This morning, an Egyptian court sentenced 529 people to death, a pretty staggering number given that state authorities across the world carried out a total of 682 executions in 2012, according to Amnesty International. The move is a major escalation of the military-led government’s months-long crackdown on Islamists in Egypt. But it is hard to believe that it will actually be carried out.

The defendants, most of them members of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood, are accused of participating in attacks on Christians last August in the southern province of Minya. The riots occurred shortly after authorities forcibly dispersed Muslim Brotherhood protest camps in Cairo on Aug. 14—killing more than 600 supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi, a member of the Brotherhood.

According to eyewitnesses, a march of several hundred Muslim Brotherhood members and others arrived in Minya from a nearby town on Aug. 16. The angry crowd looted and torched nearly 40 churches and damaged 23 more. Several people were killed, among them the deputy commander of the district police station in Minya... link to story (http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_world_/2014/03/24/over_500_muslim_brotherhood_members_sentenced_to_death_what_does_egypt_s.html)

Christians were in Egypt hundreds of years before Islam's Prophet arrived...

I say instead of killing them all, send them to Saudi's extremist retraining center that actually teaches them the truths of other religions instead of the hatred...

Islam and Christianity both have the same papa...

now like the article says, they won't all be killed, but having Christians stepping forward to prevent needless deaths is what we stand for...

Help the brothers to open their eyes, to who are their friends...

I don't think these people will be executed, in some countries in that region these facade death sentences are not uncommon, and the sentence is reduced with incongruous ease on appeal. Some kind of perverted judicial theatre.. Hopefully that will happen here too, if it doesn't then Egypt will lose the best part of it's income pretty quickly I should imagine. Egypt won't want that since poverty topples governments more effectively than most other concerns.

having local headlines showing Christians standing with Muslims looking to stop their penalties, will be worth the pain of losing a few churches...

over 600 already died from this incident, it can be used to bring Egypt together, or shatter it...
