a total mortality that was 34% lower than those in the lowest omega-3 quintile, and a 39% lower risk for CVD. The strongest association was found for the omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). According to the authors, “The omega-3 index can serve as a marker of overall health in older Americans.”
As detailed in “More Data Support Heart Healthy Benefits of Omega-3s,” more recent research found fish oil consumption lowered the risk of all-cause mortality by 13% and cardiovascular mortality by 16%.
DHA for Your Brain Health
DHA is also crucial for brain health. In my book, “Superfuel,” cowritten with James DiNicolantonio, Pharm.D., we explain how DHA is an essential structural component of your brain, and is found in high levels in your neurons, the cells of your central nervous system.
When your omega-3 intake is inadequate, your nerve cells become stiff and more prone to inflammation as the missing omega-3 fats are substituted with omega-6 instead.
Once your nerve cells become rigid and inflamed, proper neurotransmission from cell to cell and within cells become compromised. Low DHA levels have been linked to memory loss and Alzheimer's disease, and some studies suggest degenerative brain diseases may potentially be reversible with sufficient DHA.14,15
DHA also stimulates the Nrf2 pathway, one of the most important transcription factors that regulates cellular oxidation and reduction, and aids in detoxification.16 Additionally, DHA increases heme oxygenase 117 (a protein produced in response to oxidative stress) and upregulates antioxidant enzymes — all of which are important for brain health.
The omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), meanwhile, appears to be particularly beneficial in the treatment of depression,18 as it helps lower levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin 1 beta and prostaglandin E2 — three immune chemicals that tend to be elevated in those with depression.
The Many Health Benefits of Omega-3 Fats
Other health benefits of omega-3 fats include the following:
Reducing inflammation — This in turn can be helpful for those suffering with rheumatoid arthritis by reducing stiffness and pain.19 Women who suffer from menstrual pain may also experience milder pain.20,21
Optimizing muscle building and bone strength — Omega-3 fats help your body build healthy muscle mass, including people suffering from cancer who may experience cachexia.22 Omega-3 fats can also help improve your bone strength by improving the utilization of calcium in your body. This may lead to a reduction in the development of osteoporosis.23
Improving metabolic syndrome24 and insulin resistance.25
Improving mental health and behavior — Demonstrated benefits have been shown for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), including reduced aggression, hyperactivity,26 impulsivity,27 oppositional behavior28 and restlessness.29 Omega-3 is associated with lowered risk for other neurological/cognitive dysfunction as well, including: memory loss, brain aging, learning disorders and ADHD,30 autism and dyslexia.31
Protecting your vision — DHA is a major structural element in your eye and brain.32 Low levels of DHA may increase your risk for age related macular degeneration.33
Reducing your risk of kidney disease34 and colon cancer.35
The Importance of Phospholipid-Bound Omega-3
While fish oil is a well-known source of omega-3 fats, it has several drawbacks, the lack of phospholipids being one of them. DHA and EPA are water insoluble and therefore cannot be transported in their free form in your blood. They must be packaged into lipoprotein vehicles such as phospholipids. This is primarily why the bioavailability of krill oil is so much higher than fish oil, because in fish oil, the DHA and EPA are bound to triglycerides.
When you take fish oil, your liver has to attach it to phosphatidylcholine in order for it to be efficiently utilized. Phospholipids are also one of the principal compounds in high-density lipoproteins (HDL), which you want more of, and by allowing your cells to maintain structural integrity, phospholipids help your cells function optimally.
Importantly, your brain cannot readily absorb DHA unless it’s bound to phosphatidylcholine, and while krill oil contains phosphatidylcholine naturally, fish oil does not. As the name implies, phosphatidylcholine is composed partly of choline, the precursor for the vital neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which sends nerve signals to your brain, and choline itself is crucial for brain development, learning and memory.
Research36 by Rhonda Patrick, Ph.D., has highlighted the value of DHA bound to phospholipids, showing this form may actually reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in those with the apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) gene, which lowers the typical age of onset of this degenerative brain disorder.
Two hallmarks of Alzheimer’s are amyloid beta plaques and tau tangles, both of which impair normal brain functioning. Alzheimer’s patients also have reduced glucose transport into their brains, and this is one of the reasons why plaque and tangles form and accumulate in the first place. According to Patrick,37 DHA encourages your brain’s uptake of glucose by regulating the structure and function of glucose transporters, proteins located at your blood-brain barrier.
While eating DHA-rich fish has been shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s in APOE4 carriers, taking fish oil has not demonstrated the same efficacy. According to Patrick, this variation in response appears to be related to the different ways in which the two forms of DHA are metabolized and ultimately transported into your brain.
When the triglyceride form of DHA is metabolized, most of it turns into nonesterified DHA, while the phospholipid form is metabolized primarily into DHA-lysophosphatidylcholine (DHA-lysoPC). While both of these forms can cross the blood-brain barrier to reach your brain, the phospholipid form does so far more efficiently.
According to Patrick, people with APOE4 have a faulty nonesterified DHA transport system, and this may be why they’re at increased risk for Alzheimer’s. The good news is that DHA-lysoPC can bypass the tight junctions, thereby improving DHA transport, and for those with one or two APOE4 variants, taking the phospholipid form of DHA may therefore lower their risk of Alzheimer’s more effectively.
Oxidized Linoleic Acid Drives Many Disease Processes
One of the most hazardous fats in the human diet, in my view, is omega-6 linoleic acid (LA). Processed vegetable oils are primary sources of LA, but animal foods such as chicken and farmed salmon also contain high amounts of it, thanks to the fact that the animals are fed LA-rich grains.
There’s evidence to suggest excessive amounts of LA play a role in most chronic diseases, especially top killers such as heart disease. Evidence implicating excessive consumption of LA as a direct cause of heart disease includes, but is not limited to, the following:38
The amount of LA in adipose tissue and platelets is positively associated with coronary artery disease, and studies39 measuring changes in LA concentrations in adipose tissue in Americans show concentrations increased from 9.1% in 1959 to 21.5% in 2008. This increase also paralleled increases in the prevalence of obesity, diabetes and asthma.
Conversely, the long-chained omega-3s DHA and EPA have been shown to protect against coronary artery disease, which is why maintaining a healthy balance between omega-3 and omega-6 is so important.
Patients with atherosclerosis have higher amounts of LA oxidation products in their plasma, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and atherosclerotic plaques.
Oxidation of LA begins before any clinical signs of atherosclerosis become apparent.
When the endothelium (the interior lining of your blood vessels) is exposed to LA, LDL transfer across the endothelium is increased and this is an essential step in the atherosclerotic process.
Low LA diets reduce LDL oxidation.
A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials in humans showed that when saturated fat and trans fat are replaced with omega-6 PUFAs, all-cause mortality, ischemic heart disease mortality and cardiovascular mortality increase.
Oxidation products of LA are found in infarcted tissue.
The LA metabolite 9-HODE is a strong promoter of inflammation, and may be both a marker for and inducer of atherosclerosis.
Do You Know Your Omega-3 Index?
An omega-3 deficiency leaves you vulnerable to several chronic diseases and lifelong challenges. Optimizing your levels is truly a foundational strategy to attaining and maintaining good health. The best way to determine if you're eating enough food with omega-3 is to get an omega-3 index test.
The omega-3 index is a measure of the amount of EPA and DHA in the membranes of your red blood cells (RBCs). Your index is expressed as a percent of your total RBC fatty acids. The omega-3 index has been validated as a stable, long-term marker of your omega-3 status.
An omega-3 index over 8% is associated with the lowest risk of death from heart disease, while an index below 4% places you at the highest risk of heart disease-related mortality.
I firmly believe an omega-3 index test is one of the most important annual health screens that everyone needs. GrassrootsHealth makes testing easy through its D*Action+Omega-3 consumer-sponsored research project.40 You can find the GrassrootsHealth omega-3 index test kit both in my online store and on the GrassrootsHealth website.41
Please remember: If you find that you have a high omega 6-to-3 ratio, your primary action needed is to first lower your LA intake, as I review in detail in my recent article on LA."
