How many women are stoned to death each year in so called Honour killings?

Quote -"A pregnant woman was stoned to death by her own family in front of a Pakistani high court on Tuesday for marrying the man she loved.

Nearly 20 members of the woman's family, including her father and brothers, attacked her and her husband with batons and bricks in broad daylight before a crowd of onlookers in front of the high court of Lahore, the police investigator Rana Mujahid said.

Hundreds of women are murdered every year in Muslim-majority Pakistan in so-called " honour killings" – carried out by husbands or relatives as a punishment for alleged adultery or other illicit sexual behaviour – but public stoning is extremely rare.

Mujahid said the woman's father has been arrested for murder and that police were working to apprehend all those who participated in the "heinous crime".

Another police officer, Naseem Butt, identified the slain woman as Farzana Parveen, 25, and said she had married Mohammad Iqbal against her family's wishes after being engaged to him for years.

Her father, Mohammad Azeem, had filed an abduction case against Iqbal, which the couple was contesting, her lawyer Mustafa Kharal said. He confirmed that she was three months pregnant.

Arranged marriages are the norm among conservative Pakistanis, who view marriage for love as a transgression."

I heard about this incident on the BBC where a discussion took place telling of intermarriage to cousins and other men chosen by the girl's father. According to the report, the real reason behind this enslavement of the females is to keep family property "in the family." Apart from the inadvisability of intermarriage with several generations of first cousins to keep the money and property in the family, what about the genetic damage! All the family which took part in this slaughter should be put to death. Nothing short of this will stop it happening again and again; also the CLERICS and others who support this policy should be dealt with likewise. Most important: The laws promoting ownership of property which is perpetuating this carnage must be changed. The family that persists in this practive should lose all its property. Amor

Recently I heard about this on the BBC which related these honor killings to the need to control who the girl marries in order to keep the family's property in the family. This results in marrying first cousins and similar intermarriage which should present a genetic threat to the tribe. All who participate in the honor killing should be similarly dealt with by the State, and that includes those Clerics and others who teach that this is right. Finally, any laws concerning the transmission of ownership of land which promote this practice should be changed immediately; and any family thereafter found to use honor killing should have all their property removed from them. There are terrible things happening to Muslim (and other stringent societies) girls' globally who 'go against the family' even innocently. We have to publicise all these atrocities, and take these incidents forward to any court of Human Rights wherever possible. Bring them into the mainstream, and never give up on these needless atrocities. Even in the North West of UK you would think we are 'civilised', but the immigrants keep to themselves, and their own 'traditions' and honour killings seem to be acceptable. Difficult to police here, as the family close in and evidence is hidden. This is ludicrous - we must stop it. One of my students was forced to marry his very poor cousin from an obscure place in Pakistan, it turns out she was directly related and they had a very disabled child. One of many in that family of inbreds. He didn't want to marry - but it was forced upon him for 'family honour'. What a waste of a talented life, he is now reduced to the 'in-bred' society yet again. Lots of my students were born here, lived the western life, and were suddenly thrust into some hideous society in an alien world which ruined all aspirations and their lives as they thought they may be 'free' to choose here - NOT SO!! I am so disappointed by the immigration policies of our governments, and the lack of support these immigrants receive, I go with UKIP and stop immigration until we can appreciate and support the realities of absorbing multi-cultural ethics within our laws.
