am not sure how much this topic will interest most but it has hit me between the eyes;

as I have applied, as a US citizen, for German citizenship (must renounce US citizenship) on March 8th via my district (but have not yet heard anything from 'Berlin' via my district- don't know what the problem is; I'm not a criminal, pay my German taxes, ohh, forget it...)

so I was rather shocked to read (if/IF this report has credulity) this report:

http://rt.com/usa/183972-fee-renounce-us-citizenship/

I'll wait a few weeks to see if the US consulate in Frankfurt (let alone embassy in Berlin) updates it's/their website(s) to substantiate these claims-

if anyone out there in Avalon land-has any experience regarding the subject of renouncing US citizenship, either positive or negative, please inform!

please be well all-

Larry

Mmm wonder if $2350 is the actual book figure of the sovereign debt on each citizen in the US .... before it is monetised. ATM that is..

Just a passing thought...

That is a crazy fee. I'd be curious to see the break down of what it takes US official administration to effect the renouncing of US citizenship. Labor wise I cannot conceive of the justification for that high a fee.

It reminds me of a person throwing a fit at a break-up. "You want to leave ME? Okay then, But it's going to cost you an arm and a leg to leave!"

I say one should be able to renounce the renouncing (fee). ;)

Perhaps you could ask whether you could be paid this fee for your decision to renounce

I guess they see a big wave of disgruntled septics jumping ship.

Not sure if this applies, but American friends have applied for and rec'd Italian citizenship. They didn't renounce their U.S. Citizenship, they are dual nationals. It may be that they haven't let the U.S. know about their 'additional' Italian citizenship, but I'm certain they have both.

@cursichella1

this is the crazy thing about dual citizenships: dual citizenship between Germany/US is not allowed, but dual Swiss/US citizenship (if my info is correct) is allowed for a woman but not a man;

it gets even better: within the European Union, for example, one may have dual German/Greek citizenship (both cultures are so 'similar,' right?), but dual German/Austrian citizenship (both members of the EU and both German-speaking countries) is 'verboten' (forbidden)- this is how insane this whole thing is-

am not sure if dual Italian/US citizenship is possible; "I'm certain they have both": have you ever asked them directly?- if you have, please inform me of their answer- but then tomorrow I will ask my very dear Italian "co-workwoman" if this would be possible...

stay well!

I suspect it has to do with past wars: Germany was against Austria while Italy was on the same side in WW2.

@Snowflower

"I suspect it has to do with past wars: Germany was against Austria while Italy was on the same side in WW2"-

right- all three countries were allied in WW2; so if you are not yet aware of that absolutely BASIC concept I will refrain from commenting farther...
