* Circle remained in Warwickshire sky for three minutes and then vanished
* Georgina Heap, who took photo, said it is 'weirdest' thing she's ever seen
* UFO expert said he believed the circle could be a swarm of insects
* No fire in the area on Friday evening and no meteorological reason given

Weather experts have been baffled by a black ring which appeared in the sky above Leamington Spa on Friday evening.

Schoolgirl Georgina Heap was playing tennis with her mother Jo Heap when she looked up at the sky near Warwick castle and saw a mysterious black ring.

She photographed the circle on her iPhone but so far, no one can explain the origin of the strange black mark.

Georgina Heap, 16, took the photograph on her iPhone on Friday evening. The ring was
seen in the sky above Leamington Spa, near Warwick castle.

The ring remained in the sky for around three minutes before disappearing completely.

The circle resembles a giant smoke ring but Warwickshire Fire and Rescue service said that there had been no reports of fire at the time of the sighting.

The Met Office said that the ring did not appear to be weather-related.

Nick Pope, an expert on UFOs and a previous government adviser on unexplained phenomena, said he believed the circle to be 'organic'.

He said: 'It's a truly bizarre image. It looks like a smoke ring, but I can't see where it could have come from.

'Other alternatives would include some sort of unusual meteorological phenomenon.

'One other possibility is that the shape is made up of millions of bees or other insects, but I've never heard of insects behaving in this way before, so if this is the explanation, it's a real-life X-File.'

Miss Heap, who is studying for her GCSEs, described the circle as 'the weirdest thing I have ever seen'.

She said: 'I looked up at it and thought ‘what the hell?’, it was amazing.

'It was just floating there like a cloud and then it disappeared. It wasn’t birds either.

'There were about ten of us who stopped what we were doing and watched.'

That is strange ... looks like a strange giant swarm of insects in a ring ... doesn't really look much like smoke - I wish the video was longer.

did anyone solve the mysterious smoke-ring-phenomenon? If not: It was a test of an outdoor theatre-group called "The Lunatics", who made a big show in Detmold at the old hangars. Used pretty much pyrotechnics, awesome stuff. It was a great show. And in the end, they shot a giant fireball off the roof of the old hangar which produced the smoke ring. conclusion: it was real (to all "mimimimi lighter-to-glass-haters"), but not some kind of ufo-stuff but just burned gas, butane and lycopodium.

Although there are many phenomena which are inexplicable, and attributed to Alien Sightings. but when we talk about ‘UFO-Rings’ many of these rings can be explained as ‘Smoke Rings’, ‘Fire Rings’, ‘Vortex Rings’ or even Halo’s.

Is it possible that a temporary electromagnetic anomaly caused some swarming insects to travel this strange circuit?

Almost looks like Nanobots... like a big Lens of Nanos.

Except these are not nanos.

there is too much 3d depth to the darkness of the clouds.

Ants sometimes form circles because they follow one another through pheromones. Since ants are related to bees, it may bee possible that bees do something similar...

Could it be weather balloon that caught fire and burnt somewhere in the upper atmosphere or something similar ?

It's scary :target:

Once again the truth is interesting but dull - much duller than fevered speculation.

The eventual answer came in the middle of Tuesday afternoon when a statement from Warwick Castle confirmed that they had been testing fireworks.

Buares seems to have hit the nail on the head in post number 3!

Thanks Nick.

I wonder if this was took at Niagara Falls, Ontario. This summer we were staying at a hotel, which overlooked the new Mini Putt Golf, complete with a scaled down version of a volcano. This volcano would "blow" it's top every 10 - 12 minutes, spewing a huge cloud in the sky, and when not windy, would actually produce the same type of smoke ring shown here. It was quite the show, and we could even feel the heat blast from across the road. :cool2:

Here is a pic I took of one that lasted for 5 minutes in the sky,
