Interesting. The title of the article,
"NASA to Announce Mars Mystery Solved"
uses the word "mystery", yet the blurb, such as it is, refers to "a major science finding". Is some publicist trying to get us all excited with the 'mystery' word, only to have the scientists at the press briefing tell us something very minor and inconsequential, as in,"The surface is a lot bumpier than we ever thought it would be!".
Now, if they were to tell us that they had found an underground base, even an abandoned one - naw, even the remains of a single building! then they'd be giving us something useful.
I ain't expecting much from these guys & gals. :ohwell:

What could they possibly tell us that the Alternative folks have not already done? So far we have boulders that are actually animals with teeth all the way down to their gut which eat people, military and civilian installations all over the place, underground and above ground, attempts to grow vegetation on the surface, reptilian and insect intelligent life, stargate transport to and from Mars which takes minutes, heavy duty space ships for transport of huge machinery, space TRAINS for transport of supplies (read this in a supermarket rag many years ago and kept the clipping). USA bases on the moon, back, front and sides, NAZI settlements on moon and MARS, USA and Russia in on the deal from day one? Intergalactic space fleet with slaves kidnapped from Earth working in mines and factories. These poor folks have been hoodwinked and mind controlled with lies. Huge space station in the rings of Saturn where Alien and Humans mingle to carry on trade, etc. What else is there????? We need to know WHAT you have been buying with your CREATIVE ACCOUNTING while we starve down here.

Has NASA discovered an ocean on Mars? Space agency poised to announce 'major
science finding' from the Red Planet
NASA called a press conference for Monday entitled 'Mars mystery solved'
Space agency has pledged to unveil a 'major science finding' at the event
Many think scientists are due to announce the discovery of flowing water
If that is the case, then the discovery would be the first of its kind
Flowing water also raises the prospect of discovering alien life on Mars

There is growing speculation that NASA may be about to announce it has
discovered liquid water on Mars after the space agency called a press conference
for Monday entitled 'Mars mystery solved'.
At the center of the rumors is Lujendra Ojha, a grad student at Georgia Tech, who
has been announced as one of the speakers alongside two of NASA's most senior
scientists.Ojha is credited with 'accidentally' discovering the first major evidence
that moving water existed on Mars after studying images of the planet's surface
back in 2011 while at the University of Arizona.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/09/26/23/2CCDD45200000578-3250431-image-a-1_1443307141612.jpg
NASA promised to solve one of Mars' mysteries at a press conference on Monday
with speaker Lujendra Ojha, a post-grad student who 'accidentally' discovered
evidence of flowing water on the planet in 2011 (pictured)
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/09/26/23/2CCDFCC300000578-3250431-image-a-2_1443307145275.jpg
By observing pictures of gullies on Mars over time, using a computer program to
filer out defects such as shadows, Ojha observed dark 'fingers' spreading across the
planet's surface
Alongside Alfred McEwen, who is also tabled to speak at the NASA press
conference, Ojha decided to study images of gullies on Mars's surface taken by a
fellow researcher, Colin Dundas. For his study, Ojha edited the images to remove
blemishes such as shadows and light interference, only to discover dark finger-like
markings that moved through the gullies over time. Not only did the markings
appear to move, they did so in a pattern that would be consistent with flowing
water.Ojha branded the discovery a 'lucky accident', saying he had no idea what
the shapes were at first, and adding that they had not even occurred in the gullies
he had been planning to study.None the less, once the potential significance of the
shapes was realized, he committed to 'years of research' in trying to prove that the
markings were actually created by flowing water.
Ojha then moved on the Georgia Tech where he continued to study the gullies.
Another Georgia Tech grad student, Mary Beth Wilhelm, is also tabled to speak
alongside Ojha, and is likely to have been working with him at the University.
Since Ojha's discovery, observations of similar sites on Mars have revealed that the
finger-like patterns seem to emerge in warmer seasons, and die away during cooler
seasons. This could potentially mean that there is flowing water, and even an ocean,
under the surface of the Red Planet, that rises to ground level during warmer weather.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/09/26/23/2CCDFCBE00000578-3250431-image-a-5_1443307502881.jpg
These fingers not only spread, they moved in patterns usually associated with the
flow of water, leading scientists to theorize that there might be liquid water under
the surface of Mars
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/09/26/23/01DA80C6000004B0-3250431-image-a-4_1443307161033.jpg
While we have known water existed on Mars for decades, after the discovery of its
ice caps (pictured), if concrete evidence has been found of liquid water on the Red
Planet, it would be the first discovery of its kind
5s9lKeZ8tmw
If scientists have found definitive evidence of liquid water on Mars then the
implications could be huge, as evidence of flowing water is still the best indication
researchers have that life may once have existed, or may yet come into existence,
on an alien world.
Evidence of the presence of water on Mars is nothing new. Polar ice caps were
discovered on the planet nearly four decades ago, and erosion patterns on the
surface suggest that rivers and oceans may have existed there in its early years.
However, with low gravity and a thin atmosphere, it is thought that this water
largely evaporated out into space, instead of falling back down, as it would have
done on Earth.
Concrete evidence of liquid water on another planet would be the first discovery of
its kind. While scientists strongly suspect that liquid water could exist on moons
such as Ceres and Europa, this hypothesis has not yet been proven.
Scheduled to speak on Monday alongside Ojha, McEwen and Williams is Jim Green,
director of planetary science at NASA HQ and Michael Meyer, lead scientist for the
Mars Exploration Program. The conference, which has promised 'a major science
finding from the agency’s ongoing exploration of Mars' will take place at 9am
Eastern Time on Monday

To me, 'mystery' implies an observation which has already been made, but which requires an explanation. It's different from a 'question', like 'is there life on mars'. That's why I thought perhaps the announcement may be related to atmospheric methane which is a prior observation. But, it's possible this nuance of language is lost on the author or NASA's release. A discovery or microbial life or a fossil of some kind would be amazing. Liquid water would be interesting, especially if it implies an underground heat source, but there have been a lot of water related discoveries on Mars already and if this hype turns out to be just a minor iteration on that, it would be disappointing.

Martian salt streaks 'painted by liquid water'

Dark streaks: Recurring slope lineae can be hundreds of metres long
Scientists think they can now tie dark streaks seen on the surface of Mars to
periodic flows of liquid water. Data from a Nasa satellite shows the features, which
appear on slopes, to be associated with salt deposits.Crucially, such salts could
alter the freezing and vaporisation points of water in Mars's sparse air, keeping it in
a fluid state long enough to move. Lujendra Ojha and colleagues report the findings
in the journal Nature Geoscience.
There are implications for the existence of life on the planet today, because any
liquid water raises the possibility that microbes could also be present. And for
future astronauts on Mars, the identification of water supplies near the surface
would make it easier for them to "live off the land".
Researchers have long wondered whether liquid water might occasionally flow
across the surface today.
Secret source
It is not a simple proposition, because the temperatures are usually well below zero
Celsius and the atmospheric pressure is so low that any liquid H20 will rapidly boil.
But the observation over the past 15 years of gullies and surface streaks that
appear to change with the seasons has heightened the speculation.

The images on this page are perspective views generated by a computer from MRO data
Dr Ojha has now presented new data from the US space agency's Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter that seems to solve the conundrum.MRO has an instrument
called Crism that can determine the chemistry of surface materials. It has looked at
four locations where dark streaks are seen to come and go during Martian summer
months.
Crism finds these "recurring slope lineae" (RSL) to be covered with salts.
They are salts - magnesium perchlorate, chlorate and chloride - that can drop the
freezing point of water by 80 degrees and its vaporisation rate by a factor of 10.
The combination allows briney water to stay stable long enough to trickle down
hillsides and crater walls. Quite where the water is coming from to make the
streaks is still unclear, however. The locations studied by MRO are equatorial, and
any stored water in this region of Mars, perhaps in the form of ice, is thought to
exist only at great depth. One possibility is that the salts actually pull the water out
of the atmosphere. But again, it is not known whether there is a sufficient supply in
the air to facilitate this.
Recurring slope lineaeImage copyright NASA/JPL/UA
http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/C470/production/_85788205_perspective_12-1024x513.jpg
Any mission to such locations would have to guarantee no Earthly contamination
Another theory is that local aquifers are breaking up to the surface, but this does
not really fit with streaks that appear from the tops of peaks. It is conceivable that
streaks are being formed from different sources in different parts of Mars.
Contamination question
Dr Joe Michalski is a Mars researcher at the Natural History Museum in London. He
called the announcement an exciting development, especially because of its
implications for the potential of microbes existing on the planet today.
"We know from the study of extremophiles on Earth that life can not only survive,
but thrive in conditions that are hyper-arid, very saline or otherwise 'extreme' in
comparison to what is habitable to a human. In fact, on Earth, wherever we find
water, we find life. That is why the discovery of water on Mars over the last 20
years is so exciting."
An interesting consequence of the findings is that space agencies will now have
some extra thinking to do about where they send future landers and rovers.
Current internationally-agreed rules state that missions should be wary of going to
places on Mars where there is likely to be liquid water.
A UK space agency expert on Mars landing sites, Dr Peter Grindrod, told BBC
News: "Planetary protection states that we can't go anywhere there is liquid water
because we can't sterilise our spacecraft well enough to guarantee we won't
contaminate these locations. So if an RSL is found within the landing zone of a
probe, then you can't land there. That would be kind of ironic for Europe's
forthcoming ExoMars rover because it's designed to look for life."

New findings from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provide the
strongest evidence yet that liquid water flows intermittently on present-day Mars.
Using an imaging spectrometer on MRO, researchers detected signatures of
hydrated minerals on slopes where mysterious streaks are seen on the Red Planet.
These darkish streaks appear to ebb and flow over time. They darken and appear to
flow down steep slopes during warm seasons, and then fade in cooler seasons.
They appear in several locations on Mars when temperatures are above minus 10
degrees Fahrenheit (minus 23 Celsius), and disappear at colder times.
“Our quest on Mars has been to ‘follow the water,’ in our search for life in the
universe, and now we have convincing science that validates what we’ve long
suspected,” said John Grunsfeld, astronaut and associate administrator of NASA’s
Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “This is a significant development, as it
appears to confirm that water -- albeit briny -- is flowing today on the surface of Mars.”

It about made me ill to watch these scientists reactions in this video. So exciting, huh?
Fifteen years ago the Alternative Media made the announcement of the evidence of present day liquid water on Mars, and ironically this evidence was discovered from NASA's own images.
ENTERPRISE MISSION INVESTIGATORS CONFIRM
EXISTENCE OF PRESENT DAY WATER ON MARS
Published on Jul 19, 2000
New research by investigators for the Enterprise Mission (www.enterprisemission.com), a private, not-for-profit space science research organization, has revealed strong evidence of present day liquid water on Mars in recent Mars Global surveyor images. Coming on the heels of the June 22nd, 2000 NASA press conference in which Malin Space Science Systems investigators Michael Malin and Kenneth Edgett asserted the possibility that Mars may have had liquid water in the geologically recent past, this new photographic evidence confirms that liquid water is almost certainly existent on Mars today.
This new finding, announced by Enterprise Mission principal investigator Richard C. Hoagland on the July 18th/19th edition of the nationwide radio program "Coast to Coast AM with Mike Siegel," (www.coasttocoastam.com) goes far beyond what was presented by Malin and Edgett at their June 22nd press briefing.

From MOC narrow-angle image SP2-33806 (http://www.msss.com/moc_gallery/ab1_m04/images/SP233806.html)
Did anyone get so excited about that? Of course not.
But then again, NASA is doing exactly what they were originally chartered to do: To keep us all abreast of current Aerospace Technology and Science Discoveries. But of course there is a caveat written into their charter which takes priority, and that has to do with so-called "National Security".
So if you've ever wondered why there are so many government secrets in the world, or maybe the reason why the Industrial Military is at-least fifty years ahead of the mainstream population, maybe now you'll understand.
NASA will continue to trickle their 'Ground-Breaking Discoveries' as they've always done, but only when it becomes absolutely necessary and only when they are directed to do so.
Great Job NASA!

What a waste.
p.s. If you're really interested in the state of current technology and science discoveries I'd suggest you stick with the alternative media. I know that it can sometimes get to be very convoluted and confusing to the less-experienced, but remember that there are also a lot of people out there who are experienced and in-the-know.

My feeling is that the "water on Mars" story is prep for a bigger story coming further down the line, that of life on Mars or elsewhere.
@amor, that is a great list..
Your exactly right seah.Next it will be Microbial life is found in
the water and then will come the message or a more advanced
life form. I call this trickle down disclosure.

Yep, totally agree...baby steps.
Been water on Mars images for some time, here's a focus image on the rim going down at Duck Bay Victoria Crater....

This is a cool milestone, there is liquid, salty, water on mars. It's just that we already knew there was water, and we already knew there was salt, so I thought that perhaps we were in for a different announcement. Not complaining, but I see this as an iterative step in our understanding of mars.
A concentrated magnesium perchlorate environment would be a nasty environment for bacteria to live, living in this water would be kind of like living in bleach. As the water dries, the precipitated salt would possibly also suck out the water of any life forms that might be there. However, many lifeforms have evolved to live in harsh environments as we all know, and bacterial bio-films in particular can be extremely effective in blocking toxins (although I'm not sure if they can typically withstand oxidising agents like perchlorate). So, can't rule out something living in this water. As a side note, it also makes you wonder how you could get fresh water on a planet that doesn't have rain, since this is the process that separates water from salt on earth.

It is good that they found water instead of oil.

Is there life on Mars?
By Pallab Ghosh
Science correspondent, BBC News
2 October 2015.................From the section Science & Environment
For more than a century, people have speculated about whether there is life on
Mars. Within five years we may have an answer. In the late 19th Century, the
American astronomer Percival Lowell thought he saw canals on the surface of Mars.
He suggested that this was evidence that our near planetary neighbour might not
only harbour life, but could possibly be home to an advanced civilisation.
This fired the public's imagination - prompting HG Wells's novel, The War of the
Worlds, several comics and numerous Hollywood science fiction films depicting Martian invasions.

Scientists once thought they saw a network of canals, raising the prospect of an
advanced Martian civilisation
What did the first missions find?
There was a mixture of disappointment and some relief when the existence of
canals was finally disproved by orbiting spacecraft sent to the Red Planet in the
1960s and 70s. Instead, they showed a cold desolate world. Even so, people
watched in awe as Nasa's Viking landers sent back the first pictures from the
surface of this eerily beautiful place. And there was eager anticipation for the
results of Viking 1's tests on soil samples. One of them indicated what was
interpreted as a signature for life - but was soon discounted as a bogus result.
And so for the best part of 20 years, Mars was seen as a dry dusty planet devoid of life.

One of the first views from the Martian surface: desolate yet eerily beautiful
When might life have emerged on Mars?
A series of missions in the late 90s and early 2000s began to send back data that
suggested Mars was not always the moribund world we see today. There were also
indications that Mars might have ice under the surface in some places and may
once have had a magnetic field. Subsequent missions gradually built up a picture of
a planet that was once not unlike our own 3.8 billion years ago. The data gathered
suggested that the Red Planet might once have had a thicker atmosphere as well as
lakes and oceans. These are the conditions that could have enabled life to emerge -
just as it did on Earth at about the same time.
Martian Streaks

The strongest evidence yet that water still flows on the Martian surface. But then
something catastrophic happened: Mars lost its magnetic field and with it most of
its water and atmosphere.
Is it likely there is still life on Mars?
The prospect of it still being there is slim but not impossible.
For there to be life, there needs to be liquid water. Evidence for that has been
growing and earlier this week Nasa seemed to have the the strongest evidence yet
that some is still there - albeit in small amounts.Fifteen years ago, Nasa discovered
gullies inside craters and on slopes. It looked like they might have been caused by
running water. But the temperatures are below freezing so many dismissed the
idea.Scientists then noticed that these features increased and decreased over a
period of a few months, so whatever was causing the gullies was happening now.
The latest study reported earlier this week has found evidence of different kinds of
salts in dark streaks on the slopes of peaks and crater walls. That's important
because salt can melt ice - enabling it to flow. The discovery confirms that the Red
Planet is still geologically active and, tantalisingly, it increases the possibility that it
may currently harbour simple living organisms. Current life on Mars is a remote
possibility because Mars is harsh, dry and bombarded with radiation, but it is a
prospect that will whet the appetite of those planning future missions to a world
that becomes more intriguing with each new set of results. Prof Andrew Coates,
who is deputy director of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at University
College London, says: "It was a good time for life on Mars to have developed 3.8
billion years ago, which was about the time that life was starting on Earth. But then
conditions changed which could have killed it off.
"But life is tenacious and once it has a foothold it is able to survive extreme conditions."

The European Space Agency's new Mars Rover, ExoMars. Could it finally find evidence for life?
The race to find life
Nasa, Europe and Russia all have missions planned for the next few years to
discover whether there was once life on Mars and whether it still exists. We may
have the answer within five years. The missions will follow up on a sensational result
that came in 2004 from an orbiting European Space Agency spacecraft, Mars
Express. This was the detection of the gas methane. It was a surprise because
there are limited ways it could be produced: by volcanoes and associated geological
activity or by living organisms. What's more, methane is a short-lived gas in the
atmosphere - it is broken down by sunlight. So whatever produced the methane
must have done so relatively near in time.
The implications of the discovery were so profound that some in the scientific
community thought that the instruments on the spacecraft were faulty.Even though
methane has been detected again by Nasa's Curiosity rover last year, some remain
unconvinced. In 2020, Nasa will send another rover to the Martian surface which
will seek signs of ancient biology. The European and Russian space agencies plan a
pair of missions called Exomars to resolve the issue. Next year, they will launch an
orbiting spacecraft that will try to confirm the presence of methane.
If life does exist on Mars, it is most likely to be below the surface. That is why two
years later the Russians and Europeans will send the Exomars rover to to drill two
metres into the planet. Just as the Viking lander did nearly 40 years ago, the
Exomars rover will take a soil sample and test it for signs of life.Dr Matthew Balme
of the Open University believes that this will be one of the most important
experiments carried out in human history.
"If we find life on Mars and it can be shown to be of a different origin to that on
Earth, then that essentially means that the Universe is teeming with life. It seems
almost impossible that life could spring up by chance on two adjacent planets if life
was rare."
