Canadian scientists are protesting Canadian(Harper) government to control scientific research.

One of my friend who works governmental founded research center, claims one of his coworkers found out that, energy drinks cause voltage sensitive 1 gene defection. Canada Department of Health seized all data and prohibited further investigation because it caused wasting research founds.

Voltage-sensitive ion channels mediate action potentials in electrically excitable cells and play important roles in signal transduction in other cell types. In the past several years, their protein components have been identified, isolated, and restored to functional form in the purified state. Na+ and Ca2+ channels consist of a principal transmembrane subunit, which forms the ion-conducting pore and is expressed with a variable number of associated subunits in different cell types. The principal subunits of voltage-sensitive Na+, Ca2+, and K+ channels are homologous members of a gene family. Models relating the primary structures of these principal subunits to their functional properties have been proposed, and experimental results have begun to define a functional map of these proteins. Coordinated application of biochemical, biophysical, and molecular genetic methods should lead to a clear understanding of the molecular basis of electrical excitability.

The Halifax-based scientist, who only agreed to talk to CBC after he retired from the department, says federal scientists have been working in a climate of fear.

"I am concerned about the bigger policy issues that are essentially leading to a death spiral for government science," he said in an exclusive interview.

"I see that is going to be a huge problem in the coming years. We are at the point where the vast majority of our senior scientists are in the process of leaving now disgusted as I am with the way things have gone, and I don't think there is any way for it to be recovered."

What is the official name of the CLCN1 gene?
The official name of this gene is “chloride channel, voltage-sensitive 1.”
CLCN1 is the gene's official symbol. The CLCN1 gene is also known by other names, listed below.

What is the normal function of the CLCN1 gene?

The CLCN1 gene belongs to the CLC family of genes, which provide instructions for making chloride channels. These channels, which transport negatively charged chlorine atoms (chloride ions), play a key role in a cell's ability to generate and transmit electrical signals. Some CLC channels regulate the flow of chloride ions across cell membranes, while others transport chloride ions within cells.

The CLCN1 gene provides instructions for making a chloride channel called ClC-1. These channels are abundant in muscles used for movement (skeletal muscles). For the body to move normally, skeletal muscles must tense (contract) and relax in a coordinated way. Muscle contraction and relaxation are controlled by the flow of certain ions into and out of muscle cells. ClC-1 channels, which span the cell membrane, control the flow of chloride ions into these cells. This influx stabilizes the cells' electrical charge, which prevents muscles from contracting abnormally.

ClC-1 channels are made of two identical protein subunits, each produced from the CLCN1 gene. Although each subunit forms a separate opening (pore) that allows chloride ions to pass through, the two proteins work together to regulate the flow of chloride ions into skeletal muscle cells.

Hello Tangri: There is a way out of this and to recover. It's called kick the pc government out of Ottawa and get a strongly minority government in. When a party and man such as harper have ultimate power it has gone to his head and the heads of the politicians to think they can go anything they want. This is due to a majority government now in power. There is a way to recover and recover extremely fast....KICK the harper government OUT!
NEVER let the pc party have this much power again! This party has done more harm than the rest of the governments in Canadian history. This was the party that said they would follow their mandate and make Canada a better place to live and raise a family. What we got was a dictator! Time for a change just like the huge change in Alberta. Even the premier who thought he would win again (prentice) QUIT ALL POLITICS and ran home with his tail between his legs. Now that's what needs to happen federally.

This is not only Canada's problem, almost every western country's people(especially americans) consume this kind of drinks.

Great thread Tangri, thank you.

I quite agree, it is most likely the case, that these processed chemical drinks are seriously impacting the health of the users. Personally don't touch them myself as my body now rejects them. I do warn others though it often goes unheeded.

The collapse in Government science has been going on for years. In fact the UK recently privatised the Food and Standards Agency providing Government oversight and the first announcement heralded the desire for profit and income, no mention of standards. In fact it can be compared with the corrupt US CDC now.

This is only the start, it will become much worse as the new breed of scientists being trained are receiving substandard educations these days. (ref: Catherine Ishbert(?) the American Government educationalist). So the Standards will drop naturally with the new influx being "obedient" to the cause.

The danger here (Canada, USA) is, if scientists work for governmental institutes they can study relatively independent on some subjects, than privatized research institutes where they can never have a chance to challenge a consumer products.(because of the owner(boss)
