A beautifully written song of a common journey.
The artist expresses what the heart feels...

"Coming Back To Life"
Where were you when I was burned and broken
While the days slipped by from my window watching
Where were you when I was hurt and I was helpless
Because the things you say and the things you do surround me
While you were hanging yourself on someone else's words
Dying to believe in what you heard
I was staring straight into the shining sun
Lost in thought and lost in time
While the seeds of life and the seeds of change were planted
Outside the rain fell dark and slow
While I pondered on this dangerous but irresistible pastime
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the moment had arrived
For killing the past and coming back to life
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the waiting had begun
And headed straight..into the shining sun

Hey joeecho, are the highlighted parts meant to draw attention to the recent thread/topic of sun gazing? I had never heard of this until the other day and wonder if that's what the lyrics are referencing, literally.

Hi Matt, I did not see that thread. I will have to check it out as what appears as random threads on Avalon is really a tapestry, like expressing one thing in an infinite number of ways.
This songs says so much with so little. For me, the more I listen to it the clearer it get in its expression.
IMO: On a spiritual level, it talks of the universe/ infinity and the seeker of truth.
"I was staring straight into the shining sun" Like a marksman, the infinite is the 'target' and the shining sun is the 'mark'. So here the marksman has identified the mark and is focused on nothing but the mark (staring straight)
"While I pondered on this dangerous but irresistible pastime" This sentence spoke to me as a meditative soul and the danger being...am I wasting my finite time on this earth? And the danger of pondering...that going it alone in the dark where there are infinite paths that lead nowhere....perhaps the danger of being lost forever?
Irresistible Pastime: Finding the way back through the dark (infinity). Straight into the Sun.
"And headed straight..into the shining sun" The marksman becomes the arrow, hitting the mark.
Other parts of the lyrics speak of what I have experienced as well, like:
"While you were hanging yourself on someone else's words
Dying to believe in what you heard"
This is like following someone else like a guru, priest, pope, psychiatrist, scientist, mystic, a trusted friend etc. in the dark all the while they are no better off then the one following them. The blind leading the blind, so to speak.
There is no warn path to the sun as all is dark. Perhaps there is only a hint, a vague imprinted memory in the seeker. Is the danger in trusting that that memory isn't just another dark path that leads nowhere?

Wow,,, This is my favorite song, from my favorite album, from my favorite band!!!! You nailed it!! :)
The Division Bell is deeply conceptual,, just like most of the others. It went highly unnoticed because it was not a Roger Waters deal...
"For The Killing of the past,, and Coming back to life!!"
(from memory)...
Beyond the horizons, of the place we lived when we were young,
In a world of magnets,, and miracles...
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the long road and on down the causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river
Forever and ever
These guys are not just poets, and musicians... they are very smart political thinkers... Some would say Prophets...

Love this band, and this album.
The lyrics Jake posted are from the final track "High Hopes" (another great one). Almost hauntingly, it is the last song on their last album.

Another quality track with a strong message (albeit not as deep as the two sets of lyrics already shared on this thread); "Lost for Words":
zPwucFar9kM
I was spending my time in the doldrums
I was caught in a cauldron of hate
I felt persecuted and paralyzed
I thought that everything else would just wait
While you are wasting your time on your enemies
Engulfed in a fever of spite
Beyond your tunnel vision reality fades
Like shadows into the night
To martyr yourself to caution
Is not going to help at all
Because there'll be no safety in numbers
When the right one walks out of the door
Can you see your days blighted by darkness?
Is it true you beat your fists on the floor?
Stuck in a world of isolation
While the ivy grows over the door
So I open my door to my enemies
And I ask could we wipe the slate clean
but they tell me to please go f*** myself
You know you just can't win

Wow, after what you wrote I am exploring/ experiencing the album further. I am listening to the full album (on YouTube) while I type this
I was one of those that listened to Pink Floyd, especially when I was younger and must admit that I had never heard of this album. It fascinates me on how things are revealed to me on my journey.
Just when I think I have a sense of how the journey will go I am surprised once again.
Expect the unexpected, it has been said......
.:: Edit ::.
As for "Coming Back To Life" (keeping with its symbolism of the Sun), I am reminded once again that in this void.....if it wasn't for the Sun, in essence, there is nothing (which can be misunderstood as everything).

Ha! :) My friend, enjoy the journey... (I do!) :)
Here is another one,,, Honestly, i was crying by the time it was over, when i first heard it.. There is a duality in the lyrics.. One character talking to another character,, exposing an internal conflict that is necessary for humanity to move forward,,, (my take on it.... :)) The song is called Poles Apart.... of course.. :)
Did you know... it was all going to go so wrong for you
And did you see it was all going to be so right for me
Why did we tell you then
You were always the golden boy then
And that you'd never lose that light in your eyes
Hey you... did you ever realize what you'd become
And did you see that it wasn't only me you were running from
Did you know all the time but it never bothered you anyway
Leading the blind while I stared out the steel in your eyes
The rain fell slow, down on all the roofs of uncertainty
I thought of you and the years and all the sadness fell away from me
And did you know...
I never thought that you'd lose that light in your eyes
When Gilmore sings out "Hey You!!",, it caused chills... (A clear reference to Roger Waters,)

I can talk Pink Floyd forever.. "Would you like to see Britania rule again, My friend?? All ya need to do is follow the worms!"
Very powerful stuff!!!
Jake.
edit:
For Millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination,, we learned to talk!! (there is a silence surrounding me,,, I can't seem to think straight......
Love it, my friend.... :):)

It's breath taking when people express the journey like this. I find myself in awe....sometimes I wonder how a person can appear to have been on the journey so much longer then I have. It's like I want to catch up with them and walk awhile together while comparing notes (notice). I know this sounds contra to the idea of the 'blind leading the blind' but maybe the 'catching up to them' is really like catching up to myself. Like in sci-fi, traveling in time to talk to my future/ past/ parallel self. Of course we would have to look a little bit different otherwise it could get confusing on who was talking to whom!.......WAIT! Isn't that what I am doing now? :p
Thanks for sharing your Pink Floyd moments with me and you as well Freed Fox (love the name)!

Hi there Pink Floyd lovers :)
Thanks for your interpretations of the music and of the lyric poetry.
I love all the Pink Floyd's music too.
This one I have heard as 'the best Pink Floyd album ever, not made by Pink Floyd'
qS35PVNzpOk
Must be heard, as all good music, through a good surround system with a good subwoofer :)
BTW I have heard there will be a new Pink Floyd album release in October this year.
Cheers Johnny

Thank you for posting this. Some friends and I were at the concert for the debut of this album in Oakland, California back in the early nineties. It was a beautiful night of new Floyd music, underneath a glowing moon peeking in and out of scattered clouds. We purchased the disc and sat down and really listened to the music and the lyrics, which are quite impressive.
High Hopes is a favorite that I post relatively frequently on music forums.
Never underestimate the power of art/music to convey powerful messages to those who will hear. Pink Floyd has always been one of those contributors.
Peace,
Chrys
