The Spy/espionage theme is as old as literature and James Bond is a international
symbol of keeping secrets for national security for Queen and country etc. Which
every country does and are always trying to get the upper hand with each other
whether industrial , political or defence related. With Wiki leaks and Snowden the
extent of how this has advanced in the digital era has become public and by and
large most people are apathetic to it as its something that has always gone on , and
trust our spies are the good guys......
Anyway I have been watching some old series and one I noticed was by J J
Abrahams the new Gene Roddenberry and his team of writers and contacts has
given some good concepts technical ideas from the world of espionage. Most of the
story lines and characters are silly and improbable, but for a throw away spy series
like mission impossible or The Man from U.N.C.L.E ( before many of your
time ..LOL ) It is quite entertaining if you are in the mood for this type of thing......
The reason I'm posting this is obvious with what we know in hindsight and this
episode was made in 2002/3. The series started in 2001 pre 9/11 and although
not mentioned directly so far. The Patriot Act and its powers has been in a earlier
episode.
They talk about Echelon at the start and talk about it thru the episode , there are
other sub plots and story lines going on and like most TV shows of this kind its
all gun ho and kick ass. In the first few minutes it explains Echelon and its status
including references to Big Bros and violations of the constitution.....
