Unbelievable display of tyranny.
Six-year-old schoolboy suspended for having Mini Cheddars in his lunchbox has now been expelled
A six-year-old boy suspended for having a packet of Mini Cheddars in his lunchbox has now been expelled from school.
Riley Pearson was suspended for four days last Wednesday from Colnbrook CofE Primary School in Berkshire, after teachers found the packet of snacks in his lunchbox.
He had been due to return to school on Tuesday, but his parents say that both Riley and his four-year-old brother have now been permanently excluded because of the row over what he eats for lunch.
Tom Pearson, Riley's father, said: "We should have had a meeting to get Riley back into school at 9am [on Tuesday], myself and my father arrived on time and we were told that the meeting cannot take place," according to the Slough and South Bucks Observer.
"At lunchtime on the same day I had a call from the school saying that we [the school] have given Riley permanent exclusion and his four-year-old brother's place in nursery has been withdrawn."
The school, near Slough, had recently sent a letter to parents saying that from January 14 packed lunches should be "healthy and balanced".
Parents were told: "Chocolate, sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks are not allowed. If your child's lunchbox is unhealthy and unbalanced they will be provided with a school lunch for which you will be charged."
Riley's parents met the head teacher Jeremy Meek last week, who told them that they had been “continuously breaking school rules” .
Mr Meek denied that the boys had been expelled only because of the contents of Riley's lunchbox.
In a statement the school said a pupil had been permanently excluded because "during the course of a recent four day exclusion, the pupil’s parents made it publicly clear that their child would not be following the school's policy on healthy eating upon their return".
It also said the decision was taken because of "the parent school relationship suffering an irretrievable breakdown that would have put [the] two pupils in an unacceptable position".
The school said: "This breakdown was due to misrepresentations in the local and national media that were both wholly inaccurate and grossly misleading, abusive language being used towards staff, and other inappropriate actions being taken that were designed to damage the school’s reputation."
Mr Pearson, who lives Colnbrook, said: "He is just six-years-old, all he does is take his lunchbox to school, it's us who puts the food into his lunchbox.
"We as a family believe that Riley is taking a well balanced lunch to school and that no rules have been broken. "
Riley's mother, Natalie Mardle, said his lunch usually consists of a sandwich, yoghurt tube, Dairylea Dunkers cheese spread snack, a packet of Mini Cheddars, and water.
She said Rily eats healthy, well-balanced meals at home, according to the Daily Mail.
According to government guidelines, school meals must be balanced and have fruit, vegetables, bread, cereal and meat, poultry or oily fish. Fizzy drinks, crisps, chocolate or sweets in school meals are ruled out.

Hello Everyone:
This is probably the best article I have read for along time! If it wasn't so serious I would be laughing until I couldn't laugh anymore!
This is why I would be laughing so hard....
At the start of each year my kids get a letter from their schools explaining to us as parents that we should make healthy lunches for our kids. The lunches are not to have lots of candy, cakes etc. Only healthy foods.
Each year we do the same which is make very healthy meals for our kids. Each year the schools have candies for finishing reading. Cake for being teachers helper. Icecream for raising the most money for the school. The list goes on and on and on.....
I think that the school system(s) want to make sure that they are the only ones that can give candy and treats to the kids. This way the kids look up to the school and teachers more than the parents!
Since being in the school system for along time now it has become apparent that not only governments want everyone to follow the party line but schools want kids and parents to follow the party line as well!
The only way that this is going to happen is when everyone wakes up because from my side of the fence I was the only one speaking up at the schools my kids go to and everyone else including other parents were drawing me as the trouble maker. ( If I am a trouble maker for speaking out then so be it )
I say to the parents and kids....each what you want because you only live once! Remember the only things that taste GREAT are the things that are supposedly bad for you!
The public school system is very, very over rated! With only 907 hours per year a teacher has to supposedly teach the kids aren't learning much anyway! There are alot of better alternative to learing such as "home schooling"

And don't forget the bake sales organized by the parents' committee for fundraising purposes. Mothers send in the kind of stuff they know the kids will eat! The goodies quite frequently don't qualify as 100% healthy. :hungry:

have the kids prepare their own breakfast or the own lunch everyday at school. They will learn very fast to eat healthy and will enjoy it. THey could also enjoy chores reponsibilities while cleaning the dishes and brooming the floor afterwards. Return to real schooling, about life, joy, and duties.
So new stove, cooking ware, for all school in the country. As it was for girls when my mother was raised.
And the school does not buy any of the Junk stuff, simple. Parents will be happy not to have to make lunches anymore. They woud even accept their kid to start school 1/2 hour earlier in order to cook. I certainly would like it.
Now, my daughter is coming back from a fake school in 1/2 hour. She will prepare her own snack.

Now, what is better, having the nutrition education in order to imporve one's habits or imposing some food laws to everyone?

I agree with you Flash. Except, this thread is not about nutrition. this is a matter of and adult human being losing the right over their child in regards to food. Yes, many people can and do the nutritious choices. For what ever reason, thiat child had some junk food chips. SO EFFIN WHAT. There are kids smoking pot and having sex in the school bathrooms where my child attends. They too are taking away the food choice. Healthier food? Who cares. take the funds and monitor the bathrooms where drug use is taking place. This really has been taken too far. But hey, I don't hear parades of parents picketing that school.
If I was the parent of that child, I would round up all the parents and start a protest or better yet a strike.

I understood Sydney. The whole story is a show of how ridiculous dictatorship gets. Even in your food. I do think that America mainly makes terrible choices for food. However, there is a large margin between education and food dictatorship. Schools are supposed to education, give information better than what can be found in the internet, and moslty, educate by transmitting correct values.
Right now, it is transmitting only the dictatorship values, on which all other parents agreed. Here is the real culprit. If school were for education, the schoolboards would not mind inversting in cooking abilities for all the students if parents are sending their kids with empty stomack or too much gatorade at school. It is obviously not the case.
- gatorade and energy drinks have been forbidden at my daughter school, too many children were hyperactive on it, would not eat and would get violent when drinking it too much or when in withdrawal from it. Once again communities and parents not taking their own reponsibilites and being imposed consequently.
- although I see very well that cheddar crisp are not really dameageable when compared with gatorade and that overall these parents were fine.
The whole process has to be community wide. Parents sending good food of having collective kithchen in which the kids participate, at school. We have to stop blaming others. Dictatorship begins where people let go of their soverignty. I read that in that town, nobody contested, therefore they let go of their sovereirngly.
This is what I was trying to impart.

Yeah food choices have little to do with this matter. Non-compliant parents are the issue and you don't want to be the kid with crazy parents.
I feel bad for the kid. Hang in there little buddy.

My daughter has a crazy mother and by now she is starting to enjoy it, even count on it. lol
Kids love to see their parents defent them, .... well, in the long run. And yes, it is not a food issue, it is a disguised Under a food pretext. This is obvious. On the other hand, the whole community should have supported these parents. One of the solution could have been to corner the schoolboard by asking millions for implementing kitchens in schools. you see, coming from the parents.

I think this school has principles and integrity, they wish to give the kids the best possible chance. The parents signed up for those principles- they breached the contract - simple go some place else. The boys have learned a great life lesson through their folks -if they behave in a dishonest way there are consequences.
Why should the other kids be tormented by the cheesy wotsits, they have learned that crime doesn't pay. LMAO

I respectfully agree to disagree Sheme, I am sure the kids got a lesson from this, but it will be spun at home to be the schools fault. It's great to have guidelines that everyone agrees to, but flexibility needs to be at its core, especially when dealing with busy parents, this seems extremely heavy handed to me, suspension for four days, then expulsion because the parents were understandably up in arms about this, very bloody extreme. Presumably the school were unable to either compromise or educate their message, my vote is a thumbs down for the schools lack of imagination, not a place I would like to send my little devils, that's for sure... Nasu respect for your opinion, but I stand by my decision on this with the story provided. This is what I appreciate about PA people with opposite views having civilized debate.
I repeat the parents knew what the rules where - they chose to ignore the contract- they behaved in a totally selfish way by ignoring the impact of their children being made an exception to the rules at the expense of the rest of the complying children.
It's like saying 'the rule is we don't kill', the society agrees. One person says they must kill therefore they should be allowed to kill and they will kill.
Now put the words brain cells after the kill word and you get my drift.

Good call. You know I respect you, I hope that is not in doubt.. I must admit I don't know the whole story as you clearly do, I don't live in England, but hold Wye shire folk especially, in high regard, probably something to do with your cider.. As you say it, you make a good case, if that is how it went down, but even so, it seems very heavy handed to me. After a moment thinking about your thoughts, I must conclude that there was much more to this story than the supposed reason for the child's dismissal. A good kid, with well meaning parents should not be punished like this, not for this reason alone, IMO.
Perhaps his parents were a complete nightmare and this the final straw, I trust your good judgement... N

I also wanted to add, this is a 6 year old boy. Anybody who has had a child or two or ten, knows, that children go through some stages where they try to display their own power. So lets say theoretically, this 6 year old, LOVES cheddar crisps, and had a tantrum demanding them with his lunch, and his mother or father, probably in a rush to get to work so they can continue to put whatever food on the table that they can afford. I mean, lets face it. times are tough. Chips are much cheaper than apples. Not everyone can afford healthy food. I am sorry that this is the reality we live in. I have a child, and I know what food costs. And lucky for me, my child prefers to eat healthy over cheap, BUT, when she was 6, let me tell you, between gramma spoiling her with cookies and the like, (junk), it was not always easy to get her to eat what I wanted her to eat.
I think it is good that schools have guidelines for the food. But when the school is not paying for the food, it is none of their damn business what that child puts in his mouth. Because, I have seen first hand, the schools are the ones that serve sugar and soda as a reward for things. its disgusting, and an even more disgusting display of hypocracy. I think they are simply conditioning the public to accept that our children belong to them, and not the parents. And IMO, this is a very troubling sign of what may come in the near future.

I think those parents should come to the US and start a potato chip company.
They could tell their story for the starting money and live comfortably and unmolested at the expense of stupider people,
instead of having to live by the rules of stupider people.
:( lol
