Italy's bishops have adopted a policy, with backing from the Vatican, that states they are not obliged to inform police officers if they suspect a child has been molested.

The Italian Bishops' Conference said the guidelines published on Friday reflected suggestions from the Vatican's office that handles sex abuse investigations.

Victims have denounced how bishops systematically covered up abuse by moving priests while keeping prosecutors in the dark.

Only in 2010 did the Vatican instruct bishops to report abuse to police — but only where required by law.

Italian guidelines cite a 1985 treaty between the Vatican and Italy stipulating that clergy aren't obliged to tell magistrates about information obtained through their religious ministry. The guidelines remind bishops, however, they have a ''moral duty“ to contribute to the common good.

The ruling comes less than a week after Pope Francis appointed a former child victim as one of the first members of a new commission to help the Catholic Church put an end to clerical sexual abuse.

A UN report published in March blasted what it called the Vatican's code of silence" around abusive priests.

UN children's rights experts estimate "tens of thousands of children worldwide" have been sexually abused by predatory clerics as a result of moving, rather than reporting, paedophiles.

Sex crimes are so rough to deal with on so many levels. There are so many diffrent kinds of offenses and yet they all get put under the same tag. A misdermeaner sex offense can suffer the same diffulties as a felony sex offender even though the diffrences could be as much as stealing a pack of gum vs armed bank robbery. Thats not to say there are not horrible people out there who have done and might do again horrible sex crimes but it is a tough set of offences simply because it covers so broad a topic.

Yeah lets see them smile in hell. I honestly wonder what all the smiling is about. Knowing that your going to hell is not funny in any way. Just astounds me - genuinely.

I saw some chalk on the sidewalk in Walla Walla last night, it said something like 54-56% of sex crimes are not reported to police.

Interesting timing for this story.

Had to post a quick comment. People who are following my current Child Abuse Whistleblower journey will know that I am yet to go before the current Australian Royal Commission Into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse - as I have a matter that is currently before the Australian Federal Court of Human Rights with me as the Applicant as a Mandatory Reporter (legal voice of the Child) - I will not discuss the evidence but please know this - I have evidence that pertains to the Catholic Church and Child Abuse that will not be ignored. I have correspondence and emails that cannot be ignored.

On a personal note - the topic of the opening post - it appears the Catholic Church are in survival mode, they are trying to protect themselves and it appears they have lost all their senses. The policy they are trying to install - all I will say is this - they have not got a chance that any self respecting person will support them. What they appear to be doing is trying to side step the issue - they have been trying to do that for a long time haven't they????

Much Peace - Amanda

Amanda I hope you right and the perpetrators are brought to justice. Good look on your journey, you sound like a very strong and determined character, don't let anything change that.

I just had an interesting thought... For these crimes, all who commit them, will most surely go to hell... but what if that is exactly where they are wanting to go?

I think there would be other ways to go to hell if that's what they want...!

true, but maybe there is something 'sacred' in this process.
