Did you know that you should not put a bottle of Round Up in your municipal trashcan for pick up? If that is the case, then why on Earth would we put that same chemical trash into our bodies?

Yep – Round Up, Monsanto’s favorite herbicide and one of their best-selling products, is considered a Hazmat issue for local cities and towns. It isn’t supposed to be disposed of in your regular trash pick-up. According to the Department of Public Works, “Employees can be harmed by their toxic fumes.”

Monsanto’s Round Up is in the same category for trash removal as paint, paint thinner, furniture polish, mercury, swimming pool chemicals, CFL and fluorescent light bulbs, and antifreeze.

I certainly wouldn’t eat antifreeze, would you? I know that question may sound a bit insulting, but how is it then that we allow (through the voting process and complicit agreement) the EPA to hike up allowable glyphosate (the main ingredient in Round Up) levels? They’ve done it not once, but multiple times.

Now – the allowed level in teff animal feed is 100 parts per million (ppm); and in [GM] oilseed crops, 40 ppm. Allowed levels in some fruits and vegetables eaten by humans have also risen.

As a comparison, malformations in frog and chicken embryos were documented by Prof Andres Carrasco’s team at 2.03 ppm glyphosate (when injected into the embryos).

We also know that glyphosate exposure boosts harmful bacterial growth in the gut and eliminates healthful bacteria – making our body’s own trash eliminator – the GI tract – highly compromised.

Dr. Krüger explains in the study’s abstract:

“During the last 10-15 years, an increase of Clostridium botulinum associated diseases in cattle has been observed in Germany. . . The normal intestinal microflora is a critical factor in preventing intestinal colonisation by C. botulinum as shown in the mouse model of infant botulism. . . . A reduction of LAB in the GIT microbiota by ingestion of strong biocides like glyphosate could be an explanation for the observed increase in levels of C. botulinum associated diseases.

In the present paper, we report on the toxicity of glyphosate to the most prevalent Enterococcus spp. in the GIT. Ingestion of this herbicide could be a significant predisposing factor that is associated with the increase in C. botulinum mediated diseases in cattle.”

Remember – you should contact your local authorities when you are going to dispose of Round Up, even an empty bottle. But we keep spraying it on our food – no worries there.

Its so dangerous I am not even allowed to buy weed killer for treating my lawn anymore - my province has banned it for being too toxic for household use -- only allowed on food crops now. ;)

Your government has a tad more sense than mine, although I wonder why it is ok for food crops? I watch my neighbors spray their yards, fruit trees and gardens with gallons of the stuff.Rather than bending over and pulling out a weed they exert the same amount of energy spraying it with Roundup. I have asked my neighbors if they are concerned about it getting in the groundwater and into our wells and they look at me as if I am a crazy, eccentric nutcase.

Roundup hurts hearts

There could be as many as five million agricultural workers in the developing world who suffer an episode of pesticide poisoning each year. Some of these are accidental and some are, sadly, due to attempted suicide. In these latter cases, death is strongly associated with high blood glyphosate levels. Glyphosate is, of course, the active ingredient of Roundup herbicide used on, and accumulated by, GM 'Roundup Ready' crops.

Roundup intoxication commonly leads to heart malfunction. Anecdotal evidence from hunters describe rabbits dying suddenly after crossing a Roundup-sprayed field, and pet owners have described dogs dying of seizures after exposure to Roundup-sprayed lawns.

Despite these, Roundup's benign image remains intact [1]. But the evidence that the herbicide is far from physiologically inert is mounting.
The latest published Roundup toxicity study sought to explain the link between the herbicide and cardiac function problems.

A French team, led by Steve Gress, investigated what happened when strips of rat and rabbit heart, stimulated to contract by electrical impulses, were exposed to Roundup or its active ingredient, glyphosate. The herbicide used was 'Roundup Ultra' which is freely available in France and which has 36% glyphosate plus 16% of an undeclared adjuvant added to increase the effectiveness of the glyphosate.

What they found was that glyphosate on its own had no effect. Roundup, however, progressively and irreversibly impaired the contractile function of the heart tissue. Further investigations of the mechanism of Roundup damage suggested that the vital flow and exchange of metal ions (sodium, calcium and potassium) in the heart cells was being blocked.

OUR COMMENT

The picture suggested by these findings is that the adjuvants added to Roundup to breach plant protective structures so that the glyphosate can penetrate into the plant cells and kill them, are also able to compromise the integrity of animal cell membranes. Glyphosate, which is inert if kept outside the cell, is thus brought into contact with the cells' metal ions which it binds and immobilises. Roundup's active ingredient may not kill the heart cells, but it could be destroying their function and kill the animal.

The concentrations of Roundup and glyphosate used in this experiment modelled those found in the blood passing through the heart of a suicide or accidental poisoning victim, and was much higher than levels used in routine agriculture. Much of the world's population now seems to be drip-fed Roundup and glyphosate in their food, water and environment [2], but surely the odd dysfunctional heart cell resulting from chronic low-level exposure won't kill anyone.

Or will it?

Bear in mind that:
Exposure to Roundup and glyphosate starts in the womb and continues throughout life [3]
Our exposure to Roundup is steadily rising due to increasing commercialisation of Roundup Ready food and feed crops, due to increased spraying of such GM crops in response to emerging Roundup-resistant weeds, and due to regulators who have no qualms about setting a maximum residue level (MRL) to suit farmers' desire to spray rather than to safeguard consumers.
The damaging effect of Roundup on heart cells found in Gress's experiment was irreversible, and therefore cumulative over time.
No one's going to keel over from heart-failure after eating a few lentils dried down with Roundup, but a lifetime of Roundup gnawing away at your heart cells could be a part of the oddly parallel increase in heart disease and Roundup application now showing up in America [4].

We urgently need in-depth scientific testing of the effects of chronic exposure to Roundup on all organ systems, and clinical trails. Keep asking for it.
