This seems a bet skewed. The move is to internet eCommerce. Video mentions Loehmann's closing all its clothing stores, but they moved to the internet. Anyway do we care so much for an Orange Julius, or Spencer's terrible joke gifts, or Caps just Caps?

Shopping online? Less social need for malls since Facebook is like hanging out with friends, right? Lol idk. I haven't been to a mall in years. I don't shop online, and I don't go on Facebook or have many friends... :D
Man I really feel sad for the poor malls. ;)

I saw the above site back in 2006, when I saw that major anchor stores and The Gap were closing, and the Dollar stores started moving in.
Apparently when a developer buys land to build a Mall they already know in advance what they can get for a square foot of retail space five years after opening, or fifteen years, and even how much for the "grey" land, ie cement foundations after the walls have been torn down 25 years later. 25 years is the life expectancy of an average mall.

Local shops, stores vanishing from the streets is a great part of a PTW control system!
I've noticed the little local food stores leaving over the years, being replaced by supper-markets, the super markets just happen to be on the big major roads.
So? well in the times of lock down, martial law, they have all food held in controllable places.
And think if they did manage to switch off the NET or in a country wide power outage where will we be?
The up and coming generations might not know of any other way to buy the essentials for living/health!

most of these stores aren't "local", they are big corporate chains (with local employees).

Greetings
Something tells me these malls will be where the homeless migrate to... or where Homeland Security will round people up and 'store' them...(forgive the pun!)...
anyway, thanks for the post...it is eye opening !!!

Ahh, I don't know much about the UK except this scary quote: "where the UK goes, the world follows".... I think that used to be the case, clearly not anymore as hegemony all over the globe breaks down.
However we do have a preponderance for "small business" failure in the US as well since corporations can offer a price point on goods that is unbeatable to the common consumer who cares less WHO sells them WHAT as long as it's CHEAP.

Everyone Is Asking: "If Chinese Consumption Is Rising, Why Are Its Malls Empty?" - Here Is The Answer
10/26/2015

The underground mall is located in one of the most shopping-mad cities in China, and yet it is run down and starved of customers."
"Sometimes I cannot sell even one dress in a day," said dress shop owner Ms Xu, who rents a space in Di Mei.
Rising vacancy rates and plummeting rents are increasingly common in Chinese malls and department stores, despite official data showing a sharp rebound in retail sales that helped the world's second-largest economy beat expectations in the third quarter
One possible answer to this seeming conundrum is a well-known one: the transition to online shopping which however does not explain all the recent bearish commentary from China's premier online vendor Ali Baba, which recently tumbled below its IPO price after announcing the slowest revenue growth in three years.
In fact, the only question after reading the above should be: "how long before China's consumption dysfunction leads to empty malls in the middle of the United States itself?"
