Interesting story of Russia Today about Netanyahu's attempt to influence some European leaders to vote against the interests of Israeli Zionist hawks.
Last Friday the UN Human Rights Council voted 41 to 1 to accept a report on Israeli atrocities in Gaza. (http://forward.com/news/breaking-news/311446/un-human-rights-council-votes-to-adopt-gaza-war-report/) (the U.S. being the lone vote to accept) and of course Netanyahu denounced the report and declared it was heavily biased. This decision was partly newsworthy because Germany, France and the U.K all voted for the report.
What is strangely curious is that Netanyaho called both Merkel of Germany and Cameron of the U.K. and asked them to support the report. One wonders if he also called Hollande?
Russian Today: Netanyahu ‘urged European leaders to support’ resolution against Israel (http://rt.com/news/272209-netanyahu-israel-resolution-un/)
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged several European leaders to support a UN report, even though it slammed Israel’s actions in Gaza, a report by the London-based Jewish Chronicle says.
The Israeli prime minister’s office rang British Prime Minister David Cameron on July 3. Cameron had planned to support Israel’s stance on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) report, but was asked to change his stance, as Israel believed it was a considerably watered-down version of a previous report that was to be published, the newspaper reported.
One source told the newspaper: “We thought this was extraordinary, to put it mildly, but decided to do as Israel asked.”
I have to wonder why Netanyahu would do this - is he trying to isolate his own country? Is he trying to bring a rift between his European Allies and his ally in the U.S.? Could he use this to escalate the conflict in Gaza and/or the other Palestinian controlled areas?
