I have friends and relatives there. SHOA (a Navy Institution of Chile) send a Tsunami alert. People is evacuating Iquique city. More Strong earthquakes in the area. I will report any news.
Seismographs Ecuador recorded the Chilean event.
You can see the event recorded up north in ECUADOR ( ! ) on the CotoPaxi volcano seismic recorder and how long it lasts, including the aftershocks going up the Andes..
Here is the graphic and post:

I'm updating the other volcano-seismographs reports on the Ecuadorian volcanoes.. This was BIG and LONG in duration, and went throughout the region.. Possibly ask Bill and Christine if they are OK..

thanks Bill, all the seismometers on the volcanoes in Ecuador way up north of you lit up, posting updates to the threads now - gonna watch the magma flow and aftershocks - most of the volcanoes were very quiet today, too quiet really based on the previous weeks and days trends.. ( i did point out, the "quiet" was very odd )

You can see it is still ringing - the two graphics are here (cotopaxi seismometers)

The magma vent system at Reventador volcano STOPPED its eruption (its documented and you can see that on the Reventador thread (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?68671-Volcanic-Eruption-Ecuador-Reventador-2014&p=817337#post817337)), and could be seen to be exhibiting strange activity hours before all this happened. Possibly a good way to predict what is happening on the ring of fire (the east side at least)..
http://correo.igepn.edu.ec/heli/heli/CONE_SHZ_EC_--.2014040112.gif - this is where you can see Reventador started acting strange - (normally it is in almost constant eruption)

"Volcano Eruption in Peru on Tuesday, 01 April, 2014 at 03:15 (03:15 AM) UTC.
Description
After several months of activity, Ubinas volcano has now erupted. The director of the Geophysical Institute of Arequipa, Orlando Macedo said that the eruption took place at 7:42 a.m. and gave off ash for one thousand meters. The volcano, in the south of Peru became active in September of last year, after having been dormant for several years. Nearby village, Querapi was set to be evacuated. The village is located just five kilometers from the volcano. Macedo said that the villagers were affected by the ash that was emitted from the eruption. September 2013, when Ubinas became active after several years of dormancy, Peru21 reported that authorities were planning to permanently relocate Querapi. The village is located just four kilometers from the volcano. "The wind has blown towards the south, to the residents of Querapi, four kilometers from the crater, and the district of Ubinas, located at six kilometers," said Macedo. The 20 families that lived in Querapi were evacuated to the locality of Ubinas last Saturday. They are waiting for the permanent removal of their village to Pampas de Hawái. Ubinas volcano is considered to be the most active volcano of Peru. Eruptions have been reported since 1550. link (http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/site/index.php?pageid=event_desc&edis_id=VE-20140401-43203-PER)"

Time-lapse video of Ubinas volcano's activity today. A small explosion took place at 12:45 (UTC), ejecting a plume of steam and ash to a few 100 meters height.
Ubinas town mayor Pascual Coaquira said that residents of the town of Ubinas have been distributed masks and goggles, as the building ash content in the air has made it difficult for some to breathe. (source (http://www.webpronews.com/peru-volcano-promps-evacuations-2014-04))
Vulcanologists who are monitoring the volcano have said in the past that the real danger is from ash, which affects animals and people since it permeates the pasturelands and water. This week, specialists at the Peruvian Geophysical Institute, IGP, said there is an increase in magma or molten rock in the crater of the volcano but that there is no danger of a sudden eruption. The lava from this type of volcano is viscous and moves very slowly, cooling and hardening quickly. Here is the United States Geological Survey analysis of the Chilean quake:
The April 1, 2014 M8.2 earthquake in northern Chile occurred as the result of thrust faulting at shallow depths near the Chilean coast. The location and mechanism of the earthquake are consistent with slip on the primary plate boundary interface, or megathrust, between the Nazca and South America plates. At the latitude of the earthquake, the Nazca plate subducts eastward beneath the South America plate at a rate of 65 mm/yr. Subduction along the Peru-Chile Trench to the west of Chile has led to uplift of the Andes mountain range and has produced some of the largest earthquakes in the world, including the 2010 M 8.8 Maule earthquake in central Chile, and the largest earthquake on record, the 1960 M 9.5 earthquake in southern Chile.
The April 1 earthquake occurred in a region of historic seismic quiescence – termed the northern Chile or Iquique seismic gap. Geodetic modeling indicates that the subducting and overriding plates are partially to fully-locked, implying that large earthquake are possible along the plate boundary megathrust. Historical records indicate a M 8.8 earthquake occurred within the Iquique gap in 1877, which was preceded immediately to the north by an M 8.8 earthquake in 1868.
A recent increase in seismicity rates has occurred in the vicinity of the April 1 earthquake. An M6.7 earthquake with similar faulting mechanism occurred on March 16, 2014 and was followed by 60+ earthquake of M4+, and 26 earthquakes of M5+. The March 16 earthquake was also followed by three M6.2 events on March 17, March 22, and March 23. The spatial distribution of seismicity following the March 16 event migrated spatially to the north through time, starting near 20oS and moving to ~19.5oS. The initial location of the April 1 earthquake places the event near the northern end of this seismic sequence. Other recent large plate boundary ruptures bound the possible rupture area of the April 1 event, including the 2001 M 8.4 Peru earthquake adjacent to the south coast of Peru to the north, and the 2007 M 7.7 Tocopilla, Chile and 1995 M 8.1 Antofagasta, Chile earthquakes to the south. Other nearby events along the plate boundary interface include an M 7.4 in 1967 as well as an M 7.7 in 2005 in the deeper portion of the subduction zone beneath onland Chile.

LAT - LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
LON - LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)
TIME - TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.
NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY
ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL
MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS.
EVALUATION
TSUNAMI WAVES THAT CAN BE A HAZARD TO SWIMMERS AND BOATERS AS
WELL AS TO PERSONS NEAR THE SHORE AT BEACHES AND IN HARBORS AND
MARINAS ARE NOW AFFECTING THE STATE OF HAWAII. THIS HAZARD COULD
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THE SITUATION IS BEING MONITORED
CLOSELY AND THE ADVISORY WILL END WHEN THE HAZARD HAS PASSED.
FURTHER MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS
WARRANT UNTIL THE THREAT TO HAWAII HAS PASSED.
Highest Tsunami wave currently reported was for HILO HI, 19.7N 155.1W, at 1438Z, with wave height of 0.58M / 1.9FT and a period of 16MIN
Historic significance:
"Today marks the 68th anniversary of another major tsunami in Hawaii.
"That April 1, 1946 tsunami was generated by an 8.6-magnitude quake in the Aleutian Islands. It caused widespread damage in Hilo and killed 159 people in Hawaii and six in Alaska.
"Other strong earthquakes in Chile included an 8.8 magnitude tremor in 2010 and an 8.5 magnitude temblor in 1922.
"The area off the coast of Chile is one of the most geologically active regions in the world.
"Chile was the location of a 9.5-magnitude earthquake in May 22, 1960 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake) which generated a tsunami that devastated Hilo and killed 61 on the Big Island."
The epicenter of the 9.5 quake was near Lumaco, approximately 570 kilometres (350 mi) south of Santiago, with Valdivia being the most affected city. The tremor caused localised tsunamis that severely battered the Chilean coast, with waves up to 25 metres (82 ft). The main tsunami raced across the Pacific Ocean and devastated Hilo, Hawaii. Waves as high as 10.7 metres (35 ft) were recorded 10,000 kilometres (6,200 mi) from the epicenter, and as far away as Japan and the Philippines.
On 24 May, 38 hours after the main shock of the 1960 Valdivia earthquake, Cordón Caulle began a rhyodacitic fissure eruption. Being located between two sparsely populated and isolated Andean valleys, the eruption had few eyewitnesses and received little attention by local media, which was preoccupied with the severe and widespread damage and losses caused by the earthquake.

Back to the OLD ways -
Human sacrifice
In the coastal village Collileufu, native Lafkenches carried out a ritual human sacrifice during the days following the main earthquake. Collileufu, located in the Budi Lake area, south of Puerto Saavedra, was in 1960 highly isolated. The Mapuche spoke primarily Mapudungun.
The community had gathered in Cerro La Mesa, while the lowlands were struck by successive tsunamis.
Juana Namuncura Añen, a local machi, demanded the sacrifice of the grandson of Juan Painecur, a neighbor, in order to calm the earth and the ocean.
The victim was 5-year-old José Luis Painecur, an "orphan" (huacho) whose mother had gone to work as domestic worker in Santiago and left her son in charge of her father.
The sacrifice was learned about by authorities after a boy in the commune of Nueva Imperial denounced to local leaders the theft of two horses; these were allegedly eaten during the sacrifice ritual.
Two men were charged with the crime of murder and confessed, but later recanted. They were released from jail after 2 years. A judge ruled that those involved had "acted without free will, driven by an irresistible natural force of ancestral tradition."
The story was mentioned in a Time magazine article, although with little detail.
