Before reading online forum posts today, I read an email from our local Rev. Jeff at the Unitarian Universalism Fellowship in Midland, MI. For those unfamiliar with my local area, it is the corporate headquarters of Dow Chemical, and the town is not known as a great champion of gay rights, social justice, etc. but don't jump to any conclusions that Dow is the bad guy. Dow Chemical has more sophisticated ways of presenting their corporate mission and agenda than what was done here. Dow does many wonderful things for Midland and surrounding communities.
For the third time, unknown people have destroyed the Unitarian flag, the Rainbow flag and the U.S. Flag mounted in the front lawn of the congregation. I suspect that all the confusion we face today, has created cognitive dissonance among some fearful local people. Those of us belonging to this online forum, Project Avalon, have suspected this was coming.
Next I started reading today's forum posts some of which have been lingering for months and also years about such issues as 911 and JFK's murder. Some folks seem so anxious to find a source of leadership that they are clinging to some outrageous new "theories" that seem to be created to confuse people or to fling the authors into internet fame.
I hope that we can remember that we know better and have been preparing for years. This seems to be a last ditch wake up call and that many people will not able to handle this as an opportunity to grow spiritually. We need to center ourselves and not engage in what can become very ugly as more people become fearful.
I feel that Simon Parkes, a well know member of PA, has set a fine example when he did not engage in an awkward and naive attack on him. He stayed on target: to keep presenting thought provoking information.
We must remember that some people are not ready for a heavy duty transition and others of a psychopathic orientation find it fun to create chaos.
We joined a forum in pursuit of spiritual growth and we must stay centered in that purpose. Squabbling over an ego driven need to alway be right at the expense of another member being wrong is not our purpose.
So lets recommit to our purpose of spiritual growth. Here's is Gandhi's seven sins which I find helpful whenever I wonder if I am coming from an ego driven subtext of my own fear or anger.
Gandhi's Seven Sins:
Wealth without work; Pleasure without conscience; Knowledge without character; Commerce without morality; Science without humanity; Worship without sacrifice; Politics without principle
Other helpful tips for keeping centered would be appreciated. Thanks,
