View Full Version : Russia wants to collect the DNA of every creature

"Institutions have already been amassing huge DNA collections to catalog the world's creatures, but Moscow State University might just top them all. It's planning to build "Noah's Ark," a repository for the genes of every creature, living or extinct -- as long as the genes are readable, they'll either be cryogenically frozen or stored as pure data. Not surprisingly, it's going to be a massive undertaking in more ways than one. The Russian government is spending the equivalent of $194 million on the facility, which should occupy an enormous 166 square miles when it's finished in 2018.
The collection won't just be about bragging rights. The university hopes to spur on a younger generation of scientists, and the Ark will connect to other genetic facilities both across Russia and (hopefully) the world. If all goes smoothly, researchers will always have a way to compare genes and even clone animals that are difficult or impossible to find in the wild."

The race is sadly expensive . This should be one open access international projects , for all mankind perusal .

There's a botanical seed bank in the UK with every seed in the world. Just saying. As a gardener? That's like...plant porn to me.
This is not, however, like plant porn. It's more like Putin aka Chop Suey, Galactic Emperor. ;)

And when you say that Earth was once partially seeded from such ark there are still people alive who will laugh at you loudly ;)

In the horrendously stupid movie 2012 the global superpowers were bulding massive arcs for humans and animals. Recently they (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5dBZDSSky0) have been giving us subliminal messages about floods, when the planet is getting more extreme weather (and heading to mini ice age)... So go figure.

I think it's a Big Project actually , at least for 10 000 years . Good rough esteem . If you mean it seriously .
Then you need to do such a project with great vision for the Planet Earth and its Future .
In 10 000 years there will be maybe no russia , no america , no southern sea or northern sea .
Antarctic may be a green Island and two rings of ice may form again above and bellow equatorial tropic zones , in another words .. there may come new long ice age .
Till then , also these continents may reshape themselves in unexpected manner . This is what happens on your Class 2-B Planet till it's much older , maybe too old to survive us all .
People have to be ready to move when Big Cataclysmic or Climatic Changes occur in future ,
if they move .. south or north .. they survive . If they stay they perish .
That's why it is important to embrace this issue globally .
Because natural catastrophes are bound to happen on planet like this , since it's young planet ..
The movie Riku posted is actually , one good example how it may-not work , in fiction .
Peace
