View Full Version : In a view seconds. Phonetic typos on Avalon

Hi All
Ok... I could make this thread another poll... but for the sake of not outstaying my welcome around here, polls can quickly become tiresome. Especially if it's the same originator all the time !
Cut to the chase. Any of you find yourself making phonetic typos? That is, typing a word that sounds like the one you wanted to use, rather than a simple slip of the keys.
I don't think about this one too much, but I saw mu1243's post of a 'view seconds' on the microwave thread and it made me think (instead of a few seconds) that it's not the sort of word you confuse - a few and view.
But I quite often get these in my head when posting. Sure ones like are and our or there and their are common... but the less obvious ones like view and few are very interesting.
I wonder if it's something to do with the way we process the info as we write. But I never experienced it before Avalon.
If you have any thoughts or illumination on this, I'd be interested to here

At the beginning of my travels through the not-so-material knowledge I found a source that seemed quite legit and decided to write a mail to that person ..
while writing I must have let my mind wander a bit, as while I re-read it, there was "not a friend" inserted in one sentence .. I decided to ignore that, though, on long run that bit validated itself ..
So I do watch for what typos I am making and where :)

My favorite phonetic typo:
A country lady I know calls Alzheimer's "Old-timer's Disease".

I have written an alliteration which covers the 6 most ill-used words in both chat, and on forums.
See how many people you know can write/spell this correctly, when said to them out loud:
They're to take their two terriers there, too.
Could probably make a fortune with in in "bar bets".
A knee whey, aye diegress. Ewe wooden be in to rested en sum of watt passes four come-in speech nowadays.

I used to deliver a pictorial email every Christmas season to friends.
Four lines of cute animal pics, and then the translation
Wee fish, Ewe, A mare, egrets, Moose.
Wee fish, Ewe, A mare, egrets, Moose.
Wee fish, Ewe, A mare, egrets, Moose.
And a Hippo gnu year.
All done.
Fred
Afterthought:
If the hippo takes up too much room on the card, you can simply use a picture of a baby hippo's ear.
"And a hippo's new ear."
(groan)

Ahem. I proofread for a living so I don't even want to get started on this one. On the other hand, I'd be out of a job if everyone knew which "there" they're wanting to use in their sentence. So three cheers for typos!

Hello Kulapops
Not exactly a typo but an old neighbour of mine used to use many malapropisms my favourite being: “I see the council are cutting the grass virgins again …”

same/ different word catagories -
phonogram: rhyming (ball, fall, tall..)
homograph: same spelling and sound- different meaning (can: able to / a container)
*some homographs are also heteronyms: same spelling- different pronunciation and meaning ( close [s=z] = shut, close [s=s] = near)
homophone: same sound - different spelling and meaning (ate / eight, no / know)
synonym: different words - same meaning (happy, glad, pleased)
antonym: words that mean opposite (up/down, in/out)
idiom: phrases of intent (cough up some money, get the ball rolling, everyone stick together, bent over backwards)
oxymoron: contradictory words used together (pretty ugly, inside out, act naturally, exact estimate)
simile: comparing 2 things using “as” and “like” (as cold as ice, eats like a pig)
metaphor: comparing 2 things using descriptive phrase instead of as/like (the night is young, his stomach was a bottomless pit, legs turned to rubber)
and be sides that...

I wonder if the same is true for our preposterous stories on Avalon? That is, if the first fact is true, and the last fact is correct, all the information in the middle can be complete tosh, and we'll still make sense of the whole thing (or believe it)
;)
