Kangaroos are extraordinarily powerful creatures. I once encountered a great big buck who stood eye-to-eye with me and I am 5"7 1/2 (172cm). We eye-balled each other for a minute or two before I retreated respectfully. We had a quiet understanding between us. :blushing:

Kangaroo Fights Back Breaking Hunter's Jaw
The hunter was aiming a gun at another animal at the time of the attack

40898

A hunter sustained serious facial injuries last Tuesday when the kangaroo he'd targeted 'fought back' - attacking the teenager who was in a moving vehicle.

Joshua Hayden was in Kellerberrin, Western Australia, on one of the frequent hunting trips he took with his brother, when he tried to shoot some animals.

'Knocked out'
Hayden was leaning out of a car window, aiming his gun at two kangaroos, when a third - who had previously disappeared from view - 'charged his car'.

He said: "It actually collided with the side of the car and smashed the front window.

"Then it bounced back onto me and headbutted me straight in the jaw."

Hayden was knocked out, and suffered a shattered jaw and cheekbone as a result of the attack. When he regained consciousness, he was confused, initially thinking it was his brother who'd hit him.
'Going crazy'
While Hayden says nothing like this has happened to him before, he claims he's observed increasing aggression from the animals he hunts.

"The kangaroos are going crazy these days. As soon as they see a car they hop right up to it and give it right back."

Doctors told Hayden they will have to wait until the swelling in his face goes down before they can operate.

The condition of the kangaroo is unknown.

88-year-old vegan climbs Kilimanjaro

41000

Colorado resident Fred Distelhorst may have set a world record as the oldest person to ever ascend one of the world’s highest peaks.

This week, Colorado resident Fred Distelhorst ascended Mount Kilimanjaro—one of the world’s highest peaks, at 19,341 feet. The 88-year-old retired dentist credited his vegan diet for his physical fitness, stating, “I think I’m in pretty good shape even though I’m a little old guy.” Distelhorst climbed the mountain with his 22-year-old granddaughter Ellen Edgerton, who launched a fundraising campaign in conjunction with the climb to benefit orphanages for children with AIDS in Kenya. Distelhorst’s incredible climb is currently under the review by the Guinness World Records to determine if the plant-based athlete will receive the title of the oldest person to conquer Kilimanjaro. Last year, climber Kuntal Joisher became the first-known vegan to summit Mount Everest, accepted by most as the highest mountain in the world.

Shares her thoughts about Avocadoes.

I've been telling you, don't throw away the avocado with the oils! The nutrients in the avocado promote healing. I have witnessed this in my clients who have reversed autoimmune diseases like Lupus and RA and others while eating lots of avocados, and I healed myself from Lupus while using a lot of guacamole dip to munch down pounds of raw broccoli!

This recent study supports that the worst LDL cholesterol drops MORE with adding avocado to people's diet than taking the fats away and having more grains!

I have never witnessed rapid healing from adding grains, but I have seen amazing results adding avocados.

So don't be afraid of the avocado!

I just received the following request from Total Liberation International so I am passing on the baton to like-minded individuals who recognize the cruelty subjected to some of the most beautiful creatures on the planet in the name of entertainment and want to do something about it:

At least 40 orcas have died at SeaWorld from causes such as severe trauma, intestinal gangrene, and chronic cardiovascular failure. The public has largely turned against SeaWorld—and the embattled company has finally agreed to end captive orca breeding as a result—but this does nothing to help the animals who are still suffering in its tiny prison tanks.

Dozens of companies—including JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, STA Travel, Taco Bell, Mott's, Thomas Cook, Virgin Holidays and many others have severed ties with Seaworld citing the horrific animal abuse Seaworld is involved in as the reason for doing so. Yet AAA and some of its member clubs continue to promote this cruel ABUSE-ment park, which profits from keeping dolphins and orcas in concrete tanks that, to them, are the size of bathtubs.

Many individual AAA clubs, including those in Alabama, Arizona, Minnesota, Texas, and Washington—have made the compassionate decision and stopped selling SeaWorld tickets which promote this animal abusive company.
It's time the national organization followed suit.

Join this email petition and URGE AAA to DROP SEAWORLD NATIONWIDE!

This campaign will auto-populate an email message for you to send.

Vegan Cannibals Rejoice, There’s Finally a Plant-Based Version of Human Flesh
https://www.livekindly.com/vegan-cannibals-rejoice-theres-finally-plant-based-version-human-flesh/amp/?fbclid=IwAR3yuD9oT5SdYBfrWdX6xYcfxP0BSk8g2eUxEa7kRqHmiEJ4Ji8Z9wYB11k

Hufu is a “healthy human flesh alternative,” a plant-based meat product developed for vegan cannibals.

Hufu was advertized online between 2005 and 2006. The product was said to carry the taste and texture of human flesh but it was made out of tofu.

Mark Nuckols, the founder and CEO of Hufu, thought up the concept whilst eating a tofurkey sandwich and reading “Good To Eat: Riddles of Food and Culture,” a book about humankind’s food habits and cannibalism.

Hufu was marketed toward “cannibals who want to quit.” At the time, its website said Hufu is “a great convenience food for cannibals. No more Friday night hunting raids! Stay home and enjoy the good healthy taste of Hufu.”

The tofu product was also marketed toward anthropology students studying cannibalism and those wanting to give cannibalism a go without actually having to give cannibalism a go.

In an interview on The Daily Show, Nuckols explained, “I think that a lot of the pleasure of eating the Hufu product is imagining you’re eating human flesh. For that moment, you can join the fraternity of cannibals… If you really want to come as close as possible to the experience of cannibalism, Hufu is your best option.”

As well as being a place to purchase the tofu meat, the Hufu website featured Hufu recipes, merchandise, and information about famous cannibals. In an interview with The Standford Daily, Nuckols said the website was “designed to provoke people and get a reaction from them.”

The product’s fanbase was largely vegetarian, Nuckols told the publication. “I bet you a real Fijian headhunter would enjoy Hufu,” he added.

The product was difficult to create since Nuckols had never tasted human meat himself. The flavoring was mastered by research — specifically, descriptions from cannibals in anthropology books — and countless hours of experimentation.

The website described the end result: “If you’ve never had human flesh before, think of the taste and texture of beef, except a little sweeter in taste and a little softer in texture.”

Nuckols closed down the Hufu website in June 2006, explaining that it was expensive to run and that “the world has moved on past Hufu.” Guess plain old tofu will have to do for now.

Was the Pre-Colonial Choctaw Native American Diet Vegetarian?

41232

Choctaws were not the first vegetarians but their traditional Native American diet was mostly plant-based

The Choctaw long have been recognized as the best agriculturalists in the Southeast, with historical accounts detailing a rich, plant-based Native American diet. But were they also the first vegetarians? According to Rita Laws, the answer is no.

Laws, who holds a Ph.D. in psychology and writes about history and nutrition, tackled this misconception more than 20 years ago (https://ivu.org/history/native_americans.html). While the Choctaw have spent thousands of years cultivating corn, pumpkin and beans, they were not traditionally vegetarians, she said—or at least not on purpose.

“Agriculture was so important to our ancestors that they really focused on that to the exclusion of meat,” she said. “It wasn’t so much a health-conscious decision, but we ate what was available, and that was what we grew. Eating meat was more the exception than the rule.”

Laws, Choctaw, adopted a vegetarian diet in 1979 and now advocates for a return to healthy diets that include traditional plant-based foods. Her quest to understand the Choctaw diet began as a personal journey to take control of her own health and combat obesity.

“I was trying to figure out why obesity is such a big thing among Oklahomans with Indian blood,” she said. “I found that it is tied to the nutritional memory of our bodies and the way we have strayed from our ancestral diets.”

Laws discovered that the Choctaw rarely consumed meat prior to 1492. She also found that, after European contact, indigenous people began moving toward animal-based diets while the settlers began moving toward vegetables.

“This is more evidence of how our culture was badly injured after the Europeans arrived,” Laws said. “Prior to European settlement, interior tribes like the Choctaw had a tendency to eat little or no meat because they simply lacked the technology to move toward an animal-based diet.”

The notion of Inuit health is, as many will be aware, a subject which has surfaced on more than one occasion here on Avalon. Here are an example of some typical comments:

.....Inuit people have been living above the arctic circle on the ice in igloos for thousands of years and they mostly ever ate seal and a little fish. Fish takes a long time to catch and does not give a lot of meat. In any case they never consumed any fruits or vegetables in their entire lives. And they were and are among the healthiest people on the planet.....here (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?105803-The-Breatharian-Path-The-Science-my-own-Journey-and-the-Ramifications-for-any-Human&p=1271329&viewfull=1#post1271329)

.....The inuit subsist on fermented blubber for much of the year and have vry low rates of heart disease.....here (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?98353-Worldwide-status-on-food-water-consumables-etc...&p=1160698&viewfull=1#post1160698)

.....despite the extremely excessive fat and protein consumption, true (natural life) Inuit rarely have issues with weight, diabetes, etc.....here (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?86017-Sudden-Changes-in-one-s-Preferences&p=1010170&viewfull=1#post1010170)

I could go on but you get the idea, so when I came across the following group of videos documenting the reality of the situation in great detail, I felt I had to share. Needless to say, the information is in stark contrast to generally accepted public opinion:

Many in America buy organic dairy products under the illusion that they are somehow contributing to higher welfare standards because of the higher priced products. The reality is that there is no difference in welfare. The only reason for the higher price is the organic feed and lack of antibiotics, the latter of which some might argue would actually lower the costs of keeping the animals providing they don't get ill.

The following (disturbing) video highlights this all too clearly whilst exposing Natural Prairie Dairies (https://naturalprairiedairy.com/) (click the link to see how wide the gap between PR and reality is!), one of the US’s largest organic dairy farms:

High Protein Diet Danger

[...]One of the leading experts in excitotoxicity found that eating a diet high in meats increased blood glutamate levels. The levels were 100 percent higher if the person had a neurodegenerative disease. Meats are naturally high in glutamate, especially beef and other red meats. The juices are especially high in glutamate, the amino acid that causes the excitotoxicity [...]

[...] Because glutamine is converted into glutamate in the brain, I would advise against taking glutamine supplements. Studies have shown that high glutamine intake does indeed increase excitotoxicity, especially in people with a neurodegenerative disease. Some nutritionists advocate taking glutamine to repair the GI tract, but recent studies have shown it is not effective.
I also recommend avoiding protein drinks, protein bars, and other forms of concentrated proteins and isolated amino acid mixtures. Body builders are at risk because they consume these protein supplements in huge amounts. High protein diets also accelerate aging and damage the kidneys.[...]

I don't get asked that question much any more but whenever I do, here is how I usually respond:

1. There are no kwashiorkor clinics in the western world.

2. "People tend to get too much protein in their diets rather than too little. I'll often refer people to Dr. Garth Davis's excellent book called Proteinaholic (http://proteinaholic.com/) if they are open to what I have to share.

3. There is some evidence to suggest a link between long term body building, high protein diets, and kidney issues (https://www.worldkidneyday.org/high-protein-diets-and-kidney-disease/).

Tesco just released an advert promoting it’s meat-free Cumberland sausages.....

_3PW8BlNDl4

which shows a little girl telling her dad that she doesn’t want to eat, not meat but that highly contraversial, euphemism-free word, animals, anymore, the result being that her dad simply puts vegan sausages in his sausage casserole from then on - everyone happy?

Oh no! Not the UK’s National Farmers’ Union. They’ve been freaking out over it…..

.....The NFU has contacted Tesco to raise its objections with a new TV advert shown on 10 October 2019 which promotes a move towards a vegetarian diet which sees a child state, 'daddy I don’t want to eat animals anymore'. The advert is entitled The Carl's 'All Change' Casserole advert, which is part of Tesco love stories.
NFU President Minette Batters has this morning written to Tesco to outline our members' significant concerns with the language used within the advert and how it has caused significant distress for British Farmers.
The NFU believes that messaging such as this is demonising meat as a food group, which not only has negative connotations for farmers but also for the avocation of customers eating a healthy balanced diet.
The NFU is clear that food and nutrition must be looked at as a whole, rather than food groups in isolation. Meat as a food group provides naturally rich in protein and are a good source of iron, zinc and essential vitamins. There are certain parts of the population, especially teenage girls, who are currently not eating sufficient quantities of these micro-nutrients to fulfil their dietary requirement.
We believe it is vital that children do not establish misleading views of food groups, which may later affect their health and diets.....(full NFU letter to Tesco here (https://www.nfuonline.com/sectors/livestock/livestock-must-read/nfu-disappointment-with-tesco-advert/))

…..along with meat-loving media types such as Janet Street-Porter.

Great 🙏😊🙏

Wish there is more genuine interest and transparent studies in the fields of human medicine and biology that would show results of plant based diet in people of various ages and conditions.
The thing is, they would find much more about human metabolism and its almost miraculous abilities than they wish to admit.

Today’s mainstream medicine is still taught with amount of prejudice and strangely enough, after surpassing almost all the “tabu” topics ever occurring in human bodies and minds, vegan and vegetarian diets still stand as an “alien dogma” with most western oriented doctors.
They still keep telling people and their children that “we can’t keep healthy without animal proteins” and “most of our therapies won’t work precisely as they should if you are vegan/vegetarian”.

It does not mean that people would stop eating meat globally, or from one day to another, I think we are far from there ..

but at least the erroneous idea of dependence( other than psychological dependence) should not be fuelled by academic based professionals.

It’s not dissimilar situation to that of “clean energy” vs fossil fuels, in my opinion.

Fossil fuels are part of biggest industry on earth at the moment and so also readily available and people got used to using them,
no matter how it smells and how many burn outs we breathe (and experience).

Most “important items” in human life are habit based. It takes generations of people to admit mass misuse of almost anything,
to rise the awareness, change technologies and ultimately, change habits.

See the relationship between man and his meat is almost very intimate, archetypal relationship of embracing the “force” enabling us to withstand and fight with the Universe.
It’s about “being the strongest animal here” and “one with good teeth”.

It really is a primitive one and an offence to who we are in essence as entities -biological and spiritual.

Once people liberate themselves from dependence on all kinds of substances, including sugars, diary products and all the rest of healthy fads- they will rediscover whole new sense of themselves and ways to navigate
from primitive to civilised entities.
There is no “one rule fits all” but first of all they should stop feeding people the lie of being dependant on animal proteins.

My mum spent years in medical research both as medical professional and a patient and typical skeptic towards everything anomalous that the books did not approve but she also happened to experience the change and difference
of not eating meat for many years and big relief to her condition if she could abstain from it.
So did other people in the program and she had some of the best( detailed) laboratory monitoring done.
In short, most people with metabolic issues such as diabetes, pancreatic and liver conditions, many autoimmunity disorders could be alleviated or prevented if people were not being misinformed.

The hidden truth ? Many MDs within the programs do know about it but they would have or do have hard times convincing the rest of the academically indoctrinated community who go by the label “human = advanced animal , omnivore”.

Admittedly they run the whole research to human biology as based on an idea, not based on true results.

They also are their own guinea pigs as many MDs in the west are ill people at some point of their life, they’re subjected and subject themselves to the same treatments as their patients.
Most aren’t more healthy or more disciplined than the rest
and they better die for their taught habits ( “cause it is human) than try different avenue and get better without being animal as well.

So cheers ... thanks to my own vegetarian approach to food since teenage I was spared what was shown to me much earlier ..
the horror of human-animal treatments ...

On the run 😆 and sorry for all the typos and wrong inclining apostrophes - it’s my phone keyboard doing it.

Only a few months ago I started the transition to a plant based diet. I thought it would be hard to do
but was determined to go all the way. It was easier and more rewarding than I imagined.

I'm not there fully yet so on occasion I have a small amount of chicken or lamb stew. Maybe I always will
but not often. I feel better already, or it might be psychological. Either way I'll take it. Whatever makes
me feel better is what I will choose every time.

I was always since my thirties very conscious of nutrition and diet so did not have to make many changes.
I read a few good books. "Forks over Knives" is a small easy to read one that I recommend. Another has a strange
title, "How not to Die" by Michael Greger, M.D. (not your typical M.D.)

Enjoy!

Only a few months ago I started the transition to a plant based diet. I thought it would be hard to do

Good going, East Sun!

I've been moving along this trajectory for a while now also. First, I eliminated all animals feathered and furred. That felt really good and I actually didn't find it difficult at all.

The toughest part for me was/has been eliminating seafood from my diet. I've always loved ocean fish, shellfish, lobster, crab, shrimp, and whatever other creatures came out of the sea. Eliminating dairy wasn't too hard, although, I do miss good cheese here and there.

For me, it was 100% about not wanting to be part of the animal torture, fear, and slaughter wrongness. Health and wellness benefits along with a plant based diet being infinitely better for the planet are just icing on the cake (vegan, of course)!! :flower:

How it works for me: Small changes over time nets lasting results.

Some reasons why I eat whole foods 95%-98% of the time and fast occasionally:

create and nourish an environment so that is self-healing
cleans the body of environmental toxins
rid the old cells that are a drain on and age the body
live a quality life without pain and inflammation

Some excerpts from Wiki’ on bovine growth hormone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovine_somatotropin) and its synthesised equivalent, rBST:

.....Bovine somatotropin or bovine somatotrophin (abbreviated bST and BST), or bovine growth hormone (BGH), is a peptide hormone produced by cows' pituitary glands. Like other hormones, it is produced in small quantities and is used in regulating metabolic processes.

After the biotech company Genentech discovered and patented the gene for BST in the 1970s, it became possible to synthesize the hormone using recombinant DNA technology to create recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST), recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), or artificial growth hormone.

Four large pharmaceutical companies, Monsanto, American Cyanamid, Eli Lilly, and Upjohn, developed commercial rBST products and submitted them to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval. Monsanto was the first firm to receive approval. Other countries (Mexico, Brazil, India, Russia, and at least ten others) also approved rBST for commercial use. Monsanto licensed Genentech's patent, and marketed their product as "Posilac". In October 2008, Monsanto sold this business, in full, to Eli Lilly and Company for $300 million plus additional consideration.

rBST has not been allowed since at least 2000 on the market in Canada, or since 1990 in the European Union (EU). Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel, and Argentina have also banned the use of rBST.

An EU report on the animal welfare effects of rBST states that its use often results in "severe and unnecessary pain, suffering and distress" for cows, and is "associated with serious mastitis, foot disorders and some reproductive problems".

In 1937, the administration of BST was shown to increase the milk yield in lactating cows by preventing mammary cell death in dairy cattle. Until the 1980s, use of the compound was very limited in agriculture as the sole source of the hormone was from bovine carcasses. During this time, the knowledge of the structure and function of the hormone increased.

With the advent of biotechnology, one of the pioneering biotech companies, Genentech, in 1981 succeeded in cloning and patenting the gene for BST Monsanto had been working along the same lines and struck a deal with Genentech in 1979 to license Genentech's patents and collaborate on development of a recombinant version of BST – a process on which Monsanto would invest $300 million. The two companies used genetic engineering to clone the BST gene into E. coli. The bacteria are grown in bioreactors, then broken up and separated from the rBST, which is purified to produce the injectable hormone. They published their first field trial results in 1981.

Though approved by the FDA in 1993, rBST has been immersed in controversy since the early 1980s.[5] Part of the controversy concerns potential effects on animal health and human health.

Animal health

One meta-analysis published in 2003 suggested a negative impact of rBST's effects on bovine health. Findings suggested an average increase in milk output ranging from 11%–16%, an approximate 24% increase in the risk of clinical mastitis, a 40% reduction in fertility, and 55% increased risk of developing clinical signs of lameness.

Human health

The effects of rBGH on human health is an ongoing debate, in part due to the lack of conclusive evidence. A few of the most debated issues include:

Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a hormone found in humans that is responsible for growth promotion, protein synthesis, and insulin actions over the lifecycle. The hormone has been shown to influence the growth of tumors in some studies and may be linked to the development of prostate, colorectal, breast, and other cancers.....

lKngv7mL48s

..... and a very brief summary from Wiki' regarding hormones in beef, poultry and pork:

.....current policy, in which all beef is allowed whether produced with hormones or genetically modified, US consumers now have to rely on their own judgment when buying goods. However, in a study done in 2002, 85% of respondents wanted mandatory labeling on beef produced with growth hormones.....Wiki (click here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beef_hormone_controversy) for full page)

his wife is one person with one ailment. so what?:) that would be like if i listed one well known vegan who had some terminal disease and then completely dismissed all of veganism as a result.

as far as peterson in rehab, yes that's true. he's never been shy about admitting to taking certain drugs to curtail depression and anxiety. i think what he's doing is quite courageous.

but you have to understand - he cannot eat anything but meat. veggies and fruits send him into deep depressions that last weeks and months. ditto his daughter. they both feel profoundly better on meats, but that doesn't mean that the diet is a panacea for all ailments and that they will never fall ill from time to time. nor does it mean that when they do, the diet should then be dismissed as bunk. Now that is arrogance.

You only have to read the title of his book and then observe his current predicament to recognize the utter nonsense at play here. Clearly the diet doesn't do what his book claims (and his wife was diagnosed after being on the carnivore diet btw). He was depressed while on fruit and veg' and he's still depressed when he's on 100% carcass. Maybe, just maybe his depression is a response to his reality. Trust me (or don't, I really don't care) but when I was going through it, I was written up for all manner of anti-psychotics, anti-depressants (over 17 over a period of 4 years), and you know what, none of them worked because at the end of the day I had to sort myself out instead of sticking the proverbial, pharmaceutical plaster over my life. And I did sort my self out. That's why when I hear pathetic whining junkies (cos effectively that's what he is) promoting SSRI s  (and meat ) like they're the solution I know we have another lost soul on our hands.

As I said in my previous post on the subject, cue the law suits, at which point his volume of med's consumption will no doubt go through the roof. Karma much? After all, consider all the Jordanites hanging on his very word who will be adopting this "diet" and, in turn, be increasing the already burgeoning animal suffering on this planet.

You're missing the point. And you will likely continue to, because you remain willfully blind to other realities besides your own.

I *do* admire your stance on animal cruelty. Those videos you post horrify me too. I appreciate where youre coming from in that respect. I support you there.

But...the diet does do what it claims *for some people*. You're much too anxious to dismiss it out of hand so you conveniently include distortion when it suits you and exclude the diets' near miraculous results for some people to further your agenda. I notice you left out all the miracles it provided for Peterson's daughter. Would you like me to list them for you here? Would it even matter?

Jordan Peterson was nearly bed ridden for years prior to his mostly all meat diet. It has worked wonders for his anxiety and depression. Yes, he still has symptoms of anxiety and depression, but to point this out in favor of the miracle it *did* actually provide him is you being willfully obtuse.

The diet almost completely remedied his daughter's autoimmune diseases, depression, and anxiety. Facts.

His wife may have been diagnosed after she started the diet, but that doesn't mean the disease wasn't already in motion prior to her beginning the diet. These things are highly nuanced, and you can't make these reductionist arguments and expect to be taken seriously. Cancer is generally caused by years and years of poor habits.

And even if the diet isn't suitable for her body, so what? It's clearly suitable for Peterson's, and his daughter's. Perhaps his wife would thrive on a vegan or vegetarian diet. But that doesn't prove anything except that some diets work for some people and don't work for others.

Diet isn't religion. Dogmatism isn't useful, and it won't convert anyone either.

Try to get past that point in the video, Running Deer. All you have to do is drag the playhead beyond that point with your mouse. You will then be free to digest what she is saying.
While there is obviously no doubt that Australia has always suffered from bush fires, the phenomenon is clearly exacerbated by the intensive animal agriculture which it brazenly prides itself on and this is the point she was making. Firemen having a sausage sizzle to raise money for the cause etc....This is literally the epitome of idiocracy.

In the wake of the unbelievably successful Veganuary, the dairy industry has, for the second year in a row, attempted to claw back some of the market share.....with disastrous consequences, just like last year - surprise, surprise.

A quick Google search of the word reveals as many negative links on the subject as it does positive ones.

I found the following video response to the phenomenon particularly insightful as it uses educational industry footage, footage which Februdairy will never link to in a million years, but which forms the backbone of the industry itself.

Everyone who consumes milk should watch this. It is not graphic in the slaughterhouse footage sense so no blood. However, much of the footage does come off as some kind of weird bestiality flick (not that I've ever seen one). I have to say, this is very exciting for me because it will no doubt open the floodgates of possibilities for vegan Crunchie bars, Twixes, Snickers and Mars bars etc....and if the vegan alternatives are as good as Cadbury want them to be, in other words, giving the same consumer experience, why would people still opt for the cruelty-laden version? Two Guys Create 'Leather' From Cactus, Will Save 1 Billion Animals Killed For Fashion
https://www.indiatimes.com/technology/science-and-future/two-guys-create-leather-from-cactus-will-save-1-billion-animals-killed-for-fashion-507055.html

Whether you like it or hate it, you’ve got to admit, leather products aren’t good for the environment. In fact, according to PETA, the global leather industry kills more than a billion animals for their skin and hides.

However, what’s even more worrying is the impact leather has on the environment. Not only the animal from which leather is derived consumes a ton of water in its lifetime, but after deriving the skin, the treatment process introduces it with a ton of chemicals. This not only is harmful to the environment but also makes the leather item non-biodegradable.

Chinese government approves decision to ban consumption of wild animals
From journalist Isaac Yee and CNN’s Yong Xiong in Shanghai
February 24, 2020

https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-02-24-20-hnk-intl/h_e9e7718ef4bebc5ffe32d35e32c4469f

( It probably won't stop the illegal black market trade, but it's a step.)

"China's top political body approved the decision on Monday to ban the consumption and the illegal trade of wild animals, which some experts believe to be the source of the virus.

The National People’s Congress Standing Committee approved the ban on Monday in a bid to help “safeguard public health and ecological security," according to Chinese state media.

The move aims to “completely ban the eating of wild animals” while also “cracking down on illegal trade of wildlife,” state media reports.

The use of wild animals for scientific research, medicine and exhibition will now need to go through “strict examination and approval” by the supervising department in accordance with relevant regulations.

This comes after Chinese authorities suspended the trade of wild animals on January 26th in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus."

I made vegetable tempura with Chinese take-away style sweet and sour sauce and rice last week.....maybe not the most healthy food but it was really good. Deep-fried battered mushrooms, broccoli and zucchini. Here's the batter recipe:

1/2 cup plain flour (replace with rice flour for gluten free)

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp sugar

1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda

2 tbsp cornstarch

1/2 water (add a bit more if it's too thick)

Mix together into a smooth paste and then dip veggies in and fry in vegetable oil (I used sunflower oil).

For the take-away sweet and sour sauce:

50g sugar

35g vinegar

20ml water

40g tomato ketchup

For thickening the sauce:

4g cornstarch

5ml water

mix the ingredients in a pan and bring to simmer. Then add the mixed thickening paste until the whole sauce thickens.

Dip tempura in the sauce and enjoy or serve with rice and drizzle sauce on top: your choice. Frying some peppers and onion in a wok also compliments the meal.

Or if you're feeling a bit more adventurous.........

When we consider that we are now like caged monkeys ourselves, this might give us another perspective on why there are ethical considerations to be made for the animals who are providing us with sustenance.

Staggering drone footage of factory farming operations in the USA:

Zmli_NuFkK4

I posted the above footage almost three years ago. Many of the CAFOs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concentrated_animal_feeding_operation) featured would likely have been part of Smithfield's supply chain.

What most will not be aware of is that last year Smithfield was acquired by Chinese investment capital giant Shuanghei International (https://www.newswise.com/articles/the-smithfield-acquisition-shuanghui-buys-the-whole-hog).

This brings up many concerns for US citizens because now these Smithfield CAFOs which have been polluting their surrounding areas on a literally industrial scale are technically Chinese operations.

It also brings into question Donald Trump's hard line against China when he is forcing Smithfield workers back to work (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trumps-meat-processing-mandate-leaves-worker-safety-unclear/).

Of course at the core of this problem is global soy production which is the only viable feed for this scale of livestock production. As I'm sure most are now aware, vast areas of the Amazonian rain forest have and continue to be destroyed to make way for more soy production.

The following documentary goes into great detail about the Shuanghui / Smithfield takeover as well as the industrial scale soy production being employed in South America and the attempts to expand that production into Africa where the indiginous people barely have enough food to feed themselves as it is, let alone have their land ear-marked for mono-crops to be exported to feed animals in other countries.

Joe Rogan recently had Jon Stewart on The Joe Rogan Experience (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXOUCRLW2UI). Now as it turns out, Jon and his wife are vegan, to the degree that they even run an animal sanctury, which inevitably led to veganism coming up in coversation. As one would expect, Joe was defending his own personal view (factory farms bad, hunting good).
Some of his pro-hunting arguments might have even seemed plausible were it not for the likes of Ed (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVRrGAcUc7cblUzOhI1KfFg), stepping in once again to bring clarity to this hotly debated topic.

There is a common misconception that vegans are the reason for all the soy production in South America. I know because it is a subject I have come up against on more than one occasion and it is incredibly frustrating to have to rebutt it with the facts of the matter.

Fortunately, in the wake of a recent propaganda piece masquerading as a scientific study, Earthling Ed (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVRrGAcUc7cblUzOhI1KfFg) has decided to push back on this now very tedius trope.

In the following video, Mic the Vegan (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGJq0eQZoFSwgcqgxIE9MHw) explores the scenario of a vegan world over a timeline of the next 100 years and how such a world would result in dramatic positive transformations.

This includes the reduction in ocean deadzones due to current animal waste run-off.

He also goes into detail regarding the rewilding of habitat previously dedicated to livestock which would in turn sequester problematic greenhouse gases.

Zoonotic illnesses such as bird flu and covid 19 are also mentioned as well as the projected reduction in species extinction in such a scenario.

Mic also mentions the current rate of Amazon deforestation and how 80% of it is due to livestock, either directly for grazing or indirectly for growing feed and how this would be dramatically reduced in a vegan world.

Another interesting factor is how the financial strain on the world's healthcare systems would be reduced if everyone transitioned to a vegan diet.

Also mentioned is the recovery of what are currently severely depleted marine populations.

Mic cites peer-reviewed studies illustrating the dramatic changes that would occur under such circumstances.

Watch the video and if you haven't already made the transition, please consider doing so. It won't be legislation that solves the environmental crisis but rather our personal decisions.....collectively.

New US Dietary Guidelines Say Go Vegan? (15:25 min)

The meat industry says they 'urge plant-based protein,' others say a certain recommendation in the new 2020-2025 guidelines would result in a fully plant-based diet if followed. Let's take a look!

“Britain’s Mad Cow Disease scandal was caused when farmers turned herbivores into cannibals.”

“Details of how politicians allow farmers to feed their animals are coming to light with greater frequency in the wake of the appalling Mad Cow Disease scandal in the UK.

For example, among the cheap ‘foods’ fed to cattle and pigs on farms in the US are: human sewage sludge, dead cats and dogs, chicken manure, slaughterhouse waste (blood, bones, intestines), cement kiln dust, old newspapers, waste cardboard, agricultural waste (corn cobs, fruit and vegetable peelings) and old fat from restaurants and grease traps. Those who eat meat are, of course, consuming the residues of all these delectables. What a tribute all this is to the glory of twenty first century civilisation.

If it is true (as I believe it is) that we are what we eat then this news should alarm all meat eaters. What farmers choose to include in animal feed is crucial to human health.”

Last week, I went to the local organic shop to buy more vegan “butter”. It had been steadily rising in price for the last year but last week I discovered it had jumped by almost 25% in just a matter of days since my previous purchase: actually a good thing since it nudged me into putting it on my DIY list. So after some ‘net perusal and subsequent experimentation I’ve come up with the following recipe.

Disclaimer: I’m not claiming it’s healthy, however it is probably significantly lower in cholesterol, and is free from antibiotics and bovine growth hormone unlike it’s less compassionate alternative.

So here goes:

- 1 cup refined coconut oil

- 0.5 cup sunflower oil (or canola or avocado oil)

- 0.5 cup soya milk (unsweetened)

- 0.5 tablespoon nutritional yeast

- 3 teaspoons sunflower/soya lecithin

- 0.5 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

- 0.5 teaspoons salt

Method

- Mix oils together (coconut oil should be completely liquid)

- Mix all other ingredients together using hand blender

- With hand blender still going, SLOWLY add the oil mix until completely blended.

- Then refrigerate in a suitable lidded container for 2 hours to solidify it.

The final hike in price took the butter I was buying up to over $6. This recipe brings it down to about a dollar. Granted, the product I was buying was “organic” and If I used 100% organic ingredients, it may triple the cost, but that is still half the price, so give it a go and feel free to comment if you like it.
