I've probably watched 200 (around 600 hours) of Joe's pod casts.... I couldn't recommend them more, granted he isn't perfect but he admits it pretty readily and that fact alone makes it so much better.

778- what an enjoyable interview. Great questions and responses about the personal experiences of space. Thank you.

I like Joe and I had actually flagged Hadfield's book on my personal book list but I was only able to make it through the first 14 minutes of this video, even as interesting as it is to hear about changes to the body in zero gravity.
First, Hadfield says the body "naturally" senses the loss of gravity in space and begins to immediately shed calcium and other minerals from the body it doesn't need, leading to the loss of bone mass and other specifically ideal changes to the environment, and admits they have no idea how the body knows this. I was really disappointed they didn't delve deeper into this incredible statement. How would our bodies naturally be able to recognize and adjust for the weightlessness of space, and then back to gravity again, unless we were descended from space traveling creatures or specifically engineered to do so? Yet, they just glossed over it.
Hedfield then goes on to talk about all the things they're working on and inventions that need to be made BEFORE they are able to go to the moon and then to Mars. Aren't we supposed to have already figured out how to get to the moon?
Both men then ridicule the face on Mars and any such people who claim to find structures/objects that suggest intelligent species have already been in place on the moon, Mars and other planets. Hedfield provides the analogy that seeing such things is like laying on your back and finding images in the clouds. Really?!
I guess they haven't seen Buzz Aldrin's C-SPAN interview where he admits there is a monolith that was put on one of Mar's moons? Phobos I think.

It was apparent by listening to both these men that their conversation was completely contained within the box of the Fake Reality Control Matrix (FRCM), which, when dealing with issues of space, is represented by the military agency known as NASA, who absolutely never tell the truth about much of anything of REAL importance. The first 14 minutes seemed like it could be an officially sanctioned NASA presentation.
I thought most here at PA should know there are TWO space agencies: a public one and a secret one. This was totally confined to the public one, which dares not even come close to admitting the truth of anything.
If it got better after 14 minutes and they did step out of the FRCM box, please do be so kind as to let me know.

Here's the deal with almost all bone density loss:
The lack of stress on the bones causes the bones to need less calcium to support the lower levels of stress, this is why almost all elderly women should lift weights, the bone density gained from the added stress of weight lifting is proven to work to reverse osteoporosis. So you can extrapolate this to your above question.
It's not so much that the body "knows" its in zero G, its that the stresses of gravity are absent, and when a stimulant is missing, the reaction to the stimulant is missing also (ie, more dense bones and higher muscle mass from gravity go away).
Hedfield then goes on to talk about all the things they're working on and inventions that need to be made BEFORE they are able to go to the moon and then to Mars. Aren't we supposed to have already figured out how to get to the moon?
go to the moon and "stay" on the moon are quite different; I think that is what he was getting at

Well, I choose to view it like this:
Joe does a great job of keeping the people he interviews comfortable enough to keep talking to him, he's very good at reading audiences.
most the time if you watch the podcast following the one you've watched you'll see him call out the previous guest on his views (not with names, just "this guy was saying this" type of thing).
Anyway, he's not perfect for sure, and influenced by the entertainment industry for sure but he has the access to interview people that I want to see, and he is very honest; that sold me.

Apart from that, it was very very good to hear the man speak about the fragility of our atmosphere and a delight to hear a man of his experience say, that we better be a bit more humble regarding our place in the cosmos and this planet, we are not that important, if the planet throws a tantrum and shakes us of like a bad case flees it will be of no importance whatso ever, despite what we think of ourself, wouldnt it be funny if there were actually ETs or EDs messing with us for reasons we can still only guess about and the planet just decides to fart us all to kingdom come, setting them back a couple of million years without even knowing it had walking, talking experimental alien GMO's living on its surface.

Thanks. I didn't mean to be so snippy. I actually really like what I've heard from both these guys. I just wish we could have these conversations with all the cards on the table and not be confined to "mainstream" understanding of the history/world/universe.

Being an elderly babe, I was amazed because the now elderly astronauts never provided even this information. At that time some folks speculated that the NASA tampered with their memories.
Some astronauts almost vomited when pressed by close friends about their emotional memories. Some felt they had been cheated because of this lack while others went into seclusion.
:(During the 1960s, we believed and trusted our government....

I saw this one previously, but --- excellent interview, Joe did well at bringing out some interesting info from Chris (still less complete than desired), while still being respectable and practical himself. Well done - brilliant episode. Chris Hadfield rocks! (as ridiculously "practical" as he is) ;)
