Scientists Scanned A Woman's Brain During An Out-Of-Body Experience — And What They Found Was Amazing.

It may sound like the plot of the Twilight Zone, but a psychology graduate student at the University of Ottawa says she can voluntarily enter an out-of-body experience. This was a lucky break for scientists, who were able to scan her brain during the episode.

Usually out-of-body experiences are a part of, say, a near-death experience. A patient may float above their own body as surgeons work on them. These experiences are usually attributed to the drugs in a patient's system, or the hormones released into their system by trauma.

A unique experience
The study — which only involved this one person — was published Feb. 10 in the journal Frontiers of Human Neuroscience, a peer-reviewed open access publication. The researchers are members of the School Of Psychology at the University of Ottawa.

According to the paper, this woman enters her out-of-body state right before sleeping, visualizing herself from above. She started doing so during naptime in preschool, they write. She currently only does it sometimes.

The researchers wrote in the paper:

She was able to see herself rotating in the air above her body, lying flat, and rolling along with the horizontal plane. She reported sometimes watching herself move from above but remained aware of her unmoving "real" body...

She told the researchers:

I feel myself moving, or, more accurately, can make myself feel as if I am moving. I know perfectly well that I am not actually moving. There is no duality of body and mind when this happens, not really. In fact, I am hyper-sensitive to my body at that point, because I am concentrating so hard on the sensation of moving. I am the one moving – me – my body. For example, if I ‘spin’ for long enough, I get dizzy. I do not see myself above my body. Rather, my whole body has moved up. I feel it as being above where I know it actually is. I usually also picture myself as moving up in my mind’s eye, but the mind is not substantive. It does not move unless the body does.

The brain out of the body
The researchers did a fMRI before and after asking her to enter her out-of-body state to find out what that looked like in the brain. They compared these to when she was imagining, but not actually entering, the state.

Interestingly, the pathway that seemed to be activated during her out-of-body experience is also involved in the mental representation of movements.

Where is the paralysis or vibrations that normally occur during this type exit, I would venture to say she is not having an OBE but a astral projection of experiences she had during other times in her life, when in fact she did OBE. In my early days of OBE paralysis had always been part of my exits but as time went on only the vibrations remained these are the tale tale signs one is going to exit, the sound that I wait for every night. Where are the readings on the vibrations if in deed she is having an OBE?

Awesome comment.. Some very specific observations, I applaud you! :) Some studies/surveys of the matter will show that many folks who have had spontaneous (or otherwise) OBEs, are not aware of the paralysis, or the vibrational state. I am like you,, I am aware of the paralysis, the vibrations, the 'pulsing', the energetic rushing/flowing,, (the sounds and noises that are in the room around mee body,,, bi-location) There have been times when I 'woke up' in the middle of an OBE that is already in progress!!!
I have found that there are different types/categories (for lack of better words) of OBE. I draw a difference between the traditional 'phantom, out of the body' OBE,, and an 'astral projection', which I know to be a more subtle state of awareness/existence.. So for me, OBE,, and Astral Projection,,, are the same, but quite different. I am very stubborn!! :( To this day, I spend my 'time' out of body,, in the energetic, non-physical counterpart to the physical world. Very often I will have no choice but to let my experience phase into the more subtle/Astral way of being... But if I had it my way,, I would play in the rains, and in the oceans and in the earth!!! :) :)

Sorry, got off topic a bit,,

My point is that perhaps the reason that she is not having paralysis or vibrations, is because she is having more of a 'mental projection',, like remote viewing..

I am like you,, lots of energetic sensations, vibrations and paralysis,,, takes some getting used to, no?? :p

Hello Jake

I don't recall a time of OBE exit that at least there were no vibrations. I do love the experience of OBE to the point I wrap myself in the higher frequencies pryer to every complete exit. Yesterday I had a very powerful astral projection where I was at another location there was nothing there that lead me to believe I was dreaming, in fact when I awoke, I was temperately lost for several minutes questioning this reality against this projection, but no vibrations. The mind is so powerful it can completely fill in all the pixels and give the viewer a feeling of belonging. The girl in this study may have at one time experienced OBES. The mind has captured the feeling to replay it over and over for her, if one closes their eyes after looking at something the image should remain for some time her mind is doing this creating a series of images to project against. The MRI observers are definitely seeing the changes in her mind but with all the sleep studies and groups like the phase are there no ways to compare the brain activities during these events.

I agree with you Jake bring on the oceans and rains and all the foreign places that make me say HMM! damn where did that memory come from, I do love a good puzzle.

Very interesting study and I'm not surprised by the results!
