The US military has been given software which can create fake online social media personas.
These accounts are used to “create false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and other commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objective”.
They may not be controlling the internet directly, but such covert manipulation of online conversations is just as destructive, and worlds more deceitful.

"which can create fake online social media personas."
In my opinion all social media accounts are "fake" :).
It is us humans the ones who assume there is "reality" behind a username and a password. In truth we have no idea who/what is on the other end.
Anyone (military or not) can create any number of accounts they want. Not to mention that there are software applications that allow you to post content on social networks without ever opening facebook (or similar) :). What does this mean? It means that one so call "real person" can manage a lot more than 10 so called "fake personas", by using a single application. And that is what is possible in the public domain.
Is best to always keep in mind that when you are online you are first taking to a computer software and there is no guarantee that at the other end is a so called "real persona" or if there is a human being at all.
And to check the sources of everything you read. Most often than not you will see they are not listed or point to bogus sites. In that case you can safely ignore the text.
Here is just one service that offers centralized social media presence: https://www.ubervu.com/about/ (but you can build your own if you have the resources and the required skills).

The real question might not be "why?", but rather "why not?" It makes perfect sense to me why they would do that. Wouldn't you, if your goal was to guide social opinion, form conventional wisdom, and manufacture consent?
