Fresh light on China's Red Deer Cave People raises big questions.


Ancient remains found in a cave in China may belong to a species of human that lived 11,000 years ago.

In what could be one of the most significant paleoanthropological discoveries ever made, Australian researcher Darren Curnoe and his colleagues believe that they may have uncovered evidence of a previously undiscovered species of human that lived alongside our ancestors as recently as 11,000 years ago.

Known as the "Red Deer Cave people", these hominids were extremely similar to modern humans but with some significant physical differences.

The idea that they could have survived until so recently, even outliving the Neanderthals, has raised an array of questions about how these ancient people would have lived, how they interacted with humans and what it was that caused them to die out.

"The fossils just don’t fit with the dominant view in science at the moment about who was around 11,000 years ago or 14,000 years ago, how they relate to us, and how we think of ourselves as humans in relation to nature," said Curnoe.

"We tend to think of ourselves as special. So it raises some pretty deep and challenging questions."

Another recent find in a cave in Spain dating to ca. 450,000 years ago, and another branch of the hominid tree This was possibly an ancestor of Neanderthals, but it is not certain. This case, although very much older, shows likewise that there was no simple chain of human evolution, but the human family had many members in many branches over the last million years. It is harder and harder for me to get excited about a "missing link". The landscape of our evolution seems to have been very rich, rich enough to provide a hominid species or two in our direct line to help fill in any gaps in the descent of man over the last several million years.

There are some that speak of them in a brotherly, spiritual way. What if some are good and some are bad? Just as we are?

This is a very fair assessment.
Some may be good, and some may be bad.
But I do not think they have values or ethics. Their thinking is random and impulse based.
I think just as a wild animal such as a chimpanzee could be a gentle companion for untold years, one day that same companion could eat your face off.
This compiled with the fact they may have psychic abilities makes them very dangerous indeed.
