This site chronicles over fifty years of Dr. Koch’s scientific research as he investigated and eventually isolated the most fundamental factor common to all disease. Dr. Koch’s epoch making discovery of this Least Common Denominator led to the ‘birth of a new science.’

Through extensive documentation Dr. Koch outlined the chemical processes by which disease may be reversed. Dr. Koch’s research focused on the means to restore the body’s oxidation mechanism back to its original vitality, thereby re-equipping the body with its innate ability to restore and maintain health, not only in cancers but also in a host of its ‘allied diseases.’

This research led to Dr. Koch’s development of several synthetic antitoxins: Glyoxylide, Malonide and PBQ. These catalysts became the stimulant necessary to achieve the oxidative separation of the ‘host cell/pathogen integration,’ when the pathogen was a virus, a carcinogen, a bacterial toxin or an incompletely burned tissue metabolite. Dr. Koch successfully defined the position of the activated amine group, the free radical, the double bond and the Carbonyl group in pathogenesis and in its correction.

Of historic significance is the knowledge that as early as 1919, Dr. Koch’s discoveries were taking him in a direction diametrically opposed to the position held by Organized Medicine, which at that time was investing heavily in the development of radium and surgery as the most promising treatments for cancer.

After failing in its attempt to gain sole control over his research, Organized Medicine launched a fifty-year, unlimited assault aimed at discrediting Dr. Koch’s reputation, medical practice and research, along with those of any physician who dared to validate his Theories or use his Reagents. Organized Medicine developed an extensive propaganda campaign, disseminated false information on Reagent chemistry and publicly dismissed the Koch Theories, which emphasized the relationship between environmental toxins, dietary deficiencies and a depleted oxidation mechanism, as primary initiators of the disease process.

Because Dr. Koch endured such extensive persecution in regard to his science, he determined that the medical/pharmacological industry would forever remain unwilling to independently monitor, document or validate any of his ongoing laboratory research or medical case histories; therefore since his death, December 9, 1967, there have been no authentic Koch Reagents reproduced. It was because of the scurrilous intentions held by the medical/pharmacological industry that Dr. Koch intentionally withheld specific knowledge required in the production of viable Koch Reagents. (Therefore, any claims to the contrary should be viewed as suspect.)

Koch was a genius, devising new techniques on several cancer fronts.

Working Summary: Koch was a brilliant researcher/physician who first improved on Coley’s fever treatment, and then develop Glyoxylide which destroyed cancer tissue by bringing oxygen to it. Could Glyoxylide be hydrogen peroxide? Glyoxylide is no longer available, nor do we know the formula.

In 1931, Otto Warburg received the Nobel prize, in physiology and medicine for some of his work, which related to his discovery that cancer cells cannot survive in the presence of oxygen.

But a decade earlier, a remarkable man of the highest intellect had anticipated Warburg’s discovery.In this report, his theories of cancer and methods for treating it are closely interwoven.Dr. Koch had an M.D., Ph.D., was a teacher at a medical college and a careful researcher. He it was who, before the age of 30, discovered that the removal of the parathyroids would produce death. Physicians were routinely removing thyroids and wondering why so many of their patients died from tetany (the parathyroids regulate calcium metabolism).

About the year 1915, while teaching at the University of Detroit, Koch noted that there was a marked coagulation of blood and tissues in cancer tissue. He reasoned that, since this normally was a protective mechanism because of toxic problems, injury, or irritation, could it be that there might be toxins in the cancer tissue which could be removed?

With this in mind, Koch set about devising a means of eliminating those toxins.Actually, Koch had a good basis of thinking. It is now known that cancer frequently is a garbage dump for poisons and waste products produced by wrong eating, overeating, stress, environmental chemicals, etc.

Koch’s first treatment method was to initiate a fevered condition in the body which burn off the toxins. From 1888 to 1936, William Coley, M.D., did this also, using strep germs; but Koch’s fever therapy method was more consistent—and without the aid of a dangerous infection. Koch’s fever treatments were effected by means of tissue thrombin, a ferment which brings on a fever when heat burns off the toxic elements in the system.

Then in 1920, following eight successful recoveries,Koch announced that he had a cure for cancer. Immediately, the surgeons in charge of the Wayne County Medical Society instituted a war against him.

By that decade, surgery was still the most profitable treatment for cancer. It was not until the late 1940s that the cost of cancer drugs was raised enough, to make them equally profitable. From then on, chemotherapy ranked with surgery and radiation as the approved medical treatments for cancer.

Another aspect of Koch’s brilliant thinking revolved around sugar metabolism. Fifteen years before Warburg discovered the same principle (and received a Noble prize the following year for doing so), Koch had stumbled upon the fact that sugar oxidation was a key factor in cancer formation.According to his thinking, if the sugars could be oxidized, the cancer would be reduced. What was needed was more oxygen to the site of the tumor.

Although Koch already had one treatment for cancer (fever therapy), he set to work devising another—one which would not require the fever.He searched for more active catalysts to stimulate the body’s capacity to oxidize toxins. —The result was Glyoxylide. This is the name he gave a liquid formula which he developed. Koch was an extremely capable and original thinker. His bold idea was that Glyoxylide would cause toxins in the cancer cells (and elsewhere in the body) to be changed into antitoxins—by oxydizing them.

This was to be done by adding molecules which changed their composition.Another part of Koch’s theory was that cancer was caused by a germ or virus; and that originally it was harmless, but only became deadly when poisoned by the toxins in the system.

This concept closely relates to the discoveries of Royal Rife in the 1930s, a young man who, subsidized by the Mr. Timpkin (owner of Timpkin Roller Bearing Company), invented a super-powerful microscope (the Rife microscope) and, then, with it, he discovered that germs change from one type to another, depending on conditions in the body. One stage is a fungus; the last is cancer.

That was in the days before the development of the electron microscope, but there has been silence in regard to any efforts made, using the electron microscope to duplicate Rife’s germ transformations which occur in toxic bodies. (See Pleomorphism,later in this book.)

Koch’s theories were never investigated by the medical authorities. He was treated as a charlatan and fake. Although Glyoxylide was said to be nothing more than distilled water, no examination was ever made to determine exactly what it was.

The Koch treatment was more rounded than that of some others. He did not rely merely on Glyoxylide, but also required a rigid diet which excluded all foods which were toxic or contained oxygen inhibitors. Included in this list were meats, beans, lentils, coffee, alcohol, and tomatoes.Only distilled water was to be drunk,and daily enemas were required. Koch maintained that both the diet changes and the Glyoxylide were needed to eliminate the cancer.

Individuals taking the Koch treatment needed no hospitalization. The person would receive one injection of Glyoxylide and no more for about six weeks or until decreased oxidation was observed.As with all worthwhile natural alternate remedies for cancer while on the program, pain would subside and tend to disappear. This tends to be a hallmark of genuine cancer remedies.

In 1933, Koch published his book, Cancer and Allied Diseases, in which he explained the thinking behind his treatments. He maintained that cancer resulted from years of toxic conditions in the body. When the cancer growth begins, these toxic conditions lessen somewhat, since some are being stored in the cancerous tissue,somewhat as you might place garbage in a garbage can, so the house can remain clean and neat. Surgery, by removing the surrounding container, damages the house and does nothing to reduce the influx of toxins.

Koch said that cancer was a response of protection against dangerous toxins; it tried to bottle them up in tumors. He also maintained that, when the toxins were eliminated, the cancer would automatically shrink and disappear;and all its essential elements would be reabsorbed by the body.

In contrast, Koch declared that cutting out pieces of the body, to rid it of a cancerous condition,accomplished nothing positive but instead it caused great injury, weakened the body,and laid the groundwork for even more trouble later on. Surgery and biopsy, Koch said, only spread cancer faster. Yet, he added, it was the surgeons who were given the authority to decide which remedies could be approved!

Several top physicians, throughout the world,saw the value of the Koch treatment and began using it—until threats stopped them. This included Allen, of Tulane University; Bryan, of Vanderbilt University; Maisin, of Belgium; Godfrey, in Toronto; and Kannel, of Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

One of these, Forbes Godfrey, who for 26 years was the Canadian Minister of Health and Education,said, “Radium has a dangerous effect on the human system. In a couple of years people who have used it usually die suddenly because it affects the heart.”

J.W. Kannel later testified about how, over a period of 14 years, he had successfully treated 72 cases with the Koch preparation. Many were hopelessly advanced to begin with. About a third were still alive.He noted that, before adopting the Koch treatment,he had operated on at least 50 cases of cancer,had followed surgery with X-ray or radium,—and yet the longest survival time had been only two and a half years.Kannel mentioned that, on a visit to Mayo Clinic, he saw a surgeon remove five cancerous breasts in one day. When asked about success rate, the surgeon admitted that surgery and radiation accomplished nothing, but that he did not know what else to do.

In 1940-1941 in Brazil, Koch successfully treated leprosy, tuberculosis, and mental conditions.

Then an agent for a large pharmaceutical firm (which reaped immense profits from repeatedinjections into the insane) shook his fist in Koch’s face and said he would not be interfering much longer in Brazil.

In April 1942, Koch was arrested in Florida for “false labeling” of his product. The district attorney demanded an immense bail of $10,000.

When asked why, since only murder cases required such a bail, the DA admitted that he had received orders from Detroit to do this so Koch would not return to Brazil and finish his research there.

Both in 1942 and 1946, the FDA fought Koch in two bitter trials, claiming that the remedies were indistinguishable from distilled water. A temporary injunction was made to stop his work until a thorough investigation could be made. Of course,the investigation was remarkably slow in getting started. In 1950, the injunction was made permanent.

Koch had been stopped.At this juncture, Koch gave his formulas and methods to the Christian Medical Research League of Detroit, and then moved permanently to Brazil.

But the preparation was incompetently processed,was no longer effective, and was soon abandoned.

Meanwhile, another cancer investigation was set up, this time in Ontario, Canada. One witness,J.W. Kannel of Fort Wayne, Indiana, told of treating 72 patients in 14 years with Glyoxylide, due to their own pleadings for help. He said they were too hopeless for any other kind of treatment. Of that number, 21 were still alive and four others had died of other causes. Kannel said it was the first cancer treatment he had ever found which provided any hope. In spite of such testimony, no formal report of this hearing was ever made.

And similarly with Dr. W. R. Reich. Hounded and imprisoned. (As with Koch bthe storm troops were the FDA.) See his "Cancer Biopathy". He was right in so many ways, particulary with his association of the biopathy with characterology. Yes, and I believe he found the cancer tissues were oxygen starved. I think Koch's work and Reich's work support each other as characterology is related to the immune system and how the body handles toxins. Koch's "fever" therapy seems to me a way to stimulate a weak immune system.

Hello Mr. Jackson,

Thank you for pointing out the work of William Reich. I don't know much about his work, but I do understand how he was persecuted like many brilliant scientists who think out of the box, or are too ahead of their time, or for whatever reason the establishment views them as a threat to their power without regard for what is in the best interest of humanity.

I am mostly a follower of law and economics and when the establishment manipulates money for greed and power well that makes them crooks. But when these same people manipulate the medical industry, that makes them murderers.

So many people on this site, like those of society at large seem to have been touched by cancer. So perhaps the manipulation and politics of it might be well worth talking about those murderers.

There are many good options for cancer under the radar. I think the doctor talking in the utube presentation is one of the pioneers in giving people good odds of getting better.

If cancer is the result of a change in the the body chemistry due to toxins, however, the body got poisoned with those toxins, it does make sense to change the body's chemistry back to normal and in doing so the disease melts away. This is a very simplistic way of describing it, but I think that is the bottom line. Changing the body chemistry naturally to what it was before the toxicity took over. I believe Dr. Koch had several tricks up his sleeve in dealing with cancer, but I think the repairing of he body chemistry to have the mitochondria once again function normally was one of the keys, although, I am far from knowledgeable on this topic. But I think there is great importance in people talking about these great scientists who had the cure for cancer and were persecuted. People have learned and talked about how the money system has been manipulated. I think it would help stop murder if the masses started talking openly about these Scientists and what they had to offer and what the establishment did to them.
And I think it would serve humanity well and perhaps eventually stop or at least slow these murders down. So often people have little interest, or are unaware of theses murderers until one comes face to face with cancer by their own diagnosis or that of a family or friend.

I would hope people would listen to the 36 minute utube presentation in the opening post and perhaps look into it a bit more and the Doctor who is talking.

Yup, kinda depressing when you leave a WalMart and there's a table outside with some well-intentioned neighbors trying to raise funds for one kind of cancer "research" or another. When what they should be doing is passing out flyers about people like this, and Priore, and Rife. Or passing out copies of Ellen Brown's book, Forbidden Medicine.

Anyone in the past century who has made progress with cancer has been run into the ground and destroyed. And yet, people continue to pour thousands of dollars into all this feel-good "research" that is completely controlled by the people behind most of the cancer problems.

There have even been cases like with Yoplait, where they are putting pink ribbons on a product that CONTAINS a known cancer-causing agent. And yet the sheep continue the grazing, fat, dumb, and sorta happy.

“Antoine Prioré (or Priore) (April 10, 1912 – May 9, 1983) was born in Trieste, Italy. Prioré received training in electrical engineering and was a radar technician for the Italian Navy. (Perisse, 1984) He was a prisoner of the German Nazi occupation of Bordeaux, France, until he was rescued by the French resistance in 1944. (Bird, 1984)
It is said by Internet sources that in 1944 Priore noticed some oranges that had been left next to some electrical equipment. These oranges remained in a fresh state while others not near the electrical equipment became rotten and putrid.[1]
Priore worked for 25 years (between 1950 and 1975) in Bordeaux, and built a series of electromagnetic devices producing a strong magnetic field of 600 gauss (60 mT) or more for the purpose of treating cancer and disease. Electromagnetic therapy is characterised as pseudoscientific by most modern medical researchers.
His last device was funded by the French government with the help of one-time Prime Minister of France Jacques Chaban-Delmas. Prioré also built a large device (M-600) for the purpose of treating people with cancer. (Graille, 1984) Prioré reported to have treated a number of animals with cancer with his device, but it broke down before it could be applied to human patients. (Graille, 1984) Prioré claimed to have cured a number of terminal cancer patients with his earlier devices. (Bird, 1984) Prioré's research attracted the attention of the French media in 1965 who dubbed it "L'affaire Priore".
Prioré was accused of manipulating his scientific data by the French Academy of Sciences. (Rorvik, 1975) French journalists also accused Prioré of not understanding his own technique for treating cancer and disease. (Ibid.) Prioré never exposed his exact method, believing others would only steal it for themselves. (Bird, 1984) Members of the French Academy of Sciences and media alike seriously questioned the legitimacy of Prioré's research, with many accusing him of fraud. (Graille, 1984) The U.S. Office of Naval Research evaluated Prioré's patents. The patents seemed deliberately made unclear, leaving little information to ascertain the mechanical and electromagnetic workings of Prioré's devices. (Bateman, 1978)”



I included the above, for those, who like me, may have not known the name. But indeed all very interesting. I am a little familiar with bio electrics and how they can be healthy for the body. Besides Dr Raymond Royal Rife, I was thinking of George Lakhovsky and his magnificent work of the magnetic wave oscillator that was used in Europe to cure disease. He was invited to a New York Hospital where his invention was used to cure disease until he was “run over by a car”, at which time all his machines and work were removed from the hospital and was never heard of again. And unfortunately the American Public never was educated to his work. Although some Nassau Scientist, and others, have been able to back engineer his magnetic wave oscillator.

I also am unfamiliar with Jimmy Keller, so lifted this off the net for others who may also be unfamiliar with what happened to him and the Work of Ellen Brown in trying to get this information out:

I also appreciate your reference to Yoplait and the pink ribbon. I assume you are referring to High Fructose as the offending ingredient. I am so glad you pointed that out.....

We all are responsible for our health and it can be quite the learning curb in knowing all we need to know to do that, r rather push aside all the garbage and get to the core work that will cure the illness. So sharing information is good for everyone.

I am particularly interested in the Doctor who did audio in the first post because he has studied these giant’s work in depth for 18 years. And from his scientific background, he then applied that knowledge in a concrete , results oriented way to help people.

I can imagine there are many out there who are carrying out this great work.

Sad, isn't it... Jimmy Keller gets hounded by the feds, even into Mexico, and finally arrested on some bogus charges, I think it had to do with talking over the phone with someone across the US border. (That's what they were trying to bust him on, but not sure if that's what the actual charges were. If he makes any claims to a potential client over the phone, they could nail him for some fraud.)

So our United States federal officials put him in prison with a longer sentence than a multiple murderer would get. Where are his supporters when Komen does another cancer walk???

It was tragic what they did to Jimmy Keller. But at least he got to help some people although he paid the ultimate price for doing so and tragically he stood alone in doing so as often is the case for people willing to do what is right. He should not be forgotten.

Below is a short 15 minute utube presentation on Carnivora. This is an inexpensive supplement often used by naturalpaths as an alternative to chemo. It is pretty powerful stuff. Although when the German Cancer clinics were first using it, it was not legal in the US I think, But President Reagan had it flown in from Germany while he had colon cancer in the White house. Now it's easy to get and they make it right here in the US, in Connecticut, I believe. The video is well done by an MD explaining the benefits of Carnivora. And people with cancer might want to look into it and consult their health care team about using it.... Or even contact this Doctor. I don’t post often , mostly just read, but I was so surprise to see BX being discussed on Avalon. I thought BX was way under everyone’s radar! I had never heard of it before until last year when a woman I knew was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, in both breasts, It was scary. She, along with her doctor, went on a scouting expedition to find the best therapy for her , as she rejected the idea of chemo. After interviewing many clinics and doctors with different therapies, they decided on BX as their choice treatment. Obviously it was the right choice because she went on BX and within six months was cancer free! She has been cancer free now for almost a year. I know she tells everyone about it, as I do. I just never thought about positing about it on Avalon. I am glad someone did! Also she was extremely lucky to have a doctor help her find this therapy as most doctors would not risk the possible repercussions from the medical establishment in recommending treatment outside of chemo, radiation and surgery.

I am wondering if other readers have been on this BX or know someone who has and what their experience was. And that doctor had a lot of integrity to be so supportive of your friend. Not too many doctors I know would have been so involved as to help find the best therapy for cancer outside of conventional medicine.

I know how America treats those who think outside the box concerning cancer therapy. I am wondering how other countries treat people who think outside the box in either offering therapy to cancer patients, or to the patients themselves who seek therapy outside of Chemo, radiation and surgery. Outside of America, have medical research scientists, who came up with bondafide treatments for cancer, outside the medical Industrial complex, been exiled, persecuted, had their lives destroyed, or even murdered like has been done here in America?

Diane Sawyer Announces Results Of Harvard
"Miracle Study"... But Leaves Out The Most Critical Part
There it was. I thought the "cat was out of the bag." I watched Diane Sawyer reading the nightly news on ABC, announcing to the world the results of a breakthrough Harvard study that made old mice young again.
At the beginning of this experiment the mice were old in every measurable feature. These mice had lost their intelligence. Every one of them had performed poorly on the standard memory tests like remembering their way out of a maze or where their food or water was. And, they all had atrophied or shrunken brains.
They had lost their desire for sexual activity and had become infertile. Their hair had changed from glossy and youthful to dull and gray. Their vision was dimming, with the same kind of loss of peripheral vision that we see in humans with age.
Not surprising considering the mice were the equivalent of humans in their 80s and 90s.
Then, as if by miracle, each and every one of these signs of aging was completely reversed.
They became sexually potent again, and the females actually became fertile and produced healthy offspring again — at the equivalent of a very elder age.

Thanks for the link, Sheme. I do think increasing the length of telemores is very promising for health and slowing down the aging process. What I found interesting about Dr Sears comments was that he was able to regain the length of his telomeres of his lungs to that of a 25- year- old. The post I put up by him was an older post, and I found a more recent one where he was even more shocked by his latest blood test claiming that it is now showing that his telemores continued to grow and as of today, Feb 2014 his telemores of his lungs are that of an 18-year-old. I know he has been working at it for 4 or 5 years. Its all very interesting and yet how is he public made aware of these breakthroughs so the they can demand more from their doctors? But then again, I suppose one could just become a patient of Dr Sears to get the cutting edge updated research. It is definitely worth following the information.

Cancer is the most frightening human disease and its cause remains elusive. Therefore, it seems inconceivable that the discovery of a germ cause of cancer would provoke such hostility among the cancer establishment. But, in truth, the belief in a cancer germ has always been the ultimate scientific heresy.

In the long history of cancer research there was never a physician more outspoken and controversial than Virginia Wuerthele-Caspe Livingston (1906-1990). For more than 40 years she championed the revolutionary idea that bacteria caused cancer and devised a treatment to try and combat these microbes by immunotherapy.

Sixteen years after her death she is now largely forgotten but still condemned by such powerful organizations as the American Cancer Society-and blacklisted on Quackwatch-a self-proclaimed "non-profit corporation dedicated to combating health-related frauds, myths, fads, and fallacies. "

LIVINGSTON'S CANCER RESEARCH

Beginning in the late 1940s, Livingston was able to grow bacteria from cancer tumors; and when she and her associates injected cancer bacteria into laboratory animals, some developed cancer. Other animals developed degenerative and proliferative diseases, and some animals remained healthy. Livingston believed the "immunity" of the host was an important factor in determining whether cancer would develop.

In 1969 at a meeting at the New York Academy of Sciences , Livingston and her colleagues proposed that cancer was caused by a highly unusual bacterium which she named Progenitor cryptocides-Greek for 'ancestral hidden killer.' Neverthless, Livingston claimed elements of the microbe were present in every human cell. Due to its biochemical properties, she believed the organism was responsible for initiating life and for the healing of tissue-and for killing us with cancer and other infirmities. Critics of this research continued to insist there was no such thing as a cancer germ.

In her attempt to use a variety of modalities (diet, supplements, antibiotics, as well as traditional methods) to treat cancer, she utilized an 'autogenous' vaccine derived from the patient's own cancer bacteria found in the urine and blood. Livingston explained it was not an anti-cancer vaccine, but rather a vaccine to help stimulate and improve the patient's own immune system. The administration of this unapproved vaccine caused a furor in the cancer establishment and eventually legal action was undertaken against her and the Livingston-Wheeler Clinic in San Diego. In spite of all her legal troubles, she continued seeing patients until her death at 83.

In March 1990, the year of her death, a highly critical article on the Livingston-Wheeler therapy appeared in the American Cancer Society-sponsored CA: A Cancer Journal for Physicians. (No authors were listed.) The report advised patients to stay away from the San Diego clinic and claimed: "Livingston-Wheeler's cancer treatment is based on the belief that cancer is caused by a bacterium she has named Progenitor cryptocides. Careful research using modern techniques, however, has shown that there is no such organism and that Livingston-Wheeler has apparently mistaken several different types of bacteria, both rare and common, for a unique microbe. In spite of diligent research to isolate a cancer-causing microorganism, none has been found. Similarly, Livingston-Wheeler's autologous vaccine cannot be considered an effective treatment for cancer. While many oncologists have expressed the hope that someday a vaccine will be developed against cancer, the cause(s) of cancer must be determined before research can be directed toward developing a vaccine. The rationale for other facets of the Livingston-Wheeler cancer therapy is similarly faulty. No evidence supports her contention that cancer results from a defective immune system, that a whole-foods diet restores immune system deficiencies, that abscisic acid slows tumor growth, or that cancer is transmitted to humans by chickens." BACTERIA AS A CAUSE OF CANCER

The recognition of disease-producing bacteria allowed medical science to emerge from the dark ages into the era of modern medicine. In the late nineteenth century when diseases like tuberculosis (TB) , syphilis, and leprosy were proven to be caused by bacteria, some doctors also suspected human cancer might have a similar cause.

The idea that bacteria cause cancer is considered preposterous by most physicians. However, despite the antagonistic view of the American Cancer Society and medical science, there is ample evidence in the published peer-reviewed literature that strongly suggests that 'cancer microbes' cause cancer.

According to reports by Livingston and various other researchers, cancer is caused by pleomorphic, cell wall deficient bacteria. The various forms of the organism range in size from submicroscopic virus-like forms, up to the size of bacteria, yeasts, and fungi. In culture and in tissue the bacterial forms are variably 'acid-fast' (having a staining quality like TB bacteria). These bacteria are ubiquitous and exist in the blood and tissues of all human beings (yet another 'heresy'). In the absence of a protective immune response, these cell wall deficient bacteria may become pathogenic and foster the development of cancer , autoimmune disease, AIDS, and certain other chronic diseases of unknown etiology.

Needless to say, all this research fell on dead ears because bacteria were totally ruled out as the cause of all cancers in the early years of the twentieth century. Thus, bacteria observed in cancer were simply dismissed as elements of cellular degeneration, or as invaders of tissue weakened by cancer, or as 'contaminants' of laboratory origin.


LIVINGSTON AND PROGENITOR CRYPTOCIDES

Beginning in1950, in a series of papers and books, Livingston and her co-workers claimed the cancer microbe was a great imitator whose various pleomorphic forms resembled common staphylococci, diphtheroids, fungi, viruses, and host cell inclusions. Yet if the germ were studied carefully through all its transitional stages, it could be identified as a single agent. She was the first to suggest that the acid-fast stain was the key to the identification of the cancer microbe in tissue and in culture; and also demonstrated its appearance in the blood of cancer patients, by use of dark-field microscopy.

Anyone who takes the time to read Livingston's reports in the medical literature will quickly recognize that she was a credible research scientist, who allied herself with other experts-and was certainly not the quack doctor pictured by her detractors. Her achievements in cancer microbiology can also be found in her autobiographical books: Cancer, A New Breakthrough (1972); The Microbiology of Cancer (1977); and The Conquest of Cancer (1984). Her research has been confirmed by other scientists, such as microbiologist Eleanor Alexander-Jackson, cell cytologist Irene Diller, biochemist Florence Seibert, and dermatologist Alan Cantwell, among others.

THE CANCER MICROBE AND BACTERIAL PLEOMORPHISM

Microbiologists have long resisted the idea of bacterial pleomorphism, and do not recognize or accept the various growth forms and the bacterial 'life cycle' proposed by various cancer microbe workers. Most bacteriologists do not accept the idea of a bacterium changing from a coccus to a rod, or to a fungus. Depending on the environment, the microbe in its cell wall-deficient phase may attain large size, even larger that a red blood cell. Other forms are submicroscopic and virus-sized. Electronic microscopic studies and photographs of filtered (bacteria-free) cultures of the cancer microbe show virus-size elements of the cancer microbe that can revert into bacterial-sized microbes.

The cancer microbe has adapted to life in man and animals by existing in a mycoplasma-like or cell wall deficient state. In tissue sections of cancer stained for bacteria with the special acid-fast stain, the microbe can be seen as a variably acid-fast (blue, red, or purple-stained) round coccus or as barely visible granules . At magnifications of one thousand times (in oil), these forms can be observed within and also outside of the cells.

Careful study and observation of the tiny round coccoid forms in cancer tissue indicate they can enlarge progressively up to the size of so-called Russell bodies, which are well-known to pathologists. Russell bodies can attain the size of red blood cells, and even larger.
William Russell was a well-respected Scottish pathologist who in 1890 first reported the finding of 'cancer parasites' in the tissue of all the cancers he studied. However, modern pathologists deny that Russell's bodies are microbial in origin. OVERLOOKING HIDDEN BACTERIA IN CANCER

Once bacteria were eliminated as a cause of cancer a century ago, it became dogma and impossible to change medical opinion. In this current era of medical science, one would think it impossible for infectious disease experts and pathologists to not recognize bacteria in cancer. However, bacteria can still pop up in diseases in which they were initially overlooked.
When a new and deadly lung disease broke out among legionnaires in Philadelphia in July 1976, two hundred twenty-two people became ill and thirty-four died. The cause of the killer lung disease remained a medical mystery for over five months until Joe McDade at the Leprosy Branch of the CDC detected unusual bacteria in guinea pigs experimentally infected with lung tissue from the dead legionnaires. Further modification of bacterial culture methods finally allowed the isolation of the causative and previously overlooked bacteria, now known as Legionella pneumophila.

Yet another example of dogma-defying research is provided by recent studies proving that bacteria (Helicobacter pylori) are a common cause of stomach ulcers, which can sometimes lead to stomach cancer and lymphoma. For a century, physicians refused to believe bacteria caused ulcers because they thought bacteria could not live in the acid environment of the stomach. In 2005 the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to two Australian researchers for their 1982 discovery. These stomach bacteria could only be detected by use of special tissue stains. The CDC now claims that H. pylori causes more than 90% of duodenal ulcers and 80% of gastric ulcers. Approximately two-thirds of the world's population is infected with these microbes.

In the past four years there have been medical reports of newly discovered bacteria in serious lymph node disease; in Hodgkin's lymphoma; in cancer of the mouth; and in prostate cancer, to name only a few.

All these studies prove bacteria can pop up in diseases where they are least expected. Such a caveat is appropriate for doctors who think they know everything about cancer and who pooh-pooh all aspects of cancer microbe research.


A CENTURY OF CANCER MICROBE RESEARCH

Livingston never claimed that she was the discoverer of the microbe of cancer. In her writings she always gave credit to various scientists, some dating back to the nineteenth century, who attempted to prove that bacteria cause cancer. Some of these remarkable researchers include the long-forgotten cancer microbe studies of Scottish obstetrician James Young, Chicago physician John Nuzum, Montana surgeon James Scott, the infamous psychiatrist and cancer researcher Wilhelm Reich, microscopist Raymond Royal Rife, and others too numerous to mention.
This cancer microbe research has been explored in my books The Cancer Microbe: The Hidden Killer in Cancer, AIDS, and Other Immune Diseases [1990] and in Four Women Against Cancer: Bacteria, Cancer, and the Origin of Life [2005]-the story of Livingston, Alexander-Jackson, Diller and Seibert-four outstanding women scientists who attempted to bring the cancer microbe to the attention of a disinterested medical establishment. I was privileged to have met all these remarkable women, who greatly influenced my own cancer research.

Why is research exploring bacteria in cancer so strongly opposed? Perhaps it poses a threat to the money interests involved in the established and orthodox treatment for cancer. Various forms of cancer treatment include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. These therapies might have to be reevaluated if it were proven that cancer was an infectious disease.

This short communication is unlikely to convince many health professionals that bacteria cause cancer. Ralph W Moss, cancer advocate and author of The Cancer Industry, notes her passing was "a major loss to the cancer world." In the Cancer Chronicles #6, 1990, he writes, "Virginia Livingston was a great person and a great scientist. Sadly, she never received the recognition she deserved in her lifetime. The true scope of her achievements will only become known in years to come."

"The Dirty Secret I Was Told Directly
For years, I read that large pharmaceutical companies buy up effective cancer drugs and intentionally suppress them in order to protect their highly profitable patented drugs. I never quite believed it until I heard it directly from a mainstream researcher.

For the first time, I had dinner with a hardcore mainstream medical oncologist/researcher. The purpose of this meeting was to seek Life Extension® funding for a promising cancer drug. This was my first interaction with a mainstream oncologist—other than to have them arrogantly tell me what they won’t do for their patients.

He taught his system all over the US and India, and more than 80% of his students were medical doctors.

And then, out of nowhere, the American Medical Association Journal published a highly critical article. Almost immediately, most doctors who were using his system with great success stopped offering it to their patients. And the AMA/FDA persecution began in earnest.

He was brought to trial eight times, and served 18 months in jail - for medical “fraud.”

His equipment was seized, and his books publicly burned. In America, land of the free.

Injunctions were taken out to stop the transport of anything that bore his name across state lines.

The US Post Office refused to deliver mail to the non-profit Dinshah Spectro-Chrome Institute, stamped it “FRAUDULENT,” and returned it to the senders.

And in 1945, the Institute itself was burned to the ground in a “mystery” fire.

But Dinshah P. Ghadiali, who met Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison, never gave up. He believed in man’s inherent goodness and nobility, and that the truth would always win out.

He died in 1966.

But his three sons continue to disseminate this great man’s discoveries to the world as best they can.

Incredibly, medicine has now started to quietly co-opt Dinshah’s discoveries as its own. It’s called “phototherapy,” and it uses lasers. This means that doctors get to charge big bucks for it."

New Way to Fight Cancer?

There are no magic bullets in the fight against cancer: that's the first thing every responsible scientist mentions when discussing a possible new treatment, no matter how promising. If there were a magic bullet, though, it might be something like dichloroacetate, or DCA, a drug that kills cancer cells by exploiting a fundamental weakness found in a wide range of solid tumors. So far, though, it kills them just in test tubes and in rats infected with human cancer cells; it has never been tested against cancer in living human beings. DCA ... is an existing drug whose side effects are well-studied and relatively tolerable. Also, it's a small molecule that might be able to cross the blood-brain barrier to reach otherwise intractable brain tumors. Within days after a technical paper on DCA appeared in the journal Cancer Cell last week, the lead author, Dr. Evangelos Michelakis of the University of Alberta, was deluged with calls and e-mails from prospective patients—to whom he can say only, “Hang in there.” DCA is a remarkably simple molecule. It acts in the body to promote the activity of the mitochondria. Researchers have assumed that the mitochondria in cancer cells were irreparably damaged. But Michelakis wondered if that was really true. With his colleagues he used DCA to turn back on the mitochondria in cancer cells—which promptly died. One of the great things about DCA is that it's a simple compound, in the public domain, and could be produced for pennies a dose. But that's also a problem, because big drug companies are unlikely to spend a billion dollars or so on large-scale clinical trials for a compound they can't patent.

Patents Over Patients

We could make faster progress against cancer by changing the way drugs are developed. In the current system, if a promising compound can’t be patented, it is highly unlikely ever to make it to market — no matter how well it performs in the laboratory. The development of new cancer drugs is crippled as a result. The reason for this problem is that bringing a new drug to market is extremely expensive. In 2001, the estimated cost was $802 million; today it is approximately $1 billion. To ensure a healthy return on such staggering investments, drug companies seek to formulate new drugs in a way that guarantees watertight patents. In the meantime, cancer patients miss out on treatments that may be highly effective and less expensive to boot. In 2004, Johns Hopkins researchers discovered that an off-the-shelf compound called 3-bromopyruvate could arrest the growth of liver cancer in rats. The results were dramatic; moreover, the investigators estimated that the cost to treat patients would be around 70 cents per day. Yet, three years later, no major drug company has shown interest in developing this drug. The hormone melatonin, sold as an inexpensive food supplement in the United States, has repeatedly been shown to slow the growth of various cancers when used in conjunction with conventional treatments. Early this year, another readily available industrial chemical, dichloroacetate, was found by researchers at the University of Alberta to shrink tumors in laboratory animals by up to 75 percent. However ... dichloroacetate is not patentable, and the lead researcher is concerned that it may be difficult to find funding from private investors to test the chemical. Potential anticancer drugs should be judged on their scientific merit, not on their patentability.

Rumor: New drug shrinks, cures all tumors

Researchers say they have created a drug that has killed every kind of cancer tumor it has come in contact with, according to Science Magazine. The antibody treatment works by blocking a protein called CD47 which tricks the body into not destroying cancerous cells. After the protein is blocked, the body can then recognize the cancer cells as invaders and attack. While the research is seen as a step closer to discovering a treatment that can cure all cancers, the drug has only been tested on mice and will need to prove itself on humans before it can be available to patients. This may take a few years. The research team has been given the green light and recently received a four-year, $20 million grant to conduct human clinical trials. Research for this new drug started a decade ago when biologist Irving Weissman at Stanford University was studying leukemia cells. He found that that leukemia cells produce higher levels of the CD47 protein than healthy cells. CD47 acts as a "don't-eat-me" signal, instructing the body to not eat harmful cells. Cancers take advantage of this signal to trick the immune system into ignoring them. Weissman's research showed that blocking CD47 can cure more than just blood cancers. The drug can also shrink or cure human breast, ovary, colon, bladder, brain, liver and prostate tumors that have been transplanted into mice. The treatment forced the mice's immune system to kill the cancer cells. This means this single drug could cure a variety of cancers and prevent cancers from spreading in the body.

Researcher sets saltwater on fire

Last winter, inventor John Kanzius was already attempting one seemingly impossible feat -- building a machine to cure cancer with radio waves -- when his device inadvertently succeeded in another: He made saltwater catch fire. TV footage of his bizarre discovery has been burning up the blogosphere ever since, drawing crackpots and Ph.D.s alike into a raging debate. Can water burn? And if so, what good can come of it? Some people gush over the invention's potential for desalinization or cheap energy. Briny seawater, after all, sloshes over most of the planet's surface, and harnessing its heat energy could power all sorts of things. Skeptics say Kanzius's radio generator is sucking up far more energy than it's creating, making it a carnival trick at best. For now, Kanzius is tuning out the hubbub. Diagnosed with leukemia in 2002, he began building his radio-wave blaster the next year, soon after a relapse. If he could seed a person's cancerous cells with nanoscopic metal particles and blast them with radio waves, perhaps he could kill off the cancer while sparing healthy tissue. The saltwater phenomenon happened by accident when an assistant was bombarding a saline-filled test tube with radio waves and bumped the tube, causing a small flash. Curious, Kanzius struck a match. "The water lit like a propane flame," he recalls. "People said, 'It's a crock. Look for hidden electrodes in the water,' " says Penn State University materials scientist Rustum Roy, who visited [Kanzius] in his lab in August after seeing the feat on Google Video. A demo made Roy a believer. "This is discovery science in the best tradition," he says. Meanwhile, researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have made progress using Kanzius's technology to fight cancer in animals. They published their findings last month in the journal Cancer.

Sixteen-year-old Jack Andraka's innovative mind led him to create a new way to detect pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancer. "I created a new way to detect pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancer that costs three cents and takes five minutes to run," he said. After a close friend died from pancreatic cancer, this 16-year-old from Crownsville, Maryland, unleashed his hyper-drive intellect on preventing more cancer deaths. "It's 168 times faster, over 26,000 times less expensive, and over 400 times more sensitive than our current methods of diagnosis," he said. Tinkering in his room and using information readily available online, he came up with a new way to detect cancer. "85 percent of all pancreatic cancers are diagnosed late, when someone has less than a two percent chance of survival. And our current test costs $800 per test and misses 30 percent of all pancreatic cancers," he said. He won last year's Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. The sweet validation came with $100,000 in scholarships, but Jack Andraka's got his eye on even bigger things. "The name of the competition is called the Tricorder XPRIZE," he said. "It's a $10 million prize. Essentially what you have to do is develop something the size of a smartphone that you scan over your skin and it will diagnose any disease instantly." Jack is fielding a team of other high-schoolers to compete against 300 teams of adult scientists and corporations in the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE competition. He says youth is an advantage -- that new eyes are more likely to solve old problems.

Cancer cure trials move from mice to men

In a major breakthrough in the search for a cure for cancer, the first human trials are to begin using a technique that has already been shown to destroy the disease in mice. The trials are the culmination of years of research prompted by the discovery of a cancer-proof mouse by researchers almost a decade ago. More than 20 cancer patients will be given white blood cells with cancer-killing properties in an attempt to boost their immune system's fight against the deadly illness. The work stems from experiments into the metabolism of a humble laboratory mouse whose immunity to cancer defied the repeated attempts of scientists to kill it with high-level doses of cancer cells. White blood cells taken from the animal and its offspring were subsequently used to cure other mice of advanced cancers. The white blood cells destroyed the cancer cells but left normal cells alone. This discovery encouraged scientists to study how people might be helped to fight off cancer by being given a boost of white blood cells called granulocytes. Laboratory tests have since shown how human granulocytes can destroy cervical, prostate and breast cancer cells, provided sufficient numbers of cancer-killing granulocytes from healthy donors are used. Scientists are now confident that the treatment will prove just as successful in humans as it has been in mice. Hundreds of donors will be recruited for the new treatment – which is called leukocyte infusion therapy – and a process similar to platelet donation will be used to collect the granulocytes.

Injected Cells Cure Tumors in Mice

White blood cells from mice that are naturally immune to cancer cured tumors in other mice and provided them with lifelong immunity to the disease, researchers reported Monday. The finding indicates the existence of a biological pathway previously unsuspected in any species. A small team of researchers is working to understand the genetic and immunological basis of the surprising phenomenon. Preliminary studies hint at the existence of a similar resistance in humans. Researchers hope that harnessing the biological process could lead to a new approach to treating cancer. But Dr. Zhen Cui of Wake Forest, whose team published the findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, said he expected rapid replication of the results because the findings were so clear-cut and easily observed. "This is a truly remarkable phenomenon -- and it really needs confirmation from other institutions," he said. The team took white blood cells from the immune mice ... and injected them into mice already carrying a variety of tumors, some of which were extremely aggressive. In every case, the cancers were destroyed, even if the cells were injected at a point distant from the tumor. Healthy tissues were not affected. The mice that received the cells, furthermore, were protected from new tumors for the rest of their lives. The researchers have no idea how the immunity continues.

New Cancer Foe Hailed

Germs that cause cancer have been discovered and with a new high-frequency radio "ray." They have been killed in human patients who then recovered, according to assertions made yesterday at the California State Homeopathic Medical society’s convention. The new progress in combating malignant cancer is said to have been made possible by an ultra microscope that magnifies 31,000 times and by a ray that kills micro-organisms in humans. Both the microscope and the Ray were developed by Royal Raymond Rife of San Diego. Rife was to have announced his discoveries before the British Medical Society, but made the announcement locally because of the war. Dr. Arthur W. Yale of San Diego reported that with the aid of the Rife Ray he has succeeded in curing a number of cases of malignant cancer in which patients had been told they had only a limited time in which to live. The physician [said that] "for 17 years Mr. Rife experimented with vibratory waves of all frequencies, and he has now succeeded in finding a rate that will kill the different invading organisms of the body. Radio waves, which with their harmonics range from 10 meters to 20,000 meters, are projected through a tube filled with helium gas. I have witnessed the disappearance of every malignant growth when the patient has remained under treatment." Dr. Yale then reported case histories of patients treated. Mr. Rife alluded to the fact that the medical profession has not yet accepted his findings. “My work may not be accepted during my lifetime," he said, "but ... I know it ultimately will be recognized.

In Tests, Vitamin D Shrinks Breast Cancer Cells

Doctors have known that low levels of vitamin D are linked to certain kinds of cancers as well as to diabetes and asthma, but new research also shows that the vitamin can kill human cancer cells. The results fall short of an immediate cancer cure, but they are encouraging, medical professionals say. JoEllen Welsh, a researcher with the State University of New York at Albany, has studied the effects of vitamin D for 25 years. Part of her research involves taking human breast cancer cells and treating them with a potent form of vitamin D. Within a few days, half the cancer cells shriveled up and died. Welsh said the vitamin has the same effect as a drug used for breast cancer treatment. "Vitamin D enters the cells and triggers the cell death process," she [said]. "It's similar to what we see when we treat cells with Tamoxifen," a drug used to treat breast cancer. The vitamin's effects were even more dramatic on breast cancer cells injected into mice. After several weeks of treatment, the cancer tumors in the mice shrank by an average of more than 50 percent. Some tumors disappeared. Similar results have been achieved on colon and prostate cancer tumors in mice.

Smoking Marijuana Regularly May Reduce Risk of Some Neck, Head Cancers

In a study, researchers have found that long-term pot smokers were roughly 62 percent less likely to develop head and neck cancers than people who did not smoke pot. The new study featured 434 patients with head and neck cancers, which include tumors in the mouth, tongue, nose, sinuses, throat and lymph nodes in the neck, and 547 individuals without these cancers seen in the Greater Boston area from December 1999 to December 2003. After factoring out the impact of smoking, drinking, and other factors that might influence the results, smoking marijuana from once every two weeks to three times every two weeks, on average, was associated with about half the risk of head and neck cancer, compared with less frequent use. Those who took up pot smoking at an older age appeared to have less risk of these cancers than those who started it at a younger age. Compared to people who never smoked pot, those who began smoking marijuana between the ages of 15 and 19 years were 47 percent less likely to develop head and neck cancer, while users who began at age 20 or older had a 61 percent reduced risk, Kelsey and colleagues found. The authors note that chemicals in pot called cannabinoids have been shown to have potential antitumor effects. Other studies have linked marijuana use to a reduced risk of some cancers, such as cancer of the prostate, and now head and neck cancer. It's also been suggested that smoking pot may help stave off Alzheimer's disease and help combat weight loss associated with AIDS, and nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy in cancer patients.

Nanotubes seen as new weapon in cancer fight

In what a dying Rick Smalley called the most important application from his Nobel Prize-winning discovery [of fullerines], Houston researchers are using [carbon] nanotubes heated by radio waves to kill cancer cells. In a paper posted online by the journal Cancer, a team at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Rice University reported that the technique destroyed liver cancer tumors in rabbits and caused no side effects. It is thought to hold the same potential for many other cancers. "I don't want to overstate matters — I'm the biggest skeptic in the world — given the challenges still ahead of us," Dr. Steven Curley, an M.D. Anderson surgical oncologist and the paper's senior author, said Thursday. "But my hope is that this will be a very useful tool to safely and efficiently treat a lot of types of cancer." The therapy marries two disparate disciplines: the relatively ancient field of radio waves and nanotechnology, the cutting-edge science of the ultra-small. The rabbit study found the therapy worked only when the two were used together. It works not by poisoning but by creating a localized hyperthermia — or small fever — that destroys the cancer cells' membranes, protein and even DNA. The cells then die and are carried out of the body through normal kidney functions. In the experiment recounted in Cancer, the rabbits were injected with a solution of single-walled carbon nanotubes — hollow cylinders of pure carbon measuring about a billionth of a meter across — then exposed to two minutes of radio-frequency treatment. The result, researchers said, was the thermal destruction of 100 percent of the tumors. The idea was inspired by John Kanzius, an M.D. Anderson leukemia patient and retired Pennsylvania radio and television station owner. He developed a radio-frequency generator after undergoing chemotherapy and noting its effect on himself and other patients.

Vitamin C: Cancer cure?

Government nutrition researcher [Dr. Mark Levine] has published new evidence that suggests vitamin C can work like chemotherapy - only better. But so far, he hasn't been able to interest cancer experts in conducting the kind of conclusive studies that, one way or the other, would advance treatment. "If vitamin C is useful in cancer treatment, that's wonderful. If it's not, or if it's harmful, that's fine, too," said Levine, a Harvard-educated physician at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. The distinction between oral and intravenous is crucial. The body automatically gets rid of extra C through urine. Levine's lab has shown that, at high concentrations, the vitamin is toxic to many types of cancer cells in lab dishes. But to get that much C into the body before it's eliminated, it must be put directly into the blood. Five out of nine types of cancer cells that were put in simulated body-cavity fluid died when concentrated ascorbate or peroxide was added to the dish. And the best part: This same lethal marinade had no effect on healthy cells. "Interest is definitely growing," said Kenneth Bock, physician and president of the American College for Advancement in Medicine, an alternative-medicine society that teaches ascorbate infusion protocols. The American Cancer Society and the American Association of Clinical Oncologists warn patients against high-dose C, as do leading cancer centers such as the University of Pennsylvania's and Memorial Sloan-Kettering.

Scientists Seek to Rein In Diagnoses of Cancer

A group of experts advising the nation’s premier cancer research institution has recommended changing the definition of cancer and eliminating the word from some common diagnoses as part of sweeping changes in the nation’s approach to cancer detection and treatment. The recommendations, from a working group of the National Cancer Institute, were published [in] The Journal of the American Medical Association. They say, for instance, that some premalignant conditions, like one that affects the breast called ductal carcinoma in situ, which many doctors agree is not cancer, should be renamed to exclude the word carcinoma so that patients are less frightened and less likely to seek what may be unneeded and potentially harmful treatments that can include the surgical removal of the breast. The group, which includes some of the top scientists in cancer research, also suggested that many lesions detected during breast, prostate, thyroid, lung and other cancer screenings should not be called cancer at all but should instead be reclassified as IDLE conditions, which stands for “indolent lesions of epithelial origin.” The impetus behind the call for change is a growing concern among doctors, scientists and patient advocates that hundreds of thousands of men and women are undergoing needless and sometimes disfiguring and harmful treatments for premalignant and cancerous lesions that are so slow growing they are unlikely to ever cause harm. Once doctors and patients are aware a lesion exists, they typically feel compelled to biopsy, treat and remove it, often at great physical and psychological pain and risk to the patient.

Pot compound seen as tool against cancer

Marijuana, already shown to reduce pain and nausea in cancer patients, may be promising as a cancer-fighting agent against some of the most aggressive forms of the disease. A growing body of early research shows a compound found in marijuana - one that does not produce the plant's psychotropic high - seems to have the ability to "turn off" the activity of a gene responsible for metastasis in breast and other types of cancers. Two scientists at San Francisco's California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute first released data five years ago that showed how this compound - called cannabidiol - reduced the aggressiveness of human breast cancer cells in the lab. "The preclinical trial data is very strong, and there's no toxicity. There's really a lot of research to move ahead with and to get people excited," said Sean McAllister, who along with scientist Pierre Desprez, has been studying the active molecules in marijuana - called cannabinoids - as potent inhibitors of metastatic disease for the past decade. Martin Lee, director of Project CBD, [a] group that works to raise awareness of the scientific promise of the compound, described the cannabidiol research as potent both as a medicine and a myth buster. "It debunks the idea that medicinal marijuana is really about people wanting to get stoned," said Lee, author of Smoke Signals, a book published last month about the medical and social history of marijuana. "Why do they want it when it doesn't even get them high?"

A team of Spanish scientists led by Manuel Guzman conducted the first clinical trial assessing the antitumoral action of THC on human beings. THC treatment was associated with significantly reduced tumor cell proliferation in every test subject. Harvard University scientists reported that THC slows tumor growth in common lung cancer and “significantly reduces the ability of the cancer to spread.” What’s more ... THC selectively targets and destroys tumor cells while leaving healthy cells unscathed. Conventional chemotherapy drugs, by contrast, are highly toxic; they indiscriminately damage the brain and body. A Single Antibody to Treat Multiple Cancers?

A single treatment to cure all cancers? Scientists may be one step closer. In a recent study, scientists reported that they successfully tested an antibody treatment that shrank human breast, ovary, colon, bladder, brain, liver and prostate tumors transplanted into mice. The antibody blocks a protein called CD47, which normally sits on the cell surface and issues a “don’t eat me” signal that prevents the body’s immune system from attacking it. About a decade ago, scientists at Stanford University School of Medicine, led by professor of pathology Irving Weissman, discovered that using an antibody to block CD47 cured some cases of leukemia and lymphoma in mice by allowing macrophages to seek and destroy the cancerous cells. In the new study, Weissman’s Stanford team showed that the CD47-blocking antibodies may also work against a number of other cancers. The researchers found that CD47 existed on nearly every cell, which suggests that the protein may be common to all cancers. Cancer cells expressed about three times more CD47 than healthy cells. “If the tumor was highly aggressive, the antibody also blocked metastasis. It’s becoming very clear that, in order for a cancer to survive in the body, it has to find some way to evade the cells of the innate immune system,” said Weissman in a statement. The antibody treatment didn’t work in all cases. Some mice injected with breast cancer cells from a human patient showed no changes after treatment. Yet in five mice with breast cancer, the antibody treatment cured them, with no signs of recurrence four months after treatment.

Calif. HS student devises possible cancer cure

Born to Chinese immigrants, 17-year-old Angela Zhang of Cupertino, California is a typical American teenager. She's really into shoes and is just learning how to drive. But there is one thing that separates her from every other student at Monta Vista High School, something she first shared with her chemistry teacher, Kavita Gupta. It's a research paper Angela wrote in her spare time -- and it is advanced, to say the least. "Cure for cancer -- a high school student," said Gupta. "It's just so mind-boggling. I just cannot even begin to comprehend how she even thought about it or did this." When she was a freshman, she started reading doctorate level papers on bio-engineering. By sophomore year she'd talked her way into the lab at Stanford, and by junior year was doing her own research. Angela's idea was to mix cancer medicine in a polymer that would attach to nanoparticles -- nanoparticles that would then attach to cancer cells and show up on an MRI, so doctors could see exactly where the tumors are. Then she thought [of aiming] an infrared light at the tumors to melt the polymer and release the medicine, thus killing the cancer cells while leaving healthy cells completely unharmed. It'll take years to know if it works in humans -- but in mice -- the tumors almost completely disappeared. Angela recently entered her project in the national Siemens science contest. It was no contest. She got a check for $100,000.

Cuba Announces Release of the World's First Lung Cancer Vaccine

From the island nation known for the quality of its cigars comes some pretty big news today: Cuban medical authorities have released the first therapeutic vaccine for lung cancer. CimaVax-EGF is the result of a 25-year research project at Havana’s Center for Molecular Immunology, and it could make a life or death difference for those facing late-stage lung cancers. CimaVax-EGF isn’t a vaccine in the preventative sense--that is, it doesn’t prevent lung cancer from taking hold in new patients. It’s based on a protein related to uncontrolled cell proliferation--that is, it doesn’t prevent cancer from existing in the first place but attacks the mechanism by which it does harm. As such it can turn aggressive later-stage lung cancer into a manageable chronic disease by creating antibodies that do battle with the proteins that cause uncontrolled cell proliferation, researchers say. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are still recommended as a primary means of destroying cancerous tissue, but for those showing no improvement the new vaccine could be a literal lifesaver. The vaccine has already been tested in 1,000 patients in Cuba and is being distributed at hospitals there free of charge. That’s a big deal for a country where smoking is part of the national culture and a leading cause of death. If it proves as successful as researchers say it is, it should give those suffering from lung cancer reason to celebrate--just not with a Cohiba.

'Anti-cancer virus' shows promise

An engineered virus, injected into the blood, can selectively target cancer cells throughout the body in what researchers have labelled a medical first. The virus attacked only tumours, leaving the healthy tissue alone, in a small trial on 23 patients, according to the journal Nature. Researchers said the findings could one day "truly transform" therapies. Cancer specialists said using viruses showed "real promise". Using viruses to attack cancers is not a new concept, but they have needed to be injected directly into tumours in order to evade the immune system. The virus, named JX-594 ... was injected at different doses into the blood of 23 patients with cancers which had spread to multiple organs in the body. Prof John Bell, lead researcher and from the University of Ottawa, said: "We are very excited because this is the first time in medical history that a viral therapy has been shown to consistently and selectively replicate in cancer tissue after intravenous infusion in humans. Intravenous delivery is crucial for cancer treatment because it allows us to target tumours throughout the body as opposed to just those that we can directly inject."
