Snowden says off planet communications may be encrypted

When Tyson asked Snowden if a highly intelligent alien civilization might be communicating with encrypted messages, Snowden began by saying that most advanced societies realize they need to encrypt their communications, and that this could be the reason why we've never heard from other civilizations.

I'd be very surprised if communications of this sort were not encrypted - it would kind of be expected. Ours are, and it's not as if humans are all trustworthy. If we have heard from other civilizations - and I believe we have - the general public would never be informed.

What I don't understand is why advanced civilisations would be communicating with technology we could understand (as we're not very advanced), so even if the communication wasn't encrypted, we wouldn't be able to understand it anyway.

Also - our encryption is based around our understanding of mathematics - and here again I'd expect an advanced civilication to have advanced concepts of mathematics. If you look at the frontier of our known science where you have quantum computing - one of the issues with quantum computing (apart from things being in more than one state at the same time) is that it could theoretically render all current encryption useless.

Then you've the dimension of time - current encryption algorithms are based on the amount of time required to work through all possibilities to get to and answer - but if you can manipulate time, you don't need to wait 100 years for the result, you can get it immediately ... which again renders our current encryption useless.

What the statement from snowden should actually say is that off planet commuications are likely sent in a form that only the intended recipient can understand ... but I guess that headline doesn't make for such a good story.

If another such device was built at the other end of the universe, the two electrons could interact by virtue of quantum exclusion, and one could deflect the other instantaneously.

This mode of communication would be inherently secure due to the infinite energy levels available, so would be hard to intercept. We keep projecting human modes of thought onto entities that have been technological for millions of years. Why bother?

I think this is very interesting. Understanding non-local communication would be a great step to take in this arena.

What I find most strange is to find these two very different individuals talking publicly, and to be talking about aliens. One, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, a corporatist insider, involved in the Space Program cover-up, big time defender of GMO. He is probably on the public relations staff for MJ12/"The Secret Space Program", either unwittingly or fully involved in their dark secrets.

The other, Snowden, the total outsider, whistle-blower, most wanted by the U.S. government. Privy to so many NSA documents that have yet to be released to the public, he has pretty much avoided the alien topic, making one wonder if info about E.T.s was in the data dump he stole. He has been mum on the topic until now. I don't see this as a story about aliens and encryption, I see that it is letting us know that Snowden and many in the NSA have the scoop on what is up in the extra terrestrial world and how it is interacting with planet Earth.

I don't disagree. Both of these characters are suspect in their motives and the agenda this conversation serves is most likely manifold.

This seems like another case of these guys--especially snowden--saying things that we either already knew, or should have thought of.
