Immersive, highly visual, 3D environments are now on the horizon after British scientists managed to recreate mid-air sensory experiences by controlling sound waves to project 3-D haptic holograms that can be seen and felt.

A team from the University of Bristol’s Interaction and Graphics research group, using the UltraHaptics, a system for creating haptic feedback in mid-air, were successful in testing several shapes, including spheres and pyramids.

“Touchable holograms, immersive virtual reality that you can feel and complex touchable controls in free space are all possible ways of using this system,” Dr Ben Long, Research Assistant from the Bristol Interaction and Graphics (BIG) group in the Department of Computer Science, said."

the Earth human on the verge of creating life , one more step in evolution and science ... ten years ago this idea would have been science fiction ... imagine the hidden technology they say is 100 years or so ahead of what we are shown ... it's looking grim for those behind 911 , a hologram you can touch , next a hologram you can hear, then one you can feel the heat from ... you know where I'm going ...

:) putting one's hand in a standing wave has been done for years..

Putting laser light in standing waves was done in 1990 - light bends so it appears.. (I actually used to play with that acoustic/laser image creation back then to calibrate my holographic audio-lab.)

I think it's a good thing anytime a school or other such institution shares what it has learned.
When enough pieces are shared, knowledge is like Legos -- everything fits somewhere.

With luck, people will benefit from this technology without having to pay a lot for it.
It's easy to get caught up in the corporate mindset of pooh-poohing the competition,
but competition is healthy.

To a point. :(

Next step; replicators...

Hmmm, I wonder if we will have torrent's for replicator goods.
