Hi all

Sorry to have to ask advice on this forum regarding email, but I am now at a loss and my ip seems useless to help.

Whenever I check my email via Outlook, I get loads of emails saying :

Mail Delivery System [MAILER-DAEMON@out.ipsmtp4nec.opaltelecom.net]

I am getting atleast 20 of these per day now and I contacted Talktalk my ip and a week later I am still getting the bloody things.

Anyone able to offer advice on how to remove this whatever it is that's causing it as I am now starting to receive replies from folks who are obviously receiving them.

Thanks

Sounds like a virus. You should reset your computer to a date before this started to happen. Hope you have the reset function available and up to date. Clean out your registry also. Hope this helps.

Peace!

Go to start, type in programs, look up the Mailer daemon ect..ect and either delete or block or uninstall. It probably came in with an upgrade to something recently done. You can also to be sure it's gone, go to type in system restore in the start menu box, and go back a few months. Expecially if you did an upgrade. The small print and 3rd, 4th, and umpteenth parties snooping your pc, can be a royal pain.

Good luck. Have you thought of either investing in AVG or adding the free Microsoft essentials? I use the MEssential, when a virus or malware get in, and when it's contaminated a file, the Essential has a back up for you to recover, or replace what was contaminated.

Hope this helped.

I think Mailer Daemon activates when certain Email providers (or brands) like Yahoo! recognize an address no longer in use,
or the server recognizes a spam signature.

Spammers learned that the most effective way to spam is by hijacking someone's real email without denying access to it.
This helps hide the spammer's true identity, the origin of the spams, and yes you need to change your PW ASAP like the other user suggested.

My email got hacked similarly once, within a month or two of my mom's.
We both used Yahoo!. What the hacker did was sent a spammy link to everyone in my address list.

So your address list sounds full of old addresses no longer in service?
Or the spammer's mailing list is ancient as a fossilized buffalo chip.

p.s. the hacker is using your email account as his personal "spoofer" account.
Some hacker-friends run mailer services that hide the real address and put a fake one on it, too. Like for example, service@blizzard dot com.

To gain access to WoW accounts.
Nasty kids, but mostly harmless.

Amazingly few financial compromises actually made.
I don't know why they bother.

Hi

Thanks for your input on this:
I have windows 7 which til yesterday had avg antivirus running and updated, I now have avast.
I looked in the programs for anything similar to mailer daemon, but nothing not even in the remove programs in control panel.
I just checked and I have no entries in my address book.
I will try resetting to a previous point but to be honest, I never set points.

Thanks

Don

Hi
Just checked and my last restore point is 10th of this month and I believe I saw one of these mail messages prior to that date so unsure if it would do any good.

is any account set up for forwarding?
like could someone be sending their own address book through your account with minimal evidence?
what does your "sent" folder look like?

A mailer Daemon is a component of every email server, you'll not find it on your computer. The "reply" you're getting is because the server that particular email was sent to cannot find the account to deliver the email to, so it responds to the sending server (and the account that sent the email - in this case yours) that the recipient couldn't be found.

This is typical of spam emails and can usually be easily fixed all though time consuming depending on how many emails you have in Outlook. Here's a few things you can do:

go through your inbox, find and delete any spam email or emails from people you don't know.
look in your sent folder, find and delete any spam email or emails from people you don't know.
Also look in your outbox, find and delete any spam email or emails from people you don't know, all though this usually clears out once an email is sent.
If you have a web interface for your email account (can log in through a browser), do that and then look for spam in there as well. Same folders or at least the inbox/sent.

What seems to be happening is you have a spam email somewhere that is trying to send a copy of itself out by either sniffing the headers of emails you have now or possibly accessing your address book and then trying to use the email addresses it finds. I've seen lots of these and they hardly ever get it right so people mostly deal with what you are now.

Be careful with antivirus/anti malware scans in this case. Even though they're getting better, they can sometimes remove your entire inbox (or other infected folder in your email program). There's nothing huge to worry about here because in most cases the removed "inbox" or other folders can be recovered and if this happens you'll need to recover and then go through and manually clean out the folders.

Hope this helps! :)

Ok Zebowho, I have done all that, infact I deleted everything to be sure and printed what I could not lose. I also ran afterwards the new version of CCleaner, rebooted and still getting them???

I've seen daemon responders take up to a week to reply for undeliverable emails. This all depends on how that email server was setup. So watch it for a while, it will probably start dropping off. Why this is, is because the messages you're getting now could have been sent up to a week ago.

Just to make sure, you cleared out "sent" and also went to talktalk.co.uk and logged into webmail to clean your account there as well right?

If after a day to three these messages aren't starting to slow down then there is still an email in one of your other folders or online (in webmail) that was missed and still trying to send out.

Other things to look for in the mean time (and what I tell my clients);
1-any email from people you know but didn't expect may be infected (look for attachments or advertisements within the email)
2-look in other folders for the same and/or email from senders you don't know
3-you'll need to check both Outlook and webmail to be sure you get everything.
When any of these are found, delete the email.

After absolutely cleaning both Outlook/webmail and the system messages are still coming in (given a few days), then there is another possibility your address has been spoofed, meaning someone is masking theirs with yours to send out spam. I'd have to read the daemon header to see if this it shows anything on this front. If you want me to look at one, then pm me a copy/paste of one, don't post it here in the thread. The fix for this unfortunately is on Talktalk's side with stronger email policies to reject these types of emails being sent through their system.
