You can't eat a hammer either :).

A variety of tools, resources, skills, ... can be useful, even essential, in various situations.

One scenario that I recommend we all consider is how we would adapt if the US Dollar is dramatically declining in value, but trading is still occurring ... not just very localized bartering (my extra biscuit for your extra butter) ... but also larger scale trading of many things and services, continuing to use various forms of "money" both as (1) an intermediate unit of exchange (I sell my biscuit today to one person and buy your butter from you the next day), and as (2) a store of "saved" value intended for use in future trading.

With this, so long as governments continue to rule over us and impose taxes and fees on us for the "right" to stay out of their prisons and the "right" to continue to use our property and possessions, we also need to consider how we would adapt in a situation of sharply shifting exchange rates between the forms of money that we had saved, that we were collecting as income from work or any continuing government "benefits" and the forms of money that we needed to keep the government off our back, engage in trade, and save a reserve.

The people of Argentina (and many other nations) will have more experience with such situations than the people of the USA :).

Personally, I have a hammer, a saw, a coat, shoes, rice and beans, a packet of seeds, spare computers and computer parts, backup electricity means, and a silver coin or two ... as well as good health and a fully owned roof over my head.

This doesn't cover all options. If a Mad Max situation occurs, a younger man, more skilled in martial arts or better equipped with knives and guns, will have my rice and beans. In a Noah's Ark situation, I have no boat and weak swimming skills - I'm outa' here.

The key messages regarding gold are that (1) for us Americans in particular, the US Dollar is coming to the end of its usefulness as a (quasi-)stable unit of exchange that has been accepted for generations in the US and (2) the world's monetary system is entering another shift of its foundational reserve unit, from the US Dollar to some mix of other currencies, metals and traded goods.
