This is the chilling moment a mysterious hairless creature chews its way through a steel cage.

The description for the unsettling video - uploaded to YouTube last week by Raymond Yeung – claims it was captured in the Shenzhen Reservoir in China's Sand Bay.

The clawed creature - which some say is a rare bear - can be seen aggressively biting through the cage with a visibly bleeding mouth before ripping the metal wire apart with its limbs.

The vision has fuelled heated debates around the species of the ambiguous beast, with a string of different accounts coming to light.

According to the video description, the animal was discovered swimming in Shenzhen Reservoir in China's Sand Bay.

It was reportedly fished out of the water by workers from the Department of Drainage, who later captured the animal in a steel cage.

The clip has sparked heated debates on Chinese social media site WeiBo, with some users claiming it depicts a 'water monster' from Chinese folklore.

Other users alluded to the creature being impacted by pollution, with Shenzhen Reservoir being recently deluged with toxic sewerage that turned parts of the region blood red.

Some claimed it was in fact a Malaysian Bear who was suffering from alopecia, a disease which causes baldness.

A similar video surfaced in January of an ailing sun bear in Borneo island in Malaysia, which had been beaten by local plantation workers and driven into the bush.

It was reported this month that the animal was discovered at another nearby plantation, where it is being nursed back to health.

David Neal, the director of Animals Asia, told Daily Mail Australia the caged animal 'looks like a bear cub which is suffering from some medical condition which has caused it to loose all of its fur.'

While he was unable to confirm if it was the same bear from the Borneo clip, he said he suspects it is and that the footage originates from Borneo not China.
A heavily-polluted field in Shenzhen Reservoir, where the mystery beats was apparently captured, has fuelled accusations the animal may have been contaminated

Don't know what that is but, boy, those are some claws. Doesn't exactly look like a steel cage. It's pretty small gauge wire.
When I was in 3rd grade we got a golden retriever from the pound. She had been given up because she was an escape artist. Until we got our fence finished she was put in a chain link fence pen with a dog house in it. First day I came home from school and there she was in the yard waiting. She had got on the dog house and jumped over the fence. We removed the dog house and the next day from school I got home and there she was in the front yard waiting. I went back to see how she had escaped and noticed she had eaten through the chain link fence. I kid you not. It was gnawed, bent, scratched...clear evidence of an animal frantically getting free. Her teeth and gums were fine. She lived a long, wild and adventurous life and just could not ever be contained.
Still, what the heck this creature is, I don't know, but it does not want to be kept in that cage and I hope they had a backup plan. ;)

The only thing I see here is how cruel and hideous we humans can be.

My guess is that it is a species of three-toed sloth that has lost its hair. Poor baby, from toxic river to nasty cage. Hope she has found a better environment to live in.

Doesn't look alien at all, it looks utterly terrestrial, and frankly any one of us could chew through those wire bars if one so desired... it's not exactly an extraordinary feat.

The claws and body look like those of a Sloth but the face looks longer like that of a bears. If it is a bear then it's a malnourished infant, as it's far too small to be an adult.

Regardless, the title is misleading, ridiculously and unnecessarily sensationalist.

The poor thing bloodied it's own mouth and exhausted itself, bless its soul...
What kind of being would trap something and watch it suffer and struggle to get out. I'm guessing the person filming this is the real "New Type" of animal.
