As an ecologist working several decades in various environmental sectors, I will say that I have come to learn that ecological illiteracy is not an accident, it could be considered as a successful form of social engineering that is very convenient for the current greed driven oligarchy.

https://thesilentecocide.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/11020480_425349920966971_4609128058935102174_n.jpg

We were not born ecologically illiterate, a child instinctively knows to care for animals and the environment and often a toddler marvels at every blade of grass and insect it encounters, it is usually when a child is shown or taught cruelty that a child starts to mimic adults by example and not respecting its fellow creatures or environment.

Biophilia is an instinct we were born with, an inner sense of feeling good and being uplifted by nature. However systematic deprogramming in humans has turned us into good capitalists and consumers but appalling environmental protectors, making us ignorant of ecology and how we are affected by or affecting key ecosystems on the Earth, solely by our lifestyle choices. Society has conditioned people to become so distant from or even scared of nature to being repulsed by it, to the point that many people can be called biophobic. Society has done this through schooling and lack of emphasis on ecology (we are mostly taught we are superior to and separate from nature). Social media, movies and television programming has been convenient in this way to government, so have many religious beliefs.

As a result of humanity’s ecological ignorance and belief that we are separate from nature, the ecosystems of our planet show severe signs of devastating impact; from oceans being contaminated with radioactive waste, sewerage, and oxygen depleted zones. Another example of ecological illiteracy is that many people refer to the forests as ‘the lungs of the planet‘, it is actually the world’s oceans and their marine algal and microbial communities that are the lungs of the Earth, producing 80 percent of the world’s oxygen, and the ocean is a keystone ecosystem to stabilizing climate and maintaining good oxygen levels. Yet, the oceans are heavily polluted with plastic and toxic effluence, contaminating major global food chains and yet we continue to over-exploit over 85 percent of the world’s fish stocks.

There may be no rainforests left in twenty years’ time or enough fish in the ocean in ten years’ time, it has already been noted that future generations will not be able to fish as we do today in just twenty years from now. Over half the world will have a water crisis in fifteen years from now. Bees, which are our most important crop pollinators, are fast disappearing due to toxic chemicals from aerosols being sprayed into the atmosphere via geo- engineering and pesticides being used in industrial scale farming. The rate of deforestation and ocean pollution is destroying our major keystone ecosystems and their ability to maintain stable weather systems.

Just imagine if things were entirely different, if we all were ecologically literate and aware of the consequences of our daily actions on key ecosystems and on other species and the violence we cause Earth. We would be far more respectful to nature and the greed driven corporate power system as it is, would cease to be destructive to the environment, pollution would no longer be profitable, instead environmental investment would be more beneficial as well us seeing as an expansion of employment in a green ecological capitalism that thrives through pioneering sustainable technologies in industry and ecological economies.

We would have a community orientated management of natural resources, (rather than centralized government management of natural resources), that prioritized nature and all kinds of sustainable technologies in operation in society which would replace fossil fuels, which would be banned and replaced by billion dollar investments into clean technologies (technologies that presently exist but currently lack the funding and support from governments because they do not make enough money for governments or banks).

We would also have an ecologically based economy, one which invests in the bank of Nature or Natural Capital as it is referred to by ecological economists, where nature is given a significant financial value for its invisible goods and services, (a simple example are bees pollinating crops, clean water production via mountain aquifers and geological ecosystems and oxygen production from trees in forest ecosystems). Investment in Natural Capital would protect major natural resources from exploitation and destruction by super corporations, especially oil, gas and mineral companies.

One of the incredible benefits from a Natural Capital based economy is that it would wipe off each country’s Gross National Debt, for example The World Resource Institute (WRI) estimates the value of ecosystem goods and services to be US $33 trillion dollars a year, nearly twice the value of the global gross national product (GNP) of US $18 trillion. The USA is in debt by 17 trillion dollars, therefore, if the US transitioned to an economy based on natural capital, it would take care of this debt. Global debt is currently a powerful driving force of ecological destruction (ecocide), an example is that many Latin American countries are in debt to China and therefore China is one of the major driving forces through debt pressures, to rapidly exploiting the Amazon rainforest for oil, hydroelectric power and minerals, it is also now building a 5,000 km railway from Chile to Brazil, which will plough through previously protected rainforest and undisturbed indigenous tribes, a railway to remote areas of the Amazon rainforest will only further increase large scale destruction of precious biodiversity worth more left untouched and protected.

We would also have stringent international laws in place protecting the Earth from Ecocide and every country, not just a few countries, would by now have given Nature the same rights as a human being or a corporate fiction in the court of law, presently corporations have more rights than Nature, and more frequently corporations are beginning to have more rights than people, in this so called modern civilization.

As it presently stands, many governments profit immensely from destroying the environment and not having 7 billion people to stop them from doing so, is convenient due to our ecological illiteracy and the social engineered lack of care, and media distraction from the destruction of our Earth.

Presently, ourselves and world governments can no longer afford to be ecologically illiterate, this is driving an environmental crisis that has gone beyond critical tipping point where up to 150 species of animals and plants are disappearing daily and key ecosystems are being destroyed beyond recovery if we do not stop and make major changes now.

Ecological ignorance is good for business, yet business can only last so long while the environment is falling apart around us, everything we do relies on ecology and ecosystems, and we cannot continue to ignore this fact. Ecological illiteracy in government and society is one of the worst things that has happened to Earth and to us, for humanity to become so disconnected to ignorantly treat nature as separate from itself. The Caring Human is in Danger of Extinction.

I was just thinking about something very close last week.

The Oligarchy doesn't seem to be caring.

And since most of the rest of the people are in a survival mode, the caring mentality isn't advantaged nor encouraged at all.

So I also think that the caring mentality is in danger of extinction for several reasons.

every parent care for his children. There is just little time to care for so many because of the created scarcity. Ones the survival state is lifted the caring will be more visible. Caring is still alive to almost every human and animals too

Thank you, but being an environmental activist and conservationist, for the few humans that do care about the Earth, it is the caring ones that are left to work fifty times as hard as the ones that don't. For example when ever I go for a walk on the beach or in the forest, I have to take a garbage bag with me to clean up the mess that others have left behind.

David Orr put it perfectly ''First, for every “biophobe” (someone that wants nothing to do with nature or that disrespects nature), others have to do that much more of the work of preserving, caring for, and loving the nature that supports biophobes and biophiliacs (someone that cares about nature) alike. Economists call this the “free-rider problem”. It arises in every group, committee, or alliance when it is possible for some to receive all of the advantages of membership while doing none of the work necessary to create those advantages. Environmental free riders benefit from the willingness of others to fight for the clean air that they breathe, the clean water that they drink, the preservation of biological diversity that sustains them, and the conservation of the soil that feeds them. But they do not lift a finger to help. Biophobia is not okay because it does not distribute fairly, the work of keeping the Earth or any local place healthy. Biophobia is not okay for the same reason that misanthropy and sociopathy are not okay. Biophobia is not okay because it is the foundation for a politics of domination and exploitation. For our politics to work as they now do, a large number of people must not like any nature that cannot be repackaged and sold back to them. They must be ecologically illiterate and ecologically incompetent, and they must believe that this is not only inevitable but desirable. Furthermore, they must be ignorant of the basis of their dependency. They must come to see their bondage as freedom and their discontents as commercially solvable problems.’’ The drift toward a biophobic society, as George Orwell and C. S. Lewis foresaw decades ago, requires the replacement of nature and human nature by technology and the replacement of real democracy by a technological tyranny now looming on the horizon.’’-David Orr.

Yes the elite simply care about remaining in power and money, when oil and gas companies make over 30 to 50 million dollars an hour in profit, nothing else really matters to them. This is why we have to shift the economy from being oil based to being based on ecology.

The word ‘eco-nomy’ is defined by how communities of people choose to use their environmental resources to meet their chosen living requirements, therefore economy, should have always been based on ecological principles to begin with. Human life depends on goods and services provided by nature, therefore, it is our duty to manage what we utilise from Earth sustainably, if we want to keep the Earth Bank sustainable, we must invest in its future and its present invisible production of goods and services. We can explore innovative strategies to transfer an entire economy built on principles within the Earth's ecological carrying capacity, (within the limitations of the Earth's natural resources). When our current economy is based on oil, this can only mean ecological destruction, as it is the only way to gain profit and improve the economy as it is, if we transferred our economy from this destructive pattern, to be based on ecological values in terms of financial capital, we would not only secure life on Earth to prosper but our economy will be sustainable and evolve in unexpected ways.

Yes, whenever I go to the beach I hone my free dive skills by picking up plastics scattered on the sea floor this is how we educate. By example and fun as well. This way we need no look for reward or results.

Carlita, thank you for these precious reminders. Most of us are certainly disconnected from our true Mother, Gaia. When we are at the beach or in the forest, often we feel an ache, a sadness at the same time we experience the beauty. We know we've been away from Her too long.

Ayahuasca can help us with this. It's already helped many of us. :flower:

What a fantastic post, I could not agree more.

Reading this post I thought about how we are conditioned from childhood to equate the wood and forest with darkness and ill intent. Just think of the many Fairy Tales told to you at bedtime by a parent or loved one, and how many of those Fairy Tales have an evil being of some sort dwelling in them, waiting to snatch you away to some dark place should you enter.

I can remember as a small child entering the small wood near to my Grandparent's farm at dusk, and being able to 'feel' the energy of nature, of the trees.......... it was awe inspiring, even now after nearly forty years it is a vivid memory.

Regards.

Thank you so much for your contribution here, Sailing Beyond Knowledge. It must be devastating to so closely observe the environmental holocaust that has occurred over the last 30 years. To have such compassion and love for the earth and to stand witiness to the rape and plunder must require much strength. I find it so devastating at times that I fall into depression and negativity at times.

I couldn't agree more that we encouraged at every level to be "ecologically illiterate". I think the media does a really good job at minimizing and trivializing the natural world as well. I look at children's cartoons and every animal is presented with human attributes and they are always wise cracking , smart ass characters ready with a one liner every time. Their purpose most often is to help a human. We watch a dying fish flopping around for its last breath so the pharmaceutical company can sell a medication for COPD. There are oodles of reality shows that show the killing and abuse of animals, which I feel occurs if animals are captured or harmed for any other reason than for food, even though I personally do not eat them.

I really look forward to more from you, SBK!!!!!

I wonder how many people actually care. I mean… care to the point of actually changing up their lifestyles. Many of us harm the planet on a daily bases…even before leaving the house early in the morning. The products we use, the foods we consume, the greedy environmentally destructive companies we so blindly support. The "naive" may have the excuse of ignorance to explain their abusive nature… but what’s to say about those that do know better yet still do nothing. I see them everywhere. These people rather waste time, wait for others, and make excuses instead of being examples of honest efforts. When mankind finally kills itself off...will another species excavate our bones and think we were an intelligent species... or some confused mentally/spiritually challenged creature that destroyed itself and other Earthy inhabitants.

I agree with everything you wrote but I think it's a subset of the bigger reason people are making those choices.

I think people are reluctantly feeling the need to discard the little things that cost a little bit more both in time, selflessness and product buying thinking they have no other choice for survival - and if they felt more secure, fulfilled, fairly paid, and not extremely penny-pinched at every turn and squeezed of time they would gladly revert back to feeling free to give more 'care'. The heart potential and preference hasn't changed.

I also think the gradual economic pinching, emotional draining and survival fear imposing from every angle was very deliberately part of the long term plan to achieve a momentum of these 'uncaring' choices making which is really a form of dependence and giving in from desperation to somehow survive.

It would be lovely if people would retain their child like awe and delight with life and nature rather than harden into a kind of perpetual immaturity. Kids born in the last 15 years are remarkably mature and seem to have their priorities straight. The world could very well change for the better. But right now, the state of the planet and the Eco-cide cause me tremendous grief.

Hello PETERPAM, Thank you for the appreciation and shared resonance. It has caused me so much heartbreak to the point it has deeply affected my health also. I definitely feel the Earth's sadness and pain! So thanks for sharing that too, I am glad I am not alone on the deeper level of feeling it. I wrote this sometime ago, maybe it will help some people that relate.

Peace of Mind well said, these are the Biophiliacs, the people that are the Free Riders of those of us that work hard to defend and care for nature. For everyone that doesn't give a poop we have to work ten times as hard, it sucks but yes that is the reality and it is why we are in this mess. Hugs
