This just arrived in my email from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (http://www.eff.org) (EFF).

Interesting to see how this would work with all of the Federal and Corporate programs already in place capturing everything - data, internet, email, etc. Were privacy advocates just tossed a bone or could this actually be meaningful?


Breaking news! After months of intense pressure from EFF, fellow public interest groups, media organizations, privacy advocates, tech companies, and thousands of members of the public, Gov. Jerry Brown has signed the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act! The new law protects Californians by requiring a warrant for digital records, including emails and texts, as well as a user's geographical location. These essential protections apply to your devices and also to the online services that store your data.

Celebrate this win and support the fight for digital privacy with a donation to EFF!

EFF, working with the ACLU and the California Newspaper Publishers Association, sponsored the bill from the very beginning, recognizing that the right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure is inherently tied to freedom of speech.

‘A new law signed by California Governor Jerry Brown enacts sweeping digital privacy
protections, such as imposing a warrant requirement for police to access nearly any
type of digital data produced by or contained within a device or service.

Governor Brown had rejected several similar proposals in past years, but on Thursday
he signed the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act. Under the law, the
government is forbidden from “accessing electronic device information by means of
physical interaction or electronic communication with the device.”

The American Civil Liberties Union described the passage of the law as a landmark win.’

“Governor Brown just signed a law that says ‘no’ to warrantless government snooping
in our digital information. This is a landmark win for digital privacy and all Californians,”
said Nicole Ozer, Technology & Civil Liberties Policy Director at the ACLU of California,
in a statement. “We hope this is a model for the rest of the nation in protecting our
digital privacy rights.”

Brown announced Tuesday that he has signed AB1116. The bill blocks a television’s recording device unless consumers are prominently informed during initial setup that the feature could record conversations.

It also forbids TV manufacturers and related third parties from using or selling stored conversations for advertising purposes.

The bill was spearheaded by state Assemblyman Mike Gatto, a Democrat from Glendale. He worried that conversations could be captured and transmitted.

Privacy experts say the changes, while important, may not go far enough to protect consumers.

They say the information collected could still be used to make psychological or cultural assessments of people for insurance or customer relations companies.

I still have a dumb flip phone. It doesn't need much charging. You can get a hold of me mostly anytime because it doesn't die like many smart phones do these days.. I use it for what a phone is needed for emergencys etc. Nothing else. And I don't walk around like a zombie looking at this idiot box all day. I look at the world instead of my phone. This includes people, trees, clouds, birds, children laughing, people smiling, etc. This is the smart phone I like, my idiot phone. :bigsmile:

monitor their behavior and location.
