Hi all
Here is the famous Drake equation, This equation estimates that the probable intelligent life living on other planets in our Milky Way is about 10,000 planets.
Lots of maths here but some may find it interesting...

Hi Ross,
Thanks for putting the information about the Drake Equation up. Many people are not aware of it. Personally I feel the true number is at least 10,000 (in this galaxy). Unfortunately I don't recommend anyone to actually utilizing the Drake Equation in a debate or discussion with a "Lone Earth" science type. Why? Because there has been so much effort put in to proving "why" the equation is faulty that you would really just be setting up a straw man for these types to knock down.
The best way to elucidate to skeptics the true nature of the Universe, is to let them know that its fairly well known among astrophysicist that there are more stars in just the KNOWN universe, than there are grains of sand on every beach on Earth. Tell someone that when they are sitting on the beach letting sand fall through their fingers. Then let them know that almost every star we look at with any discernment seems to have PLANETS around it!
The known creation is simply unfathomable. In one centimeter of sky, Hubble has imaged over 10 thousand galaxies--each of which could have 600 billion to 1 trillion stars a-piece. Personally, I shiver in excitement when I hear such things. Simple reasoning tells me that everything than CAN happen....WILL happen when dealing with such numbers.

Rather low estimate.
The Majorion equation is about 10,000,000 advanced civilizations per galaxy. :)

It all depends on what data you put into Drake's equation: Number of habitable worlds and civilization "detectability window" lenght being ones that are most disputed.
Now we are ending our window now, after some sixty years (100 if you count only radio) .. much faster than previously expected. SETI is not happy with that to be sure :P I would also wonder how heliosphere affects the signal. Relativistic speeds, radio or not do not seem effective way to acomplish anything anyway. There must be some "other" way out of here :)
