View Full Version : Corporate Control of the Food Supply

I always thought that the Europeans were miles (kilometres?) ahead of us in North America when it came to sensible farming practices. With this news, I'm afraid they're just as susceptible to corporate pressure as the rest of the world.
Did you know that the EU is preparing legislation that will make it illegal to grow crops that are not on a list of approved seeds? The "approved" list is currently 60% dominated by big corporations like Monsanto, AstraZenecar and others. The approved "professional" list basically consists of only hybrids - which means that you cannot take next year's seed from this season's crop.
Furthermore, it will not only be forbidden to sell other seeds than those already mentioned, but it will also be illegal to grow them. "File sharing" in the area of seeds will become a criminal act. This means that corporations will be even more able to influence what you eat, when you will not even be able to decide what to grow.
It also means that the varieties that are historically interesting will disappear, even varieties that can withstand our climate.
If you would like to sign a petition to protest agianst this impending law, here's the link to the Avaaz petition site:

I used to have to drive past Nitro, WV on the way to Charleston, WV. On the way to 130th AW.
Monsanto poisoned the whole town of Nitro when they manufactured Agent Orange on site during two separate periods.
Now a company called Freedom Industries has tainted the Charleston area water supply with a faulty chemical storage tank having leaked a great deal of coal scrubbing agent (a kind of rocket-fuel/alcohol mixture!!) into the water supply of 9 counties.
These corporations should not be permitted to dictate what the people can and cannot do.
It would be a simple matter to rectify these situations -- turn the military against the corporations who act against the people...

Signed it.Thanks for sharing this. It is such an obvious way of showing us they do not wish normal people to be in control of our lives. I grow fruit and veggies, not enough to support my family, but enough to compliment our diets and ensure we get some proper organic and nutrient rich food. This rule is offensive and such a suppression of our natural basic needs.

Not just our basic needs but our basic rights. Who could imagine a backyard vegetable plot being a criminal enterprise? The real criminals are the ones poisoning our air, food and water. They have the hubris to deny us our own homegrown healthy food? I hope people have the stones to fight back!

Isn't it strange that there is a vegetable garden on the lawn of the White House, but it's illegal to have a vegetable garden in the front yards of lots of cities? They won't allow legislation that makes it mandatory that the print on food labels whether or not a product contains GMO, but they are thinking about legislating what kinds of seeds we can grow? It's the kind of insanity that convinces people that there is no need to follow the laws because they are unrelated to the way people live. Once the official government forces enough of the population into a "counter culture," the counter culture becomes the culture.

I would go to prison for this principle let them try to enforce this and they will fail.

Exactly right. And insanity is the correct word, because the system they are trying to set up is unsustainable and will result in staggering amounts of anguish and misery. The people at the top of the heap are parasites, doing what parasites always do: committing suicide by killing the host.

Signed.
Good seed supplier (http://www.realseeds.co.uk/) with lots of seed saving information. All of the seeds supplied by this grower are saveable.

The owner of 'realseeds' Ben studied genetic engineering at the Department of Plant Sciences in Cambridge.
GM crops pose a huge risk to the food chain.
GM foods have not been safety-tested, and should be resisted at all costs.
note : Ben studied genetic engineering at the Department of Plant Sciences in Cambridge.
The security of the worlds food supply is at stake here,
at risk to the same sort of short-term, ignorant, greedy fools who wrecked the banking system.
Read here (http://www.realseeds.co.uk/GMOseed_is_a_scam.html) what he has to say about them, and how they reduce yield and are not the answer.

Hi Fellow Aspirant.
In principle (and in practice, as I grow and share food) I am totally against such an idea. However, I looked at the link you provided intending to sign the petition. This link exists since March, 2013. I notice that there is no link on the petition page to the proposed legislation. This is interesting. It means that people may be offended enough by the concept to sign up without reviewing the potentially offending legsligation. I then tried to find the proposed legsligation on the EU website. I can't find it. Maybe others with more ability will be able to find it. If someone can find it please let us have a link so we all can review it. Personally, I am reluctant to sign up until I know what I am signing up for... (I did find lots of proposed legsligation about the marketing of seeds, but nothing about the limiting, or preventing of smallholders from using propgating seeds.) It will be up to seed-savers to continue providing their ever increasingy necessary service to the planet.
In addition, I strongly urge people to follow Becky's example;

It is easy for everyone to grow some of their own food. From window aquaponics in apartments, to veggie plots in backyards. Research it and start doing. There is no excuse for people not to be doing this, except lack of motivation. I mention this because an apatethic state is the result of consuming toxic processed foods... Wake up people, grow and share own food and eat your way to health...
Healthy, toxin free food and water is the primary step to keeping your mind, body and spirit in healthy condition.
Even keeping chickens for meat and eggs is very easy. Did you know that the most sought after component of Ratfish Oil, vitiman K2 (ala Pete Petersen) is in the eggs of grass fed free range chickens? ;)

LOL AT the thomas Sheridan video. He looks like he's half into the grave to me, could use some local organic veggies it would seem to me. Ironic how his sort of fat, gray and sullen face is going on about food. Anyone taking health advice from a young man who looks like that may want to reconsider. Besides, when properly inclined and informed, there's a vast plethora of healthy foods available even to someone like me who is under the poverty income level.

More insanity - according to this article (http://www.activistpost.com/2014/01/eu-to-ban-heirloom-seeds-and.html), the EU is about to criminalize heirloom seeds and license gardens.
The “Plant Reproductive Material Law” regulates all plants. It contains restrictions on vegetables and woodland trees, as well as all other plants of any species. It will be illegal to grow, reproduce, or trade any vegetable seed or tree that has not been been tested and approved by the government, more specifically the “EU Plant Variety Agency.” [...] The new law basically puts the government in charge of all plants and seeds in Europe, and prevents home gardeners from growing their own plants from non-regulated seeds. If they did, they would now be considered criminals.
It's hard for me to believe it could come to this. Well it hasn't yet, but we're getting close. I don't know about anyone else, but they can have my hoe when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.
