When someone is suffering and you find yourself at a loss to know how to help, put yourself unflinchingly in his or her place. Imagine as vividly as possible what you would be going through if you were suffering the same pain. Ask yourself: “How would I feel? How would I want my friends to treat me? What would I most want from them?”

When you exchange yourself for others in this way, you are directly transferring your cherishing from its usual object, yourself, to other beings. So exchanging yourself for others is a very powerful way of loosening the hold on you of the self-cherishing and the self-grasping of ego, and so of releasing the heart of your compassion

It's an intellectual way of having compassion. When the ego melts, there's no you and no I. Then, compassion is automatic. Look at little babies, when one cries, the other automatically tries. We are all connected but somehow lost our way through education and social conditioning.

Delfine, many fine traditions are corrupted by people. Religion and spirituality are victims but the essence of the two are very much real. Besides, people need to use their intuition and common sense rather than take on board whatever is given.

in my own humble opinion anyone who adheres to any religious dogma, regardless of religion, reaps what they sow;

all religious dogmas (regardless of faith) were written by power-hungry/seeking priests and they got exactly what they wanted: power, money and sexual favors; nothing is ever new on this planet since ancient times; as former US President Truman once stated: "the only thing that is ever new on this planet is the history you don't know"
