'Normally, I see rocks as rocks,' said one commenter, 'This can't be a thigh bone, can it?'

More than two years into the Curiosity rover’s lonely trek across Mars, conspiracy theorists
believe they have struck gold: an ‘alien thigh bone’ has been spotted on the surface of the
red planet.

For keen alien hunters, the image above - taken by the rover’s MastCam on August 14 – is proof that large animals once roamed Mars, possibly even dinosaurs.

“Simply put this shows that there were some living things on the Mars (sic),” asserts an anonymous editorial writer at Northern Voices Online, while the popular site UFO Blogger compares the find to previous images of a “fossilized, reptilian spine” and a “human finger”.

The regularity of these ‘finds’ is of course testament not to the once-flourishing wildlife of Mars, but to the human brain’s remarkable capacity to spot patterns in random noise.

This was a handy trait for our ancestors when identifying a potential predator among the primeval foliage, but in modern times it’s more likely to lead only to those little ‘huh’ moments when we spot a face in some inanimate object.

Of course, there is some truth to conspiracy theorists’ hopes of life on Mars, with scientists pointing out last year that the asteroid impact that killed of the dinosaurs could have flung rocks carrying organic matter to the red planet some 66 million years ago.

Unfortunately, at this point (and for roughly 3 billion years prior) Mars was a barren place with no flowing water. However, if the microorganisms from Earth had hitched a ride to somewhere a little more hospitable, like Europa then it could be a different matter altogether.

And of course, NASA's official explanation is that "It's just a rock until proven otherwise"...

NASA is the acronym for "Never A Straight Answer". :p

Both modern science and modern religion are failures. So it's no surprise NASA always sides on the closed minded towards ET life. I do wonder how many in NASA even know the ET reality(the surface anyway). Has to be a lot considering how much they have witnessed in outer space...

I like the prospect of other countries being in space. There lies the possibilities of real disclosure. Like Russia's cosmonaut spilling the beans on youtube with almost 2 million views:
W31Ge-md1oA

Not only a spectacular testimony of ET contact in the russian space station, but also a wealth of UFOs, ET craft in space flying around...

If NASA released the photo it's probably of the agenda to discredit conspiracy theorists. I have seen articles by NASA disputing certain conspiracy theories, which were baseless theories, and making all conspiracy theorists look bad because of the simplicity in which most humans mind's work. So one dimensional and judgmental...

NASA is a disgrace to mankind.

It doesn't look quite right for a thigh bone, but it does sure look like a bone ...

The most likely prognosis though is that it is simply a rock. We're only seeing a 2D image and I don't think it is possible to form conclusions. How it might have formed in that shape is mysterious but then we don't know much about conditions on Mars - could have been wind erosion - we don't know. Maybe Mars once did have an atmosphere which supported large animal life. After all the dinosaurs on Earth were millions of years ago so who knows what could have happened in that time period. On the other hand maybe a few guys from the Mars colony went into the outback for a barbie. I still think it's most likely a rock - sure as hell looks like a bone though.
