This article caught my eye this morning as I was doing my daily trawl of Digg for something not submitted by college students. Unfortunately it was a "top 10 list", but at least the content focused on disclosure.
The article says that "many within the UFO community are wondering if we may be on the eve of the government revealing first contact with an alien civilization." It goes on to outlay 8 scenarios of how a first contact would impact society. I counted 5 negatively-focused scenarios, 2 more positive ones (but still cynical at the end), and 1 neutral (I hadn't considered this scenario. It made for a good laugh.)

My intellect says these are the two most likely
The “Meh” Hypothesis
Humanity looks up for a second, says “Hmmm… Aliens”, and collectively goes about their business not really caring too much about the whole thing, and looking at the aliens as just another “other” that doesn’t affect their daily lives as such. To me, this is the most likely scenario. Sure, the aliens will be a big deal, especially if they’re benevolent and share their technology with us, but will this be enough of a distraction for most of us to look past the piles of bills on our desks, the fact that the kids need haircuts and new shoes, or that the alternator on the minivan just broke down? Not real likely.
The “Contact” Hypothesis
First contact seems like it goes off without a hitch, but some damn nutjob with a bomb screws it all up for the rest of us. Another very likely scenario. Let’s face it, the first question many devout followers of every faith will have for the aliens will be “do you believe in god?”. What if the answer is “no”? We already happily kill each other over such a statement…
But ...
I do feel in my heart that the true possible result is...
The Roddenberry Hypothesis
First contact will unite us as a species for the first time in human history. Wars will end, poverty will be eliminated, and we will take our rightful place in a galactic community. Sounds nice, Doesn’t it?
We are Love. Do not let others convince you of anything else. No one elses agenda can or will stop us from being the beings that we are.

What I think is most possible, is twist on "Rodenberry idea".. alien contact used as excuse for one world military-led unification, to fight common enemy.
Empire of Man
(those familiar with Warhammer 40K (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhammer_40k#Background) know the idea)
Something akin to what was presented in original "Watchmen" graphic novel, and was curiously deleted from movie.

In my opinion, the Hawking hypotesis has already happened...

I'd say probably the "Meh" or "Hawkings" ideas.
Something akin to what was presented in original "Watchmen" graphic novel, and was curiously deleted from movie.
Which is funny because one of the justifications for changing it was that movie audiences wouldn't find it believable.
"New York was just randomly blown up by an alien that looks like a giant squid!"
"New York was just blown up by Dr. Manhattan, a godlike being with super-powers, who we all saw freak out on national television a week ago!"
That and Zack Synder thought it was too "Silver Agey".
