I don't think this is a surprise in the current Moscow/Washington testosterone match.
But a three year visa was.

Little is known about Mr Snowden's activities in Russia

Russia has granted fugitive US whistleblower Edward Snowden permission to stay three
more years with the right to travel abroad, his lawyer says.

His year-long leave to stay in Russia had expired on 31 July.

Mr Snowden fled the US in 2013 after leaking details of the National Security Agency's
surveillance and telephone-tapping operations. The US has charged him with theft of
government property and communicating classified information.Mr Snowden's lawyer,
Anatoly Kucherena, told journalists that the request for an extension had been
accepted.

"Accordingly, Edward Snowden was given a three-year residence permit," which will
allow him to move about freely and travel abroad, Mr Kucherena said.

'Man up'

The former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor has been hailed by privacy
activists for revealing the extent of the NSA's surveillance operations and details of
alleged US spying on foreign leaders, including US allies.

The US Congress has since attempted to impose restrictions on the NSA's electronic
surveillance activities. However, US leaders have accused Mr Snowden of damaging
national interests and harming the country's security.

In May, Secretary of State John Kerry said Mr Snowden was a fugitive from justice
who should "man up" and return home.

Mr Snowden had fled the US via Hong Kong in May 2013.

He remained in a transit zone in Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport for more than a
month after the US revoked his travel documents, before being granted temporary
asylum in Russia in August 2013.

Russia's decision to shelter Mr Snowden was strongly criticised by the US.

Little is known about his activities in Russia, although his lawyer says he is working
as an "IT specialist" and as a rights defender.

Mr Kucherena stressed on Thursday that Mr Snowden had not been granted
asylum, but "temporary leave to remain on the territory of Russia," Interfax news
agency reports.

"In the future Edward will have to decide whether to continue to live in Russia and
become a citizen or to return to the United States," he said.

"Little is known about Mr Snowden's activities in Russia"- little is known about Snowden whatsoever, assuming he's just "one person" and is not a photo-shopped individual (pretty milk-toast looking, don't you think?- gosh- how convenient) representing a whole group of individuals trying to accomplish something positive (well, maybe, if they're not shills)-

anyway, I've never bought the story the 'Snowden-group' is in Russia; I believe he/they are much closer (we're always told to look far away instead of right under our noses); it would not surprise me in the least if this 'entity'/group is in Switzerland;

to my knowledge Switzerland does have an extradition treaty with the US but if Roman Polanski can avoid extradition to the US from Switzerland than I can only assume others have the same status if enough money is paid; Switzerland is THE banking/money country in the world; no-one can convince me Snowden/his group can continue without mega financing so who could possibly be backing him?-

I don't have the answer but I still continue to believe the "Snowden Group" represented by a milk-toast looking man (how convenient) is NOT in Russia but right under our noses, very possibly in Switzerland;

I think you might be a little harsh on him , he seems genuine to me and I have
listened to a lot of articles about him on the main Edward Snowden thread.

He had backing from wiki leaks and the Guardian and the other papers
who published the material .I expect they have been funding him in
Russia with whatever saving he may have been able to take with him.
I don't know that, just speculating, he did say he would look for a job
in IT if he stayed in Russia long term. Anything is possible but he would
of had to fool the people who have helped him and the Russian authorities.
I think he did it for the reasons he claims, but only time will tell.
