The very common Ayurvedic herb ashwagandha has been studied and has been documented to reverse Alzheimer disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. In the link below to Pubmed, check out study #4:
Withania somnifera reverses Alzheimer's disease pathology by enhancing low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein in liver.
Abstract
A 30-d course of oral administration of a semipurified extract of the root of Withania somnifera consisting predominantly of withanolides and withanosides reversed behavioral deficits, plaque pathology, accumulation of β-amyloid peptides (Aβ) and oligomers in the brains of middle-aged and old APP/PS1 Alzheimer's disease transgenic mice. It was similarly effective in reversing behavioral deficits and plaque load in APPSwInd mice.....

Where to get the stuff? It's probably anywhere you get herb extracts. I get mine in extract form from a company in Washington state. It's run by an incredible woman who grows most of her own plants and has the highest integrity.

wow I want it!
You can have them ...something like this ...
http://www.indiaabundance.com/shopping/sp191_pr1692/Organic_Ashwagandha_Capsules_(Withania_Somnifera).html
I would also recommend Brahmi ( Baccopa Monnieri , not Gotu Cola or Cetenaria Asiatica , they call the two Brahmi at times but not the same herb )
for brain work , it's generally given to school kids .. instead what you feed some here for ADHS , as memory and intelligence enhancer , it promotes good sleep and keeps mood up as well .
It's best found in the Sankhapushpi syrup , such as here :
http://ayurvedashopee.com/?product=dabur-shankhpushpi
The best time to take these 'tonics' is spring and autumn , or according to necessity .. there are very few if any harmful effects , none that i'd observe.

Research or not, some people just will not consider using this kind of medicine. A close friend has been stricken with Alzheimer dementia. I actually handed her a bottle of ashwagandha, but she wasn't interested. Then her husband was telling me the difficulties of watching her suffer, and I once again told him about the stuff and what it can do. I told him to think about it and call me if he wanted some, and he has never called.
There are those who need to live out the disease, for whatever reason. All I can do is respect their decision. The course of their life is their own choice, not mine.

Hi Lindyloo
Some people will not consider taking any herbal medicines. It's the way they've been programmed.
It is a terrible condition and particularly hard on carers.
I cared for both my parents and thank God that they both had full mental faculties right to the end of their lives.
Alzheimers affects not only memory but also one's decision making, and that's maybe why she refused it.
Well done for trying.
