Monk Luang Pu Pim has told his followers that he is going to effectively meditate
himself to death.

The 65-year-old, believing that it is his time to die, reportedly lay down in a wooden coffin and entered a trance-like state from which he has claimed he will bring about his own demise.

Pim, who is the abbott of Thailand's Wat Weruwan temple, has also stated that in the event that he does die, which he expects will happen as early as Thursday, his body and the coffin it rests in will both spontaneously combust.

The coffin, which has several holes in the sides to enable him to breath, has been placed outside of his living quarters where several of his followers have come to meditate.

His daughter, Chanakarn Srisombat, claims that her father had previously experienced a brush with death when he allegedly died while in a cave but was brought back to life by a miracle.

Exactly what will happen this time however remains to be seen. :flame: http://smileys.smilchat.net/smiley/humor/vil-fourchette.gif

 This ought to be interesting. He's really putting himself out there. I hope it works out for him, and that there's no trickery involved. :flame:

:confused:He wants to die, so I am not quite getting the breathing holes, unless he wants to reincarnate as a dolphin or a whale;)

Since when is suicide an entertainment vehicle?

I think he wants to die naturally by entering into deep samadhi then just leave the body. Not by suffocation.

I'm not sure why it will take so long though ....

He is of sound mind he has a right to die the way he deems fit.
We should be blessed in knowing this

Monk ends death by meditation

Chaiyaphum, Thailand

Local authorities and senior monks in Chaiyaphum have stepped in to prevent a senior monk from “meditating” himself to death in a closed coffin. Phra Khru Weruwan Chantarungsi, 65, widely known as Luang Pu Pim, the abbot of Wat Weruwan in tambon Thung Phra of Khon Sarn district, had told his fellow monks and laymen that he would end his life by getting into a coffin and meditating until he passed away.

But the officials persuaded the abbott to end his fast and enter hospital for treatment. The abbott, also known as Luang Pu Pim, was said to be tired and in a frail condition.Chaiyaphum police chief Pol Maj Gen Pinit Maneerat, accompanied by Phra Ratpawana Warajarn, the province’s ecclesiastical leader, and government and medical officials, showed up at the temple at about 3pm to negotiate with Luang.

The atmosphere was reportedly tense as the monk’s many disciples, along with thousands of followers who had gathered in the temple grounds since Tuesday morning, would not allow the group to enter his living quarters. Earlier, Luang Pu Pim had ordered them not to let anyone in while he was lying down and meditating in the coffin.

It should be about that way no ? End 'death by meditation' not 'mediation by death' .

I think they would keep it secret otherwise ... that's my intuition but also experience from within the monastic communities in the East,
there are masters who can perform extraordinary feats now n then but if that's the case there's also extraordinary inner security preventing the word to slip out and outsiders to spoil the moment .

This story seems to have bit of everything .. and also shows that todays Thailand is much more controlled and safeguarded type of society than it used to be in past ,
it looks they did all to prevent a pubic show and I think they did well .

Thanks for posting Skywizard

You must be blessed with a teevee-free life. All death is entertainment in America, home of the brave (...except in the case of fear of death), has been as long as I've been alive.

I think we are suppose to feel that he has a higher purpose and what he is doing is noble but in my mind it is a foolish act of a unstable man. Many people take their lives everyday and very few call attention to themselves in the process. Just because he is from Asia, calls himself a monk does not mean that he was excluded from mental illness or the apparent insanity he is suffering from. Blessing a porsche (for money) should have been a tip off!

I don't think about it in those terms .. if you read the articles carefully, they admit he's been ill for quite many years and felt 'his life came to the term ..' .
65 year old, father of two , monastery abbot , living simple life .. I can imagine he wanted to make grandiose leave and it did not pan just right ..
especially for all the crowds who would come to stand a witness - and it's all against the Buddhist rules to do such a thing for a show,
unless you're considered 'the awakened one' and then again, it's against the rules to consider yourself anything close to Buddha , especially in Theravada countries .

I'm sure there's some pretty sad and personal story behind it all ..

what he should have realised earlier is that attracting attention of authorities will spoil the miracle .

If he's ill and they're able to help him then good . Many monks do not seek treatment even when ill ( especially in case of chronic conditions that would require care and money ) and they don't have social care/retirement system as we do.

People pointing fingers to someone living in country where many can't afford standard medical care is not easy ..

The one with Porsche was not him :

A businessman's request to have his brand-new Porsche blessed in a temple in the city of Xiaogan, in eastern China's Hubei province, has really caused anger across the country

He said he wasn't trying to kill himself, he said he just knew when he was supposed to die and wanted to make it a spectacle. But now it's called off. So I guess he'll die another day. These things apparently are flexible? But he will die soon, according to him, on intentionally or not.
