View Full Version : MSM Powder...Little Help Please

Hi Guys,
I just recently started a regimen of MSM powder, mainly for my joints but also for a host of other things.
Here's the deal: it tastes like utter sh!t. I naively mixed it with plain old water when I began, and paid for it dearly in the form of dry heaves. Since then, I've tried Gatorade and milk, but no matter how fast I down the stuff, I still get that rancid taste. The irony is that guy at the health food store said "most people take the pills because they don't like the taste of the powder...but (and here's the kicker) it really doesn't taste that bad at all." That was the biggest fattest lie of the century, and I plan on taking it up with the guy next time I go back in.
Is there some trick to this? Is there any liquid out there that will temper the taste a bit? I'm not unwilling to make a sacrifice for my health (I drank my own urine for several months not too long ago) but this is really disgusting.
Suggestions? Tips? Advice?

I would find a topical cream or solution.
When I took MSM orally, it upset my stomach, but I found a cream that felt really good going on my skin.
I don't remember the brand name of the one I used, but it shouldn't be hard to find a good one.
How much do you take? I take about 1 teaspoon in 1/4 Glass of water or so. A little bitter but taste is ok imo.
I started with a very small amount like 1/3 of a spoon, try it for a week or so you get used to the taste pretty quick.

Hi bruno dante,
I used the product called, “MSM 2000,” by Life-flo. I had an allergic reaction. I experienced an itchy tingling under my skin and hives in my scalp.
I wouldn’t rule out the “dry heaves” as your body’s way to expel the product. You may have an intolerance or be allergic to it.
Rather than ingest the power in liquid, you could put it into capsules. 778 neighbour of some guy/Ed has posted about that (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?6528-Liver-detox-Liver-flush&p=741828&viewfull=1#post741828).
I drink Rooibos tea from the company called “Choice Organic Tea”.

"10 Health Benefits Of Rooibos Tea"
1. Caffeine free – The rooibos plant grows naturally without any caffeine. This is important, as it means it does not need to undergo a chemical process to remove the caffeine. It also means that anyone can drink it, including those who do not want to drink caffeine such as children & pregnant women. The other key benefit of no caffeine is that rooibos tea can be consumed in unrestricted amounts. Some South African’s will consume 5-6 cups per day.
2. Contains powerful antioxidants – Rooibos tea contains a wide array of antioxidants, which help to protect the body in a number of ways. Two polyphenol antioxidants called aspalathin and nothofagin are found in high concentrations in rooibos tea. These antioxidants protect the body by fighting free radicals. These are unstable cells, which attack healthy cells in order to stabilize themselves. The polyphenols also have anti-inflammatory properties and can safeguard against heart disease.
3. Prevents against some cancers – Some studies have demonstrated a link between consumption of rooibos tea and a reduction of cancer-causing chemicals. This is because of the high level of dominant antioxidants, some of which have anti-mutagenic (anti-cancer) properties. This means that they defend cells & DNA against damage and inhibit them from developing into cancer.
4. High mineral content – One of the key health benefits of rooibos tea is that it contains several minerals that are vital to health. These include: magnesium (essential for the nervous system), calcium & manganese (essential for strong teeth and bones), zinc (important for metabolism) and iron (critical for helping blood & muscles distribute oxygen).
5. Improves circulation – One of the many potent antioxidants in rooibos tea is called Chysoeriol. It can improve circulation by preventing the activity of the enzyme that triggers cardiovascular disease. Drinking rooibos tea also has been known to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
6. Relieves stomach complaints – As rooibos tea contains high levels of flavonoids, especially one called quercetin. It has the ability to relieve numerous abdominal ailments such as cramps, diahorrea and indigestion. Flavonoids are known help to reduce spasm, inflammation and allergies. It has also been widely stated that the health benefits of rooibos tea extend to alleviating colic in babies. s it is totally caffeine free, it is perfectly safe for them to drink rooibos tea.
7. Aids absorption of iron – Unlike most black teas, which prevent the body from absorbing iron effectively because of the tannins they contain, rooibos tea supports the body in absorbing iron. Rooibos tea contains less than half the tannins of black tea.
8. Can relieve skin conditions – A recent found that rooibos tea can help you to look more beautiful! Rooibos tea contains phenylpyretic acid, which can help to improve acne, psoriasis and eczema. You can apply a freshly brewed and cooled tea bag to the affected areas and it will soothe and heal any inflammation.
9. Can protect against Parkinsons/Alzheimers disease – Drinking rooibos tea regularly can protect against a process known as lipid peridoxation. This occurs when free radicals damage brain cells and nerve tissue. If this is prolonged, it can lead eventually to progressive and deteriorating brain disease, such as Alzheimer’s.
10. Encourages restful sleep – Rooibos is unique in that it can be consumed as often as you wish and at any time of day. Many people choose to drink it before bedtime as it can help with insomnia. Due to its high mineral content and lack of caffeine, it’s known to help people to feel calm and relaxed.

Hi Bruno,
I take capsules, 4-8 per day (1000mg each). The stuff does wonders for all sorts of things you won't even know you needed until you have been taking it for a while.
It does taste pretty bad, but cheap sources likely taste worse than more expensive ones (likely due to contaminants / leftover solvents, etc.). The company I work for purchases a supply that has been slightly "mintified" so as to help negate the nastiness, but we only put it in capsules and don't sell it as powder.
The taste is sulphur-ish and bitter, a vegetable smoothie should cover the taste a bit, or even orange juice.
I don't find the taste that bad either, but I do know the company I work for (and thus where I buy it) uses only top of the line raw materials. I would definitely let other people taste your MSM (who know what it tastes like) to see if it tastes normal, or acceptable to them. If not, try another reputable brand; and if so, try using vegetables blends to (or strong citrus like orange, or grapefruit) to help mask the taste. If all that fails, get capsules, but take at least 3 grams up to 10 grams daily. The effects take some time to notice, but you will notice it, particularly in your skin. After about a month you will have excellent skin. ;)

MSM is tough, i mix it with a bunch of other things that don't taste that good either in about 12oz of water. I now put in a fair amount of stevia to mask the taste with oversweetness and just choke it down fast in a few big drinks. I also think about all the shot's of liquor I've ever done and then I reason that I have to do it or who's really drivin' this rig?
Personally, for all its hyped benefits, I try to stay clear of main steam media, like you Bruno, it makes me heave.. N

I am a big fan of baths. The skin absorbs and alos takes in only what is needed and excludes the rest. IMO the skin, our largest organ is meant to soak in tubs of warm, soothing mineral water daily.
I first noticed when people became concerned about radiation that baking soda is a good detox. I make different products like bath salts and house and laundry and even dishwasher, laundry and other cleaners from baking soda, borax, sea salt and citric acid. I have loads of salts that I use in my bath formulas...sea salt, magnesium, epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) MSM and essential oils. Magnesium works well absorbed through the skin and the same with MSM. I googled MSM and found a quote that backs me up.
Research has shown MSM in your bathwater may help treat a variety of skin conditions including rashes, shingles, acne, eczema, psoriasis, as well as evening out skin tone form scarring or dark patches.
You may also enjoy the same health benefits you would by consuming MSM, as it is highly absorbent. This includes relief of arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other inflammatory diseases.
Bath additives that work well with MSM
MSM opens blood vessels and helps your body more readily absorb other nutrients you may feel like adding to your bath. Make it your own to get the best out of your bathing experiences.
Things to try:
Epsom salt
Essential oils (Lavender, Geranium, Patchouli, Vetiver, Rosewood, Cedarwood, Orange, Clove, Eucalyptus Radiata, German or Roman Chamomile to name a few)
Corn starch
Milk powder
Vitamins (vitamin C powder is a great combo with MSM)

These are some vitamin notes, I’ve taken from DeDukshyn posts:
“…The Alive! line of natural vitamins from Nature's Way are very good. So are Garden of Life, Source Naturals…”
(Hope you don't mind me adding these companies, DeDukshyn. ;))

MSM does have a lot of benefits, but from what I've researched and tried. You need LARGE amounts of this stuff. This guy recommends around 30g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYSqyA4Y3nc
I have personally taken 25 grams a day for over a week. I bought 4 lbs in bulk from amazon of the powder. I weighed out 25g a day, mixed with clean water, and slammed it. Taste is meh but that is something you can get over for your health. After a while, I didn't mind the taste anymore, especially since the body loves sulphur and MSM is absorbed very fast.
I was not taking it to address arthritis or joint related pain, I was using it to help detox my pineal gland. Now I have arthritis pain from candida overgrowth so, this may be a warm welcome for my body to start using MSM again. I will see if I get any pain/joint relief this time around.

Thanks all!
I realized just a little while ago that I was taking about 6x more than is recommended on the container. I've been taking about 6 grams a shot instead of the suggested 1.
I don't know why they made their scoop so big. I just assumed that was the suggested serving. Wrong.
Anyway, it's much easier going down at the smaller dose. Still a little nasty, but tolerable.
The brand I'm using is 'Answers From Nature' for all those that are curious. I'd never heard of it up till now.

Although familiar, I'm not "intimately" familiar with those brands. :) MSM is relatively simple, so any of those are good, I am sure. I'd watch out for dirt cheap sources. :) The company I work for is AOR (Advanced Orthomolecular Research), mostly just Canadian distribution, but there are a few American companies that carry our products. Amazon and iHerb have ended up with some AOR products as well (not sure how), but they are expensive - worth the extra cost for some products, but not for others. Personally, MSM is one of those possibly not worth the extra cost (but quality is guaranteed) ... (hoping coworkers don't come here :spy:)

25 seems a bit overkill to me, 10 to 15 is good for detox and you need to take for several months for it to do its job; after initial detox - 3 - 10 grams should be plenty for maintenance.
Also, raw sprouts and sulphurous veggies (kale, cabbage, brussel sprouts, broccoli, (particularly sprouts!)) are high in MSM --just don't cook them -- MSM breaks down into useless molecules very easily with heat. Raw food diets benefit greatly from high levels of natural MSM. Eat raw where you can.

Perhaps neither the "recommended" dosage, nor the scoop size, is indicative of what would be best for your body.
Recommended doses are often kept small, so that the number of "doses" per container is a larger number, or (for products with a reputedly "bad" ingredient, such as fat) so that the amount of such "bad" ingredient can be kept less than 0.5 grams per dose, and thus legally proclaimed as zero (0).
On the other hand, scoops are kept large, so you will use up the product sooner and buy more.
Neither one is a reliable indicator of what's best for you.

I have just started taking MSM. First I have taken some raw powder on tongue, and it dissolves in your mouth quickly. Then when taking it with water I dissolved it with very less water so the water will be saturated with MSM. This water tastes very bitter like Alcohol. I will prefer dissolving MSM with very little water because the other tastes that MSM has are nullified by the strong bitter taste and you can gulp the solution in one go. You can eat something for taste just like people eat after drinking alcohol to forget the taste of it.

Just my two cents. The MSM I have used before which I had positive results from had almost no taste. I had a secondary unexpected side benefit, this stuff really improves the texture of your skin after a few months. My original motive for using it was pain.
