(could not find a good version of this song)

The biggest reason I like this song is the lyrics and, in particular...

"And if the elevator tries to bring you down
Go crazy, punch a higher floor"

And, one of the best rock ballads of the 80's in my humble opinion....

Byrne and Eno, from the 1981 album 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" They listened to a bunch of old radio reels, and took parts from them and made songs around them.

*edited* you know it just occurred to me that these may be "songs you never heard" from the 80's, and if reminiscing was the intent of this thread, this is not going cut it for most. I had this album, so for me it is, and maybe, I dunno, one or two others, but not likely most people as this album wasn't radio play stuff.

oh, and hey Calz, those two songs you posted from Peter Gabriel's album Security: yes, that's a great album in its' entirety! All of his albums I've listened to, side A to side B, no stops, and they're all great albums. Security was also a concept album of sorts, in that there were no cymbals used in any of the drumming, just drums, and wow, mega drums at times.

Good to see some fellow Gabriel fans on here.

My avatar is from Peter's front door in Box. It is the Real World lion. I have been to his studios a few times and was lucky to go on the Growing Up tour in 2003 and the Still Growing Up tour in 2004 with them.

Extraordinary artist and wonderful human being.

I like the words to Sign of the Gypsy Queen:

Lightning smokes on the hillrise
Brought the man with the warning light
Shouting loud "you had better fly"
While the darkness can help you hide
Trouble's comin' without control
No one's stayin' that's got a hope
Hurricane at the very least
In the words of the gypsy queen

Sign of the gypsy queen
Pack your things and leave
Word of a woman who knows
Take all your gold and you go

Get my saddle and tie it on
Western wind who is fast and strong
Jump on back, he's good and long
We'll resist till we reach the dawn
Running seems like the best offense
Staying just don't make any sense
No one could ever stop it now
Show the cards of the gypsy town

Sign of the gypsy queen
Pack your things and leave
Word of a woman who knows
Take all your gold and you go

Shadows movin' without a sound
From the hold of the sleepless town
Evil seems to be everywhere
Heed the spirit that brought despair
Trouble's comin' without control
No one's stayin' that's got a hope
Hurricane at the very least
In the words of the gypsy queen

Hell, I don't care who fudges here. A year or three on either side of the decade mark? I don't care. Its that 80's vibe that counts :)

Thank you Selkie for this thread.

For many years I thought the 70's absolutely ruled and the 80's were a major drop off.

I guess the timestamp matters not ... but by paying close attention to the release dates I find myself more appreciative of this decade.

Just saw the final Rush tour with my oldest boy recently ... (his favorite band and first concert so that was some serious fun for both of us).

This was my favorite.

pffft i just got totally frustrated trying to find a good video for this song, i'm giving up for now.

Does anyone know what song begins with the lines

"The night is black
Without a moon

The air is thick and still.

The vigilante's gather on
A lonely torch lit hill."

Post a video for it if you find one ...

and oh yeah, what 80's flashback is complete without JONBONJOVI aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh screams like a girl

Power trio's, nothin' like it sometimes. I've seen many bands over the years, I'm actually now a bigger fan of unknown's, and was a part of the local musician scene in Ottawa for a while in the late 80's early 90's. None of us quit our day jobs, though it was a serious hobby to us all, and the thing about unknown bands is they don't have a name, except the one they get locally, and there's only one way to do that: be good. And try harder: they do. And of course you'll only see them live, which unto itself makes what they do a little harder, you certainly can't multi-track your lead vocals live. Some of the bands that I will never forget few have ever heard of. Maggie Pierce and EJ were one of those. 2 guys and a girl. Guitar bass drums. They did 3 sets, and they traded places on the instruments for each set. Each of them took a turn at the guitar the bass and the drums. This made each set distinctly different. It was awesome. They all sang too, and all their material was original.

I wished our band was like that sometimes, we had 7 members at one point, and then the flutist left, moved to another city for work, and we had a Hammond B-3 with a Leslie too omfg was that thing ever heavy, and we even carried it up a rickety fire escape staircase one night to get it onto the stage at Barrymores.

Ironically do you want to know what was the crux of why we broke up? We recorded 2 albums of original material (cassette tape first one, cd second one) and it was that half the band had this stoopid puritan notion that we NOT multi-track in the studio, (which cost us a few bucks each just to get in there) because it wasn't the "truth" about what we sound like live gaaaaaaaa. "the Grateful Dead never did that" pfffffft yeah, well the Grateful Dead had a possible population base of 300 million people!!! We're in figgin Canada, and we got 30, and WE CAN'T DO LIVE OUTDOOR SHOWS YEAR ROUND IT SNOWS HALF THE FRIGGIN YEAR!!!

Anyway, here's another Canadian power trio:

Times have changed though, and so has the gear. THIS is awesome. Some guy in Hamilton Ontario

I can find songs from the eighty's that they did and will post that here. Thanks,

Good scooping there Calz, that's like one of the most important yet most under proliferated scenes from that movie. Everybody always goes for the Neo and Morpheus scenes.

This guy was a product of the 80's as well that we all were aware of. I actually like him and his material, this song I think was great even while I am a fan of MJ, and the movie UHF was a classic imho

Did not know that, sorry for the loss up there but maybe it works out. Lots of good musicians move all over. I do believe you still have a lot living in that great northern wilderness of beauty and yes we got some to move here. But just think these folks are so talented and Canada does get credits. I really like Neil Young and he is doing something in this topsy turvey world to spread the word. Bruce Cockburn has done and is doing his major part to awaken folks. Now haven't heard Bryan Adams since he was big in the 80's but really do like his songs. Thanks and keep on doing what you do.
