He's a very old grumpy man wondering what's happening and wishing he could find a nice cup of tea (or whisky). He looks really bewildered and having to pose in silly uniforms at 90+whatever must be irritating.

He always has had a nasty turn of phrase--- and he's NOT mellowing!

Meh, so what, I'd probably say the same thing - he is just a man in his 90's who has led a life of being photographed and followed about, everyone hanging on every word - it is an artificial life and being in the public eye must be a bit wearing on the nerves. People get irritated all the time, give the old boy a break, he is just a bit peeved - everyone laughed, he was not even being seriously grumpy!
