Wow, that seems to be quite big, close to M8.
Also a moment ago there was M5.5 near New Zealand.

Poor Japan. No tsunami threat which is good.

I was at the Sky Tree talking with about 20 people. The kids were a bit freaked out.
Getting mixed reports here. One report saying 9.1 and aborher saying 8.5
We were in full view and directly under the Sky Tree.
Anyway 10 mins later after the long swaying stopped the massive line of people continued to form a long Q, to go to the top of the Sky Tree.. That's just so Japan .. The ground was shaking for over 5 mins. Really was a long one. But a swaying one. Hard to tell how it felt on normal ground as we were on ground that's stabilized with movement construction to take away the shock earthwuakes can produce.
Lots of volcanic activity happening here also.

Yes exactly, I was wondering the same but I think it was that deep that it was felt throughout the whole of Japan but not enough impact or shallow enough to even cause a slight tsunami.
What's strange is that the whole of Japan felt this one. It is being reported that's it 8.5
Something is niggling me about the volcanic hush and activity and why are all the readings on this earthquake different?

Me too. It was very deep. And all that volcanic activity implies something going on deep. Why there was no tsunami (or they tend to put one out briefly until confirmed no). There still can be areas where water can flood inland and be channeled inward. Japan's pretty savvy with those things. I haven't seen the bouey information but I bet the ocean is shaking too.
Unfortunately, because it is deep we will see compensation movement. Like Russia farther north. China even. All directions the pressure waves through. Experts were expecting more displacement in the Nepal area before this one. Hope this does't worsen this. Those quakes that follow tend to be more surface oriented. Not seeing aftershocks yet but this quake just happen and I follow the bigger quakes myself.
Why do they give such different readings? It frustrates me and they keep changing things. Makes it hard to study. I know some people do get frightened but I don't think that is most people. Most people would prefer to be warned. Just my opinion. I can think of other reasons like old equipment but I don't buy that because it is delicate but they last awhile. Little maintenance.
I don't make the same statement with a 50 year old neutron monitor that gets pretty beat up. I expect glitches there more. And human do err too. Let's factor that in.

When Mercury goes retrograde information is difficult. Either it's disinformation or information missing. Weather and stockmarket are unpredictble, delays when travelling, computers crashing. Of course all these phenomena have their own cause and effect astrology shows the time when these will manifest cyclically.

Ineresting that SuspiciousObservers noticed this earthquake occurred within the exact minute of Mercury conjoining the sun. Not the first time I heard that with Mercury.
