I've been researching a lot about lucid dreaming /astral travel recently and my 13 year old nephew is experimenting with different techniques too. Today we discovered a herb called selene capensis, also known as African dream root which supposedly helps to induce lucid dreaming.

So, I'd like to know if anyone has tried it and what your experience was?

Also, what is your view on giving shamanic herbs to a 13 year old (I know it depends on the kid and their maturity) ... obviously I wouldn't give it to him if I didn't think he could handle it, but I'm interested in hearing your views and if you have / would give it to a teenager? :)

My friend says Ashwaghanda extract induces vivid and lucid dreams in him, and I have others say they can't take it before sleep because the dreams become too vivid and intense for them. I take it, but haven't really noticed the same - although I take mine in the morning (its a general and quite powerful adaptogen - good for many aspects of balancing and rejuvenation). Ashwagandha would be safe for a 13 year old.

Unfortunately I know nothing about Selene Capesis, so have nothing to offer you on that front. I was able to induce lucid dreaming by maturing my spirituality - it sort of came with the territory, and by that I mean the practice of maintaining consistently loving, and thought free mindset, and tried to practically apply that to all my external circumstance. Spirituality is a lot of work, actually - to do it properly anyway ;)

You can also get devices that will flash a light in your eye when you are sleeping - not enough to waken you, but hopefully enough to trigger the memory that this light means you are lucid dreaming. Supposedly, they work.

Good luck on you adventures!

IndigoStar, please don’t experiment on a thirteen year old.

Please don’t give a powerful and unknown substance to anyone, especially not to someone young whose brain is still forming. What are you thinking?!?

You’re asking us for advice about something you’ve never heard of nor tried? And you want to give it to a child??? No. Absolutely not.

Let me be clear here:

Unless you are an experienced master, a shaman of this pharmaceutical (the fact that it is of herbal origin is irrelevant) and have taken it many, many times yourself under many conditions and under the guidance of other masters, what you are suggesting is grossly irresponsible and will make you liable for any and all ill effects or trauma suffered by a child – or anyone else, for that matter.

Sorry to be so blunt. But I am deeply concerned about your nephew. At this stage, he needs to be learning how to manage his own experience naturally, without chemical aids of any kind. Period.

Regards,

Selene

I grew up in the 70's where some of my young friend's parents thought it would be alright to engage children in drugs... WRONG, it did some damage and some of them are still messed up by it. Age 13 is too young to try those types of herbs, could do some damage that you don't want. A 13 year-old he is still growing, don't give him something that could potentially harm him or f__k up his mind. Sorry so adamant, but I have experienced it first hand when I was a young child teen.

I would not subject a young boy with a still developing intellect, personality, brain & heart to any such thing! That would be tantmount to abuse.

Hi Indigo, Ive been looking into it too, although i havent tried anything yet, I have read that Galantamine or Choline are lucid dream suppliments. And a dream herb called Calea Z. As ive said I have tried neither, but Im interested as i find it hard to remember my dreams.
About to look into selene capensis - so thank you for the info.

DMAE (Dimethylethanolamine) is better than choline for dream inducing. I have used it the effects on me were pretty interesting. Dreaming became as vivid as waking day, and I am also one to not normally recall my dreams. Hard to find the stuff these days though. I think it is considered a pharma product by most regulatory agencies, but there may be the odd specialty supplement store that carries it.
