A Mysterious Sound Is Driving People Insane — And Nobody Knows What's Causing It

Dr. Glen MacPherson doesn't remember the first time he heard the sound. It may have started at the beginning of 2012, a dull, steady droning like that of a diesel engine idling down the street from his house in the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. A lecturer at the University of British Columbia and high school teacher of physics, mathematics and biology, months passed before MacPherson realized that the noise, which he'd previously dismissed as some background nuisance like car traffic or an airplane passing overhead, was something abnormal.

"Once I realized that this wasn't simply the ambient noise of living in my little corner of the world, I went through the typical stages and steps to try to isolate the sources," MacPherson told Mic. "I assumed it may be an electrical problem, so I shut off the mains to the entire house. It got louder. I went driving around my neighborhood looking for the source, and I noticed it was louder at night."

Exasperated, MacPherson turned his focus to scientific literature and pored over reports of the mysterious noise before coming across an article (http://www.scientificexploration.org/journal/jse_18_4_deming.pdf) by University of Oklahoma geophysicist David Deming in the Journal of Scientific Exploration, a peer-reviewed academic journal devoted to exploring topics outside of mainstream science. "I almost dropped my laptop," says MacPherson. "I was sure that I was hearing the Hum."
"The Hum" refers to a mysterious sound heard in places around the world by a small fraction of a local population. It's characterized by a persistent and invasive low-frequency rumbling or droning noise often accompanied by vibrations. While reports of "unidentified humming sounds" pop up in scientific literature dating back to the 1830s, modern manifestations of the contemporary hum have been widely reported by national media in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia since the early 1970s.
Regional experiences of the phenomenon vary, and the Hum is often prefixed with the region where the problem centers, like the "Windsor Hum" in Ontario, Canada, the "Taos Hum" in New Mexico, or the "Auckland Hum" for Auckland, New Zealand. Somewhere between 2 and 10% of people can hear the Hum, and inside isolation is no escape. Most sufferers find the noise to be more disturbing indoors and at night. Much to their dismay, the source of the mysterious humming is virtually untraceable.

While the uneven experience of the Hum in local populations has led some researchers to dismiss it as a "mass delusion," the nuisance and pain associated with the phenomenon make delusion a dissatisfying hypothesis. Intrigued by the mysterious noise, MacPherson launched The World Hum Map and Database (http://www.thehum.info/) in December 2012 to collect testimonies of other Hum sufferers and track its global impact (he now also moderates a decade-old Yahoo forum (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/humforum/info) along with Deming).

MacPherson quickly discovered that what to him was a strange rumbling was actually having pernicious effects on hundreds of people, from headaches to irritability to sleep deprivation. There are reports (http://www.theguardian.com/science/2004/jul/22/research.science3) that weeks of insomnia caused by the Bristol Hum drove at least three U.K. residents to suicide. "It completely drains energy, causing stress and loss of sleep," a sufferer told a British newspaper in 1992. "I have been on tranquilizers and have lost count of the number of nights I have spent holding my head in my hands, crying and crying." Thousands of people around the world have shared similar experiences of the Hum; some, like MacPherson, are devoting their time to finally uncovering its source.

Who else can hear this too? Very low and not that loud a bit faint but if you focus upon it you might activate your senses 10fold!

We all automatically create filters not to hear certain things anymore, but this is different because these are non-stop random rumbling sounds! Far more difficult (or impossible) for the mind to ignore or to filter!

Who have tips how to deal with this and/or knows how to track/locate the source of this weird highly annoying noise?

Let me know! ... I keep the rest of my network informed & updated!

Interesting. . . .but I find the German most peculiar! I speak it fluently (studied in Germany) but am not a native speaker. . . & I find the notion that German should become the world language rather alarming; it reminds me of my VERY ex-husband who would proclaim loudly that only German should be spoken in our home - no English, & certainly no Spanish.

it is because Et's say it's the language that can express the exact meanings of words like no other language ... scroll down about halfway , the conversation is Ptaah explains since the 70's the alphabet groups-sectarian religious fanatics , use technology to steer our emotions ... that hum has been in the background forever , now humans are awakening they can hear it , not just on a subliminal level but , in real time ...

i have heard it off and on since 2011...no pain..its a low hum..i compare it to a grain elevator drying out grain..sounds a bit like that.if you know the sound.it does increase during the morning hours.i was so disturbed when it first started I spent days off and on cuttn power completely to the house to see if it was some kinda background feed..???..compound this with me constantly talking about my ufo and abductions..i didn't say a peep for a month.didnt wanna worry everyone any more than I already had.its not near as loud as it was in the onset.adapt..overcome...????and comes and goes now a days.this was also before we had internet..and still don't have cell phones or microwave oven.
nice work john.
truth and balance always.
William.

I don't know if it's of the same nature but I hear at night very faraway office-like sounds, printers 'n so with occasional beeps. There's no offices where I live that I'm aware of.

I agree there are certain things (particularly scientific) that can best be expressed in German, but others can best be expressed in Spanish, Portuguese, English. . . .etc I don't know any others well enough, although I used to be fairly fluent in Thai, which is hopeless for scientific type matters.

Is the Quetzal referred to, the same one that Samael Aun Weor spoke of?

I was Bushcamping in a particular part of the wilderness inTasmania Australia for a few weeks in 2012 and heard something akin to whats being spoken of most everynight and my thoughts and instinct told me that what i might be hearing was Something from Underground as it was next to near impossible that there was anything else even remotely near where i was.

I used to hear this quite often when I lived in Kansas, but I have never heard since moving back to the Appalachian Mountains.

I have no idea what it is. I used to think it was simply the sounds of the planet but I would think if it were this then I would hear it here as well.
