How nature sells:

The Foods that Make Billions

The Foods that Make Billions is a series looking at how big business feeds us. Starting with a look at the bottled water industry, moving through cereals and finally looking at yoghurt, these three episodes explore the history of how these simple commodities have become staple products, part of the global diet.
Liquid Gold looks at the competitive dynamics between two of the global leaders in the bottled water marketplace: Nestle and Danone. Episode one unpacks the brand philosophy and big business strategy behind these big hitters in the industry. But why would you buy something that you could get for free from the tap? This documentary looks at the marketing and advertising strategies used by big business to create demand that results in the distribution of millions of bottles of water around the world.

But why would you buy something that you could get for free from the tap?

Because most humans are mentally unbalanced, under mind-control, and extremely ignorant.

My mother is a case example of somebody who buys and drinks bottled water. About four years ago, I bought her and my dad a water filtration system that connects easily onto the kitchen faucet. I gave it to her for Christmas, and I also gave her a list of reasons why supporting the bottled water industry is destructive to the environment, with a list of facts, statistics, and examples on how drinking tap water is actually healthier and less expensive. I even threw in a few metal water bottles with the gift so she would be able to carry water around when she goes places.

I found out two months later that she returned the gift. When I asked her why, she simply said to me: "Drinking bottled water is so much easier, especially when we go camping."

I was dumbfounded, angry, and sad to hear this come from my mother's mouth, let alone another human being. I even gave her storage vessels to carry filtered water from the tap when she goes camping! Unbelievable ignorance. Needless to say, she and I don't have a good relationship, and I intend to keep it that way. I won't waste my time with anybody who is that ignorant.

Sam, I sure hope you have more than this to make you fall out with your mother. I think you may be just a shade intolerant here. Getting on with people one doesn’t see eye to eye with is, I think, one of the difficult tasks we are here to learn, and it often involves getting off one’s high horse on great matters of principle such as tap v. bottled water.

I must be ‘mentally unbalanced, under mind-control, and extremely ignorant’ myself because I occasionally drink bottled water. Why? Because tap water is only free when you’ve paid for it, and it is often undrinkable even after filtering. In other words it contains things that are not too good for me, maybe not fluoride here, but probably too much nitrate and other such stuff. Tap water is a health hazard just as much as bottled is a scam. I prefer to avoid having any principles of this kind because if ignorance is involved it may well be my own, and tolerance, I find, makes the world go round.

My intolerance of her goes above and beyond bottled water, but that is not relevant here.

I didn't intend to label everybody as being the embodiment of ignorance if they drink bottled water, but wanted to make the point that most people don't even care to think about these issues.

You are right in saying that tap water is also hazardous, given that most city water is spiked with fluoride, and perhaps other harmful chemicals. But there are ways to get rid of mercury, fluoride, and other chemicals through certain types of filtration systems. If you drink bottled water, you also have to contend with the leaching of chemicals from the plastic.

The entire water issue is huge in my life, I have two wells, one for garden use at 28 feet deep and another for drinking at 360 feet. I feel it is the only way to insure that you are getting something that is not damaging your body or mind. I also find it appalling that people are willing to pay much more for water than for oil. Plastic water bottles are one of the most hazardous things that we can put into the environment and yet people (most) don't seem to care. Drinking from plastic should come with a warning, "Drink at Your Own Risk". Putting plastic in a microwave should also carry a warning, "Could Cause Cancer or Death".

It is mind boggling that people have bought into to these marketing scams and there seems to be no end in sight. I am not sure what it will take for people to open their eyes and their minds but it certainly is beyond my comprehension.

Sam, on a side note:

Needless to say, she and I don't have a good relationship, and I intend to keep it that way.

I feel there is little doubt that one of the important things that we are put on earth to do is is repair relationships. As hard as it is, we must overcome some of these family issues and find a civil and generous (of heart) way to deal with certain family members. No matter how acidic a relationship can be there is always a way to put it into balance. It generally takes time, much thought and a lot of effort. If for no other reason, you of all people should know that you are destined to repeat this behavior with this soul until "you" (not them) finally get it right. That should be motivation enough!

After all, as you say in your signature:
"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."

I'd have to disagree with part of your comment... coming from someone who is highly chemically sensitive, trust me when I say your Tap Water is not a healthier alternative to bottled water. You'd be stunned at some of the things found in tap water, not to mention the many things they add causing further insult. Granted I fill my water in glass jugs at a spring I know of in the mountains, and completely agree with you in that we need to be aware of environmental impacts, claiming people who consume bottled water are "mentally unbalanced, under mind-control, and extremely ignorant" is simply ridiculous my friend... if not at least a bit dramatic.

Water, starwater, sea water, holy water...trouble is tap water is adulterated with fluoride and other chemicals - people seek the real thing and think it can be got from the bottled natural spring
waters. I think unconsciously that is why people want it, they are thirsty and just want natural water, most tap water tastes awful - this is going to be a priority for my piece of land it must have a spring, or stream
once you have your own source you can maintain your health.

We won't mention the beer companies, who make out like literal bandits.
