Ever have that urge to get your doggie some neat treats because he or she was so bright, so enthused and happy to be with you and play with you?

Then find out that your best friend gets sick and dies ? Really bums ya out.. Similar "treats" and even cat-food and dog food, besides treats coming out of CHINA have been the cause of kidney failure, and subsequent death.

Pet Treat Mystery: More Dogs Dead, 3 People Sick, FDA Says

"Pet jerky treats, mostly imported from China, are now linked to more than 1,000 deaths in dogs, more than 4,800 complaints about animal illness, and, for the first time, sickness in three people who ate the products, federal health officials said Friday.

"But Food and Drug Administration officials say they still can't identify a specific cause for the reported illnesses or deaths, despite seven years of testing and investigation.

“The agency continues to caution pet owners that jerky treats are not required for a balanced diet and encourage them to consult with their veterinarians, both prior to feeding treats and if they notice symptoms in their pets,” FDA said in a statement.

"The humans who consumed the treats included two toddlers who ingested them accidentally and an adult who may have been snacking on the questionable products, which include chicken, duck or sweet potato jerky treats, an FDA official said."

We all know how little kids are always putting things in their mouths "testing"... In this case one's child could be harmed by these Chinese product.

Don't get the urge to try something "new and flavorful".. obviously not when it is a tainted dog treat from China..

Filler in Animal Feed Is Open Secret in China

ZHANGQIU, China, April 28 — As American food safety regulators head to China to investigate how a chemical made from coal found its way into pet food that killed dogs and cats in the United States, workers in this heavily polluted northern city openly admit that the substance is routinely added to animal feed as a fake protein.

The Chinese have even done this to BABY FOOD for human consumption.

For years, producers of animal feed all over China have secretly supplemented their feed with the substance, called melamine, a cheap additive that looks like protein in tests, even though it does not provide any nutritional benefits, according to melamine scrap traders and agricultural workers here.

“Many companies buy melamine scrap to make animal feed, such as "fish feed” said Ji Denghui, general manager of the Fujian Sanming Dinghui Chemical Company, which sells melamine. (FISH FOOD TOO! gees)

Melamine is at the center of a recall of 60 million packages of pet food, after the chemical was found in wheat gluten linked this month to the deaths of at least 16 pets in the United States. For folks that are eating veggy, if one has obtained product manufactured in China, there is a potential that one is eating melamine disguised as "protein".

We often talk about GMO's (Genetically modified foods); we should keep in mind ADULTERATED FOODS are a major concern, and unscrupulous companies off-shore are known to do such to products we think we are getting a "bargain" on.

The Food and Drug Administration has already banned imports of wheat gluten from China after it received more than 14,000 reports of pets believed to have been sickened by packaged food.

How many people have been sickened by veggy products thusly contaminated?

ANIMAL FEED CONTAMINATED by CHINESE adulteration

The Department of Agriculture has also stepped in.

On Thursday, the agency ordered more than 6,000 hogs to be quarantined or slaughtered after some of the food ingredients laced with melamine were "accidentally" sent to hog farms in eight states, including California.

What else has China done to adulterate or damage shipped food?

In recent years, for instance, China’s food safety scandals have involved everything from fake baby milk formulas and soy sauce made from human hair to instances where cuttlefish were soaked in calligraphy ink to improve their color and eels were fed contraceptive pills to make them grow long and slim.

I read something about this last week. I also saw in the same Facebook thread read where an individual is making her own treats and dog food by giving them raw meat and vegetables - that would get really expensive - and yet, I love my dogs and would die for them so, I've got to figure something out soon.

Beaver County Times - Jun 19, 1974 - Jack Anderson Reporter

Anderson says soaring prices are driving the poor, especially old people with fixed incomes, to eating cheap dog food and cat foods.

This is from a confidential Senate nutritional study.

Les Whitten reports Anderson says he tried some of the pet foods, which he says suddenly are selling big in the ghettos and communities for the impoverished elderly.

According to Les, the canned foods had a "rank" taste which made him queasy. The bulk discount versions of dry foods were coarse tasting and hard to swallow.

Anderson reports that George McGovern and Charles Percy will explore the food problem at hearings beginning this coming week.

This was from June 1974, and nothing was done about it.

I would stay away from any food-product from China. China is notorious when it comes to contaminated foods.

If your fortunate enough to have a dog or cat as a life friend ( not pet) then you should treat them
with the same regard as one of your human family members. My wife and I asked the organic dog
supplier what he makes his meals up with and started to make it our selves.....
You make enough for two weeks and freeze it....It contains veges like carrot and broccoli, plus lean
mince and steak. Our dog is like my little bubba so I feed her as well as I feed myself

Susan Thixton is an advocate for improved pet food and is reporting on what has become a cozy cooperative relationship between pet food manufacturers and the government agencies that are supposed to regulate food safety on behalf of the citizens.

Truth About Pet Food has a newsletter that you can sign up for to keep up on the pet food news. On the right hand side of her website you can see a countdown of the time taken since pets died from the treats from China, and many of their photos. There are various articles on the site over time on this issue and the incredible lack of governmental response to this issue. Also, there are recipes, recommendations to pet food manufacturers who produce healthier food, and when there is a recall or warning about various foods, special notices come by email.

Petco and PetSmart say, "That's IT ! We won't buy from China ! "

Pet food retailers Petco and PetSmart have decided to ban dog and cat treats that are made in China.

Petco has indicated that by the end of this year it will pull down all dog and cat treats from its 1,300 retail stores as well as online. PetSmart has also said that it will not sell Chinese-made pet treats March 2015 onwards. Petco's and PetSmart's decision comes after both retailers complained to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) that a jerky treat made in China was possibly making pets ill.

"We've been following the FDA warnings and related customer concerns closely, and we've been actively reducing our China-made assortment and expanding our American-made offerings for several years now," says Jim Myers, CEO of Petco.

"We know the FDA hasn't yet identified a direct cause for the reported illnesses, but we decided the uncertainty of the situation outweighs the lack of actual proof. It has taken some time and careful thought to get to this point, but we're proud to make the change and we believe our customers will be pleased with it as well."

A Petco statement suggests that since 2007, the FDA has cautioned customers regarding a possible link between consumption of jerky pet food made in China and illness in dogs. The FDA says that it has received around 5,000 cases of pet illness after eating jerky products. However, as the FDA did not find a direct link between the illness in pets and consumption of Chinese treats, and the FDA has not asked for a recall of jerky products.

The products sold are not limited to US.

Storm Taylor thought she was going to lose little Tazzy, her beloved Corgi-cross, a couple of years ago.

She’d bought her three dogs treats around Christmas 2011 and gave them to her pets to eat early in 2012.

“Tazzy had diarrhea and she was throwing up so bad,” Taylor said from her home in Vanderhoof. “It started at 2 a.m. and as soon as the veterinarian’s office opened, I had her there.”

Being the middle of winter with three feet of snow on the ground, the idea of Tazzy having gotten into anything outside was ruled out.

After several tests, the vet determined the Corgi had had a toxic reaction, with the dog treat being the prime suspect.

Taylor’s Labradors, Chaos and Shady, were sick, too, but being a lot bigger than Tazzy they were nowhere near as ill.

Taylor and other pet owners banded together to start a Facebook page — Animal Parents Against Pet Treats and Food Made in China (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Animal-Parents-Against-Pet-Treats-and-Food-Made-in-China/235390426550583) — and after a slow start, it has gained momentum.

In Canada, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association has communicated concerns from vets and pet owners to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
