This is a great article on citric acid and how it is made when it is made artificially.

Darn, just yesterday bought enormous Vit C supplement and now will be researching whether benzoate/potassium is in them. Vack to natural, NO shortcuts ever again. Makes you sorta respect how mother nature ensures we don't have these toxins in, as manKind seeks to reverse that. Must we all be Dow chemical's human lab test dummies?
They aught to be jailed. No, seriously. They aught to be jailed just for the intent.
Back to Sam's club to get a refund of 17.94 to prevent paying to voluntarily kill my body, huh?

I think what you have is ascorbic acid, Lifebringer.
PS: I just went and checked my own box of Vit. C (early winter prepping) to check whether any mention was made of it being GMO. There is an EU-legislation (will dig it up later) that requires all genetically modified food (assuming pills fall under that too) to have a GMO-label.
No label on my box. So, until then, it's the official story:
Biosynthesis
Main article: Vitamin C
Ascorbic acid is found in plants and animals where it is produced from glucose.[22] Animals must either produce it or digest it, otherwise a lack of vitamin C may cause scurvy, which may eventually lead to death. Reptiles and older orders of birds make ascorbic acid in their kidneys. Recent orders of birds and most mammals make ascorbic acid in their liver where the enzyme L-gulonolactone oxidase is required to convert glucose to ascorbic acid.[22] Humans, other higher primates, guinea pigs and most bats require dietary L-gulonolactone oxidase because the enzyme catalysing the last step in the biosynthesis is highly mutated and non-functional, therefore, unable to make ascorbic acid. Synthesis and signalling properties are still under investigation.[23]

Just checked my Emergen-C packet.
Other ingredients: citric acid, maltodextrin
Yikes! How could I have missed maltodextrin?
Grrrrr.
Thanks, breal, for this valuable info.
Peace Love Joy & Harmony,
genevieve
