Excerpts:
This week headlines about GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) splashed all over major media outlets across the country. This media firestorm was in response to a new report released by Consumer Reports regarding GMOs in American food products. This report finally shared what I have thought all along: Non-labeled food products most likely contain GMOs if the ingredients include a corn or soy byproduct.

One of the most shocking things that Consumer Reports uncovered is that Xochitl Totopos de Maiz original corn chips (the non-organic variety) contain on average more than 75% GMO corn, although they claim right on the front of the bag that they contain no GMOs.

I was in the grocery store, and they were selling the EXACT same broccoli in the organic section as the non organic. I know the difference. Organic vegis do have a different appearanc
It was the exact same product. Yet the organically labeled broccoli was 4 dollars a head, instead of 1.88. I went home without broccoli that day. LOL

From the report sited in the article above (http://www.greenerchoices.org/pdf/CR_FSASC_GMO_Final_Report_10062014.pdf):

Consumer Reports tested over 80 different processed foods with corn or soy ingredients for GE DNA. We tested popular breakfast cereals, bars, corn chips, corn tortillas, baking mixes and flours, meat substitutes, soy “dairy” products, and tofu/tempeh products.

So they only checked for GMO corn or soy.... not to mention any other GMO ingredients like artificial sweeteners, "natural" sweeteners like beet sugar, GMO fruits and byproducts (ex: apples/ fruit fiber/pectin) and etc.

It is truely mindboggling when you start making a list of ingredients that are GMO... I think I'd starve if I lived in the US right now... I have enough difficulty getting around GMO's in Italy as it is; and yes, there are lot's of ingredients (not necessarily base ingredients) in food in Italy... per ex: corn starch is not regulated... it can and usually is imported and is largely GMO.

Add: Too bad they didn't publish the percentages of GMO genes they discovered.... instead of just generalizing and tagging products based on the 0.9% permitted by the certificating org. Nonetheless, good article and experiment.
