View Full Version : Guagua Pichincha - Ecuador - Volcano seismic activity status
Guagua Pichincha volcano very close to the city of Quito, Ecuador is starting to show signs of seismic activity right after the other two active volcanoes in Ecuador, Reventador to the north-northeast, and Tungurahua to the south very rapidly showed diminished activity.
Earlier in the month of February, Tungurahua created a spectacular display of eruption, ash, pyroclastic flow, and SO2 emission. Reventador (north of Tungurahua) started increasing activity as Tungurahua's magma channels switch, then diminished suddenly.
As Reventador's activity (to the N-NE of Guagua Pichincha) suddenly diminished, this volcano to the west started to show seismic signs, possibly indicating an awakening and activity.
This volcano should be watched closely considering the proximity to Quito.

(above seismic activity from yesterday, the sensor network in Ecuador was off-line yesterday evening and didn't come back online until about 0100 AM local time). Rumbling was indicated showing magma was moving at the volcano deep underground.
Below are today's seismic activity. Any larger longer duration peaks (for several seconds) are indicative of magma activity.

(see above) - Events started showing up about 1020 AM local time, and continued every hour for 3-5 minute bursts.
Guagua Pichincha is one of Ecuador's most active volcanoes.
The stratovolcano is part of a complex that rises immediately west of the capital Quito, at only 8 km distance from the city center. 3 major explosive eruptions have occurred at Guagua Pichincha in the past 2000 years, the most recent one in 1660. An event of similar size today is a major threat to the ca. 2 million city of Quito.
http://chanlo.com/images/volcanoes-1-ecuador.jpg
The volcano and the older extinct Rucu Pichincha stratovolcano form a broad volcanic massif 23 km in diameter. Historical activity of the volcano has included large explosive eruptions some of which produced sub-plinian and plinian eruption columns, lava domes.
Guagua Pichincha volcano's eruptions frequently produce dangerous pyroclastic flows.
Following a 100 year long interval of being dormant, Guagua Pichincha volcano has entered a new phase of low seismic, phreatic and magmatic activity in 1981.
Background:
(from Smithsonian / GVP volcano information)
A lava dome is located at the head of a 6-km-wide breached caldera that formed during a late-Pleistocene slope failure of Guagua Pichincha about 50,000 years ago.
Subsequent late-Pleistocene and Holocene eruptions from the central vent in the breached caldera consisted of explosive activity with pyroclastic flows accompanied by periodic growth and destruction of the central lava dome. Many minor eruptions have occurred since the beginning of the Spanish era at Guagua Pichincha, which is one of Ecuador's most active volcanoes.
The largest historical eruption took place in 1660, when ash fell over a 1000 km radius, accumulating to 30 cm depth in Quito. Pyroclastic flows and surges also occurred, primarily to the west, and affected agricultural activity, causing great economic losses.
Plinian eruptions from Guagua Pichincha
Over the past 2000 years, 3 Plinian eruptions happened at the Guagua Pichincha volcano, in the 1st century AD, in the 10th century, and in AD 1660. The eruptions produced plinian eruption columns of 25-30 km height and left well-defined fallout pumice layers covering the upper slopes of the volcano. The 10th century eruption was the largest, with a VEI of 5.
(C. Robin et al. (2008) "Late Holocene phases of dome growth and Plinian activity at Guagua Pichincha volcano (Ecuador)", Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 176, pp. 7–15)
2008 eruptions
7 phreatic eruptions occurred at Guagua Pichincha Volcano on 1 February 2008. The eruptions were preceded by a magnitude 4.1 earthquake on 6 December 2007.
2003 possible eruption
On 17 April 2003, seismic signals were detected that could have accompanied a minor eruption at Guagua Pichincha, but there was no visual confirmation that an eruption happened.
2002 eruption
On 11 October 2002, 4 phreatic eruptions occurred after several days of heavy rainfall. The eruptions ejected blocks 100-200 m from the vent. Long-period and volcano-tectonic earthquakes and continuous background tremor were recorded until 17 October.
(Source: GVP monthly volcano activity reports)
2001 eruption - lava dome growth and ash explosions
Guagua Pichincha's activity in early 2001 consisted principally of gradual lava dome growth. There were ash eruptions on 18, 31 March, and 25 May 2001. The explosion on 25 May produced a ash cloud reaching an altitude of 8.5 km. On 26 November 2001, seismic signals indicated a 20 minute-long phreatic explosion around noon, followed by 16 hours of continuous tremor.
2000 eruptions
During 2000, Guagua Pichincha produced a series of mostly minor ash explosions. A partial collapse of its lava dome which grew in December 199 and January ("dome 8") occurred on 12 July.
1997 phreatic eruptions
During March-October 1997, Guagua Pichincha produced a series of phreatic explosions. The eruptions occurred without any precursory warning signal. Their intensity peaked in May 1997 and the last one was recorded on 18 October 1997. This activity resembled phreatic explosions that occurred in 1981, 1990, and 1993.
1993 eruptions and fatalities
A phreatic explosion at 11h46 local time on 12 March 1993 from Guagua Pichincha's central dome killed 2 young volcanologists. A warning of possible activity had been transmitted to them by radio at 10h30, but for unknown reasons they were still on the lava dome when the eruption occurred.
(source: GVP monthly volcanic activity reports)
1981 reawakening after 100 years of slumber
New activity started in 1981 with phreatic ash explosions and an increase in fumarole activity. This was the first activity after about 100 years of dormancy and started a new cycle of activity.

Guagua Pichincha volcano's activity calmed down today 6 March 2014 as far as eruption potential..
As the regional magma activity surges moved back to Tungurahua and Reventador, activity here started to calm down as far as eruptive activity, however a continual "bubbling" is showing up in the seismic traces, a "rumbling" is present.

GuaGua Pichincha tracked today the events at CotoPaxi, Reventador and Tungurahua, the 1900 hour local event - this is very significant showing a tie-in of the magma plumbing system across the plates that apparently are moving and active in the Northern Andes. I may take a look at the Mexican and Colombian volcanoes, and those in Central America - considering the quakes OFF Ecuador, Off Mexico, Off California in the recent days, we may be seeing a pre-event of major proportions across numbers of active regions in this side of the "Ring of Fire"

http://correo.igepn.edu.ec/heli/heli/GGP_SHZ_EC_--.2014031612.gif
The event at 1012 am local 16 March 14 at GuaGua Pichincha volcano appears to have preceded the 1027 am local time events at both CotoPaxi and Tungurahua volcanoes. The amplitude is stronger at GuaGua Pichincha, possibly indicating that the magma activity was coming from the north north west. There have been quakes both off the coast as well as in the southern most parts of the Peru/Ecuador border region over in Peru, showing deep movements are happening.

G. Pichincha continues to exhibit odd seismic outburst events, not necessarily eruptive throughout the night and day - these oddities started up on the 20th and have continued on and off, with periods of magmatic signature activity. During the morning starting at about 0830 local time, small events were noted. This will be checked against the graphics of Reventador, CotoPaxi and Tungurahua volcanoes to see if there is any synchronic tracking (common deep magma river driving of the volcanic systems).

GuaGua Pichincha - volcano - Ecuador, near Quito - seismic and volcanic activity - 28 March 14
Strange spike patterns stopped during the nite around 2200.
However, and this is where it gets really weird... after a small event shortly before 0800, strange periodic "rocking like" oscillations started to happen with varying speeds.. near 0900 am.
9 cycles per minute were present, 22 cycles per minute were present, 45 cycles per minute were present... AND it continued for hours finally stopping after 1100.. During the 9-11 time window, there were two events which resembled large rock slides. We could be seeing sustained fluid movement down the mountain side, lahars? possibly? Were the continual spikes we had been seeing since the 20th related to rocks slipping, fracturing?

Throughout the evening and into the early morning the volcano continues to exhibit the odd spikey activity on the seismic pickups, with some slides between 0600 - 0700.
Then it was very quiet for an hour until 0800..
http://correo.igepn.edu.ec/heli/heli/GGP_SHZ_EC_--.2014032912.gif
About 0815 sharp events started, and picked up shortly before 0900. About 0920 the strange oscillation of the ground started about 6 cycles movement per minute, doubling to 12 cycles per minute (within the next minute), and in a few minutes was up to a regular oscillation of up to 30 times per minute.
Interspersed between these oscillations of slow and fast waves, were large rockslide-like signals indicating something very big is moving, sliding over a period of about a minute at a time. The oscillation has stopped at about 1100 showing a total period for this "event sequence" of about 2 hours. The "rock events" continue separated by about a 10 minute "calm" period.

Gua Gua Pichincha - volcano Ecuador - Seismic and Volcanic Activity - 1 April 2014
There was a server outage until 2200 last nite, however after the connection was restored, it was noted that there was a small event about 2345 pm, not a rock slide.. Afterwards and into the morning between 0700 and 0800 there was a series of spiking happening, very brief short bursts, similar to the CotoPaxi volcano.
We are waiting on a potential CME reaching the earth from an event from Saturday (x-ray flare), which supposedly will glance, or hit starting about 11:30ish pm 1 April and continuing through the 2nd April.. If that happens, there may be increased activity, and we will note it one way or another..
Near midnite there was a series of long sustained activity which continued on and off throughtout the early morning hours.
After 1000 am local time through about 1100 there was various bouts of slow oscillation activity, 5-6 cycles per minute and increasing up to about 30 oscillations per minute.. It is amazing to watch this shaking on the graphs

GuaGua Pichincha - volcano Ecuador - seismic activity - 2 April 14
The volcano has been acting quite differently since the Chilean 8.2 quake of 1 April. There are a lot less strange spikes coming from the seismographs, no major rock slides are showing up. There was some tilt activity, of a very slow rate starting at about 1105 local time.

GuaGua Pichincha - volcano Ecuador - seismic activity - 3 April 14
The volcano was quiet throughout the night, until about 0710 in the morning and then a rapid series of vibrations started and increased in amplitude and frequency content until about 0945.
Around 1004 am local a 15 cycle per minute oscillation started, with a 6 cycle per minute "pulse" at the outset - this gradually kept increasing in frequency, up to a 30 cycle per minute oscillation.. until about 1144 am local time, and abruptly stopped.
Shortly after noon there were some large bumps and some more bumps about 1240 pm local. Many long duration spike events started close to 1600 and continued on and off till about 1730 local time.

There remains a higher baseline "noise" on the seismographic channel which could be actual very slight vibration happening with the volcano. The data events, spikes are considerably less than yesterday.

Strong activity last nite showed up shortly before midnite, again at about 0600 am local time for an hour, then consistent slow-waves, then a very rapid constant high frequency wave for 3 hours in duration, (interspersed with slower and faster waves).. As seen in the seismic charts, there continues to be activity on this normally quiet volcano. For over an hour last nite about 2000 hours sliding and shaking was present. Then 4 hours of spikey activity, and some tilting of the ground after midnite. There were two significant events close to 0800 am local time as shown on the graphics.

The volcano exhibited strong high frequency activity starting yesterday evening, that continued until about midnight. Another round of that type of activity happened in the morning and continued till about 1000 local, followed by at least 5 bursts of activity.. It was unknown if such was from deep magma movement or more aftershocks from the Chilean upset earlier in the week.

Spikey activity was diminishing, changing over to bumps and magmatic movement signatures. Rock slides were still showing up briefly, but the general trend appears to be more magmatic than rock slide movement. This could be the result of the change of the magma river channels changing with Reventador, and Tungurahua volcanoes which have been erupting but recently over the last days have been showing a dramatic change in reduced activity. G. Pichincha and CotoPaxi have both shown increased activity during this period.

There was a brief flurry of activity last nite (spikey), before 2200 hours local, then calm. Prior to 0800 am local, there was also another flurry of activity of spikey signals, and then calm. This is radically different from previous days. Where is the magma, where did it move to?

The Geological Institute had said that they anticipate that Tungurahua may start resuming explosive activity as they have been detecting deep magma movement. The question has been how much of the volcanic arc system is tied into each other, and is a massive reservoir feeding the volcanoes in the region (separated about 115 miles apart). There is still heat, there is still magma, but after the April 1st Chilean quake of 8.2 magnitude, seismic patterns and eruptions have changed dramatically, and are continuing to change.
No seismic harmonic tremor was seen in yesterdays or today's graphics as of the writing of this post.
